1.0 Introduction

The Green Building Initiative® (GBI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the design and

management of sustainable facilities. The Graphics Standards (this “Document”) shall be used as a

reference for marketing and communications materials. This Document shall ensure that the means

in which the Green Building Initiative programs and services are communicated are consistent for all

users. The consistent use of the Green Globes® and GBI marks is crucial to maintaining their value and

strength. Thank you for helping us in protecting their display.

1.1 Our Mission

The Green Building Initiative (GBI) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to

accelerate the adoption of building practices that result in energy-efficient, healthier

and environmentally sustainable buildings by promoting credible and practical

green building approaches for commercial construction.

1.2 Registered Trade Mark® and Abbreviations

REGISTERED TRADE MARK ® USAGE - The Registered Trade Mark ® is always to be used with Green

Globes and GBI logos.

When the words “Green Globes®” and “Green Buidling Initiative®” are being written, the ® should be

used in the first instance. Any additional written instances of either word within a document do not

require the ®. Please use the “superscript” version of the ® when used along side the name.

USE OF ABBREVIATIONS - The first written instance of the “Green Building Initiative” should always be

followed by the GBI acronym. For example: The Green Building Initiative® (GBI).

Any subsequent written instances can just use the GBI acronym.

The word Green Globes is never to be abbreviated under any circumstance.

The professional certifications for:

Green Globes ProfessionalTM, Green Globes AssessorTM and Guiding Principles Compliance ProfessionalTM

can be abbreviated to GGP, GGA and GPCP only when using the logo or on the second written instance

of the certification title. When they are being written out, the TM should be used in the first instance.

2.0 Official Logos

The official logos are below:

• GBI LOGO (white background)

• GBI LOGO - MONOTONE (colored background)

• GREEN GLOBES LOGO

The Green Globes logo is the primary brand identity and should have more visual emphasis, with the GBI logo having a secondary, support role.

The Green Globes logo should always appear on a white background.

• CO-BRANDED LOGO LOCKUP

This version of the logos can be used in special situations where both logos are required within a constrained space.(ie. sponsorship advertising, email signature, etc.)

• GREEN GLOBES

CERTIFICATION LOGOS

2.1 Logo Applications

BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF THE GREEN GLOBES AND GBI LOGOS IN APPLICATION.

A more dynamic “notched” version of the Green Globes logo (which can protrude from its white

background) can be used on various applications. A curved shape (derived from the Green Globes

logo) can also be used to frame photos or to house the Green Globes logo. Applications of the

monotone GBI logo can also be seen below.

>> “Notched” logo on a straight white background.

>> “Notched” logo on a curved white background. Monotone GBI logo (on blue).

2.2 Tagline Usage

The Green Globes specific tagline “A Smarter Alternative to LEED®” can be used in some applications

with the Green Globes logo. Both a horizontal and vertically stacked option are available. The

“Support Application” of the tagline can also be used on it’s own, but should still appear in close

visual connection to the Green Globes logo.

Additionally, an all upper-case “Hero Application” of the tagline can be used where the tagline

statement will be the key focal point. (example: the tradeshow banner)

2.3 Logo Clearspace

To ensure their integrity and visibility, the Green Globes and GBI logos should be kept clear of

competing text, images and graphics. Both logos must be surrounded on all sides by adequate

clearspace.

A special exception to this rule can be applied to the “Notched” version of the Green Globes logo,

where the logo is intended to overlap an image (as used in the Project Profiles).

The examples below outline the minimum clearspace needed for each logo.

2.4 Incorrect Logo Usage

In order to maintain consistency and brand integrity, there are only several acceptable versions of the

Green Globes logo. On this page are examples of unacceptable logo usage. These are examples only

and do not necessarily represent all of the unacceptable uses. The same rules apply to the GBI logo.

Consistent color usage across all touchpoints is vital to the integrity of our brand. Below are approved

color formula variations for print and digital formats. No other color specifications should be used

unless dictated by special circumstances.

4.0 Corporate Fonts

Typography plays an important role in defining our brand identity. Together with the logo and colors,

typography helps to establish the consistency of the identity on website, tradeshows, case studies,

publications, presentations, etc.

Gotham and Avenir are the official font families for Green Globes and GBI. These typefaces are to be

used by designers, inhouse designers, agencies, vendors and suppliers to create identity materials,

such as stationery, brochures, tradeshows, etc. That said, it is not necessary that all internal employees

have these fonts, as they are not required in corporate emails or Word documents.

GOTHAM - (in various weights) is used for headlines, subheads and body copy in various marketing

materials, tradeshow banners, project profiles, etc. (Gotham has been used in this document.)

Gotham Light / Gotham Roman / Gotham Medium / Gotham Black

AVENIR - (in various weights) has been used for GPC Certification logos, etc. It is not to be used for

any other applications.

7.0 Organizational Marks & Usage Rules

7.1 Usage of Hyphens

The below commonly used words within Green Globes Certification will always use a hyphen and never be

one word:

Always hyphenate:

• third-party

• self-evaluation

• post-construction

• cloud-based

• pre-design

No hyphen is ever used for:

• online

• onsite

• website

• ToolTips

• Prerequisites

• cloud computing

*Note. Login and Log In have two different meanings and should not be confused.

7.2 Usage of Capitalization

When used in a sentence or on their own - these words are not capitalized:

• client

• user

• assessor

• auditor

• assessment

• survey

• subscription

• third-party

• self-evaluation

• onsite

Unless you are using the word directly following Green Globes or GBI, making it a proper noun.

Examples:

• Green Globes Assessor

• Green Globes Auditor

• GBI Account

7.3 Organizational Terminology

ONLINE ACCESS

The “GBI Account” is the online account available through the GBI website that a client uses to access

their building projects, personnel certifications, and any other information restricted from the general

public. The GBI Account is a central portal from which the user can access other systems, such as Green

Globes and CourseSites.

Incorrect uses:

• Green Globes User Account

• Green Globes Account

• GBI User Account

GREEN GLOBES SURVEYS

We no longer have subscriptions, we have project registration.

ANALOGY: Green Globes Project Dashboard is the book title and the surveys are the chapters.

•When referring to the “book” (previously evaluation) that contains the series of NC survey’s - we now

refer to it as the “Dashboard”

Since the survey’s are named documents, they should always be italicized when written.

Correct usage:

•“It costs $1000 to register your Green Globes NC project.”

•“The Green Globes Project Dashboard contains the following three surveys: Pre-Design, Schematic

Design, and Post-Construction."

DESIGN CONSTRUCTION PHASES

When referring to design construction phases they are correctly written as:

pre-design and post-construction

All buildings and assets are referred to as “projects” to customers. Multiple buildings on a campus or for

the same company in multiple cities are called a “project portfolio” and each individual building is referred

to as XYZ project.

If you are using these words in reference to a document, then it becomes the title of a document and

should be capitalized and italicized.

Correct usage example:

“The Green Globes Project Dashboard contains the following three surveys: Pre-Design, Schematic Design,

and Post-Construction."
