There is a new D period activity called SDI, which stands for Student Design Institute. It is for a group of 7th graders who meet to learn about future design. They meet in either the computer room or the art room. The class is taught by Mrs. Tesoniero, Mrs. Malone-Smith and Mrs. Astion. The topic is urban farming and creating a solution for cities of the future to find a way to feed their citizens. The first class, the students did a “quickfire” chal- lenge and had to come up with a piece of 3D art made by a team, with only certain materials. The sculp- tures were designed to incorporate many specific fea- tures. Other classes have included learning how to use 3DTin, a program to design elements to print in the new 3D printer. The main concepts of SDI are learning about urban farming and future technology. Hannah Martsen says “it’s fun!” Molly Flynn said it’s cool to learn about all this, especially because urban farming is good for the environment.” Sebastien Franck agreed, and added that the technology is useful to know about for the future. Winter reports that the schedule is a bit confusing sometimes. Others say they miss D period study hall, which some of them want to get their homework done. Students will come up with their own view of an urban farm and print a part of it on the 3D printer later on this spring. Green Hill Gazette 3D Printing ready to take off! For many weeks now, a small group of dedicated fifth grade writers have been work-ing on a Writer’s ToolBox Project.

The Writer’s ToolBox is a kit that lets you combine interesting and unusual prompts, characters, and obstacles in countless ways that seem more like a game than an actu-al assignment. (Parts of the stories are included on pages later in this paper)

For example: Here is a prompt that students have been working on: The main charac-ter is Liz, she reviews books for a living, wants to be a rich poet, she takes up dance, and her obstacles are the lady in 3B, the lady at Stop and Shop, and somehow you

have to weave in include blue in-dex cards, a yellow bus, and the last straw in the story has to be the tear in her dress.

School (a haiku)

Ringing bells end class Lunch and recess, run around

Finally go home

The Future When flying cars reign

And talking is gone (Only instant messaging now)

When we live not on earth (But on Mars instead)

And books are just something In your head

That’s when the future has finally come That’s when it’s not the future anymore

Liz and Her Problems

(a work in progress, by Emma A.)

“Money does not grow on trees, you know Liz.”, my boss yells at me. “Now stop writing your silly poems and get back to work! I have a new book for you.” I pick up the thin chapter book, the rough cover spreading over all my paper cuts. After finishing the book and giving it a three star rating, I head out of Paige’s Book Store and start walking. My apartment is just another block, I remind myself. I grab my blue index cards and get ready to write down a quick poem...

The Lady in 3B (A beginning, by Paige L)

I work in Kenman’s Reviews Shop across the street from my

apartment in New York City. I liked being a book reviewer but everything has its ups and its downs. My boss is always like “ Elizabeth, you need to put your heart and soul into it. Blah bla blah blah blah blah”. My name is Elizabeth, but I hate it, so I have people call me Liz of course. Mr. Kenman (my boss) says that in his store my name is Elizabeth. My dream job is to be...

ELIZABETH THE SUCKER!!! By Emma S (a star …)

A dollar is not what I wanted. I got a dollar for my poem. I wrote it down on blue index card. I definitely

wasn’t aiming for that. I think of the last book I wrote a review of.  I had paid close a ention to it when I was

reading it. I shook my head, t ing to make my jumbled thoughts go away…..

Untitled, by Elana D The woman in 3B was mysterious, scary. She made me want to run when I saw her. By the way, I'm Elizabeth, Liz for short. I live in 3C, The woman in 3B is Ms. Rowling. If you ever saw her you would think shes a sweet old lady with a cute baby pink poodle. Then you learn that she was in an insane asylum, after that… you run. My ¨job¨ is a book re-viewer.. or so people think. I'm actually a spy for the government, But what I want to be is a rich poet. My job life is very confusing even for me.Now, lets get back to Ms.Rowling. One of the weirdest things about her is that she goes to Stop and Shop every day to buy blue index cards for her collection. Then one day after going to Stop and Shop Ms. Rowl-ing started to dance.

