Butte’s DanHarrington to lead parade

BY JOHN GRANT EMEIGHof The Montana Standard

Dan Harrington is usedto being at the forefront ofimportant times inMontanan.

He was there at theMontana ConstitutionalConvention in 1972. Heserved for decades in thestate Legislature. And,now, Harrington will bethe 2012 grand marshal forButte’s St. Patrick’s Dayparade at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“I was very happy aboutthat (being named grand

marshal). Ithink it’s agreathonor,”Harringtonsaid.

Harring-ton, 74, hasheld manyimportantpositions inhis lifetime. He represent-ed Butte-Silver Bow in theMontana Legislature for 33years, having served in thestate House ofRepresentatives from 1976to 2001, before serving inthe Senate.

His first big foray intopolitics happened when heserved as a delegate in the1972 MontanaConstitutionalConvention. Harrington

told The MontanaStandard recently that heis proud of the workaccomplished during thattime in the state’s history.

“We did a great job. It(the new Constitution)withstood time very welland was very progressivein moving the state for-ward,” Harrington said.

He noted that theMontana’s originalConstitution, which wasdrafted in 1889, had a gooddeal of “corporate control”over the state. This wasmainly to blame on thedeep-pocketed influenceof the Copper Kings, suchas the Anaconda Co.,Harrington said.

It was his decades ofservice to Montana andButte-Silver Bow that

moved the ButteCelebrations committee toelect him to lead this year’sSt. Patrick’s Day parade.

“I was told I hadworked hard for manyyears in the Legislatureand in Butte and that’swhy they selected me,”Harrington said.

Though he admits he’s alittle nervous about beinggrand marshal of theparade, Harrington won’tbe up there all alone. Heplans to have his wife of49 years, Pat, and his sixgrandchildren with himduring the parade.

“I’ve always enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day in Butte,”Harrington said. “So manyfamilies return to Butteand I always meet so manygreat people.”

HEADQUARTERS

BU-20304564

Butte Celebrations has designated the Mulcahy clan as theGreat Irish Family for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The Great Irish Family startedwhen Tity and Mae Mulcahy hadtheir first child, Marie, nearly 90years ago. Marie Mulcahy Cassidywill be with the family in the paradeon Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m..

Eleven others followed. Tity andMae reared their dozen children inDublin Gulch near the Steward andKelley mines. The family now num-bers over 250.

“We’re expecting about a hundredto come from all over, Spokane,Billings and Missoula,” said Colleen

Mulcahy Griffith. “Everyone is soexcited, especially the grand-children.”

Some of the Mulcahys will ride inthe Chamber of Commerce trolley“but a lot of us will walk behind thetrolley,” Griffith said. They’re plan-ning to decorate the trolley and adecorated truck which will follow theclan is the Mulcahys’ parade entry.

St. Patrick’s Day has always beenspecial for the family; many havebeen seen for years along the paraderoute wearing Irish sweaters with“Mulcahy” knitted into the design. Some of the Mulcahy men featurebeards and hair dyed green for their special day.

The patriarch, Tity, whose givenname was Thomas, for years ranMulcahy’s Bar on North Main justsouth of the Federal Building.

Judy Powers of Anaconda, afriend, says the family “has alwaysloved their Irish heritage andupbringing.”

Nine of Tity’s and Mae’s childrensurvive: Marty Mulcahy, RichieMulcahy, Mickey Mulcahy, BillyMulcahy, Eileen Tierney, Betty JoHouchin, Alice McMillan, ColleenGriffith and Marie Cassidy. CassRosich passed away in 2008;Maurice “Moe” in 2004, and Tom in1992.

Everybody may be alittle Irish on St. Patrick’sDay, but that’s no excuseto drive impaired thisweekend or any day of the week.

Beaverhead Countyand other area countieswill have extra patrols outto help make this a safe holiday for everyone.

Many people celebrateSt. Patrick’s Day by drinking alcohol, buteven if you’ve had only afew drinks and are justfeeling “buzzed,” don’tkid yourself becausebuzzed driving is drunk

driving, said BeaverheadCounty Sheriff JayHansen.

The legal blood alcohollimit is 0.08 in Montana, but drivers can be citedfor impaired driving atlower limits.

“Your safest move foravoiding arrest andavoiding a crash is to havea sober driver. Know howyou are getting homebefore you start to party,’’he said.

The extra patrols concentrate on keeping impaired driversoff the road, deterring

speeding and encouraging the use ofseat belts and childrestraints.

The additional patrols

are funded by theMontana Department ofTransportation SelectiveTraffic EnforcementPrograms grants.