Life of Me by Olivia R

Life as a book reviewer is horrible. Well, yes I get to read like every book known to mankind, but it gets really boring really easily. My real life long dream is to be a poet. One of those poets that makes a lot of money. Like rich. Because I’m sure you probably don’t know that I’m pretty poor, I live in a small apartment on the corner of Maple Ave at the Blue Bird Inn. My room is 2B right under Mrs.Markison. The lady is a very peculiar women. She always goes to Stop & Shop every Wednesday, precisely at 10:00 am. She comes back with 3 packs of blue index cards.

Why blue? Why index cards? I have no idea. Anyway …...

Welcome to the age of holograms. The new HoloLens from Microsoft will lets us ex-perience the world like we never have before. In the future it is possible that this will re-place almost everything that we use today such as TV’s, projectors and even lights.

The Hololens is expected to release late 2015 for developers and mid 2016 for personal use. The Hololens will also impact the gaming world as it maps the room you are in and places objects accordingly.

This could means that you could play games such as Skyrim or Minecraft in your own room without a computer or console! The Hololens will truly change the world as we know

The brand new version of Windows is now up for download. Windows 10 is completely free for the next year while it is in its technical build. Windows 10 adds many new features to your computer such as Cortana, named after the character from Halo and is currently on Win-dows phones, but now she is on your computer. Cortana can let you do many things hands-free such as send emails, open apps and close apps. Windows 10 is also much like windows 7 as instead of an app screen you have a search screen just like windows 7. But it is also much like the design of 8 with the futuristic look. Windows 10 also includes a new web browser called Spartan. Spartan is currently in alpha so there are bugs to it but overall it is a decent web browser. Windows 10 is up for download check it out!

POETRY CLUB by Robin Lamb

Recently, if you’ve been walking around in the eighth grade hallway, you’ve probably no-

ticed some sheets of paper with words on them. No, these are not annoying adds for an event that, let’s face it; most of us probably won’t go to anyway. These slips of paper with words are POEMS! These poems chronicle all sorts of things, from immortality to societies scorn of any-thing different to even being a fan of something. Believe it or not we have a poetry club. A ra-ther small and quirky poetry club but a poetry club none the less. This group meets on Wednesdays in Mr. Heck’s room from 2:45-5:00, standard Project Connection time. They eat snacks, discuss controversial topics or current issues in the world and then write poetry.

As the came towards the school come to the end of the first project connection session Poetry Club (which is what it is currently called as a name is yet to be determined) decided to put up copies of various poems new and old to cover most lockers in the eighth grade neighbor-hood. Some of these poems have been torn down as well as one picture of a Quokka, which was meant as a joke for the Poetry Club people but was accidentally printed with the poetry.

Among the more recently written poems were ones describing the idea of poetry club and what it is Poetry Club does. One of the poems describing the club anonymously posted on the wall read as follows:

“Is it Wednesday yet? The bell rings

We drop our things And rush to eighth grade ELA

Don’t be late! You don’t want to

Miss the bickering for today Once settled down

We dish out beautiful works of art We laugh, we talk ‘til the sun goes down

Then paste our work upon the walls Who knows if we’re seen Or heard outside of this

Literature enclosure But for now we have each other

StudentCouncilUpdateby Abby Z On April 10th, from 6:30 to 8:30, the Student Council hosted a fundraiser dance. The admission was $5 dollars per person. All the money made will go to Pennies for Patients. This year the Student Council hosted a dance to raise the money instead of using the usual donation boxes, because they said it’s an easier way to raise money, it’s quicker, and more efficient. Thank you to all students and teachers who helped the Student Council raise money for Leukemia!

French Projects by Abby Z

The pictures below are projects from Madame Elliot’s recent 6th grade class. The two big posters were a project when we had to make a monster and label the body parts in French. The three storyboards, or comics, are when we had to draw two characters meet-ing each other, and make what they’re saying in French. Hope you enjoy them!
