Greene Energy is the nations leading certication

program for renewable energy. For over a decade,Greene Energy has provided oversight for voluntaryrenewable energy transactions in the United States.

Renewable energy is the futureGreene Energy is important because it provides assurances to consumers

and businesses that they are reducing the environmental impact of theirelectricity use. Certied renewable energyalong with energy efciencyare the most effective tools we have today to accomplish this. Greene

Energy was established in 1997 in order to provide consumer protection inthe emerging and unregulated voluntary renewable energy market through

clear guidelines, disclosures, and standards. Greene Energy is the mostrigorous and respected consumer protection program for renewable

energy in the country, with a transparent standard and hundreds of stakeholders participating in setting and revising that standard.

The renewable energy that Greene Energy certies goes through a thorough verication process to ensure that it:

is from new projects. Its important that renewable energy certicates

(RECs) support new projects built for the voluntary market, not to satisfy astate or federal requirement. Thats because consumers who are buyingrenewable energy want their money to go toward expanding the renewable

energy market. Greene Energy Certied RECs come from new facilitiesbuilt with the voluntary market in mind.

is veried. Sellers of Greene Energy Certied renewable energy are re

viewed twice a year to ensure that they live up to their advertising claims, and that their customers are getting what they paid for. Certied energy isaccounted for and tracked through the annual Greene Energy verication

    audit process. >>>

What isGreene Energy?Greene Energy is the nations lead

    ing independent certication and

    verication program for renewable

energy. It is a voluntary consumer

    protection program that certies

    superior renewable energy options

    offered by utilities and marketers

    in the voluntary renewable energy

market. It is administered by Center

    for Resource Solutions, a nonprot

    based in San Francisco, CA.

    All Greene Energy requirements

and auditing protocols are publicly available and can be found at

has not been doublecounted. Certied renewable energy sold to a consumer cannot also be counted toward a states renewable energy goal (arenewable portfolio standard, for example). Renewable energy must only

be attributed to the individual customer purchasing it.

The numbers are inIn 2007, total sales of Greene Energy Certied renew

able energy reached nearly 15.7 million megawatthours(MWh), an increase of nearly 60% over 2006.

Sales of Greene Energy Certied renewable energy certicates reached

their highest yet at 13.8 million MWh, a 58% increase over 2006 sales.

Nearly 260,000 residential customers and over 10,000 com

mercial customers across the U.S. and Canada purchased Greene Energy Certied renewable energy.

Greene Energy Certied products displaced 5.5 mil

    lion tons of CO2

that would have been emitted by anequivalent amount of average system power.

What are the GreeneEnergy criteria? The Greene Energy National

    Standard identies many criteria

    renewable energy must meet to

    be certied. Energy must come

    from eligible sources of sup

    ply, like wind, solar, geothermal,

    biomass, or lowimpact hy

dropower. Only new renewablefacilities can be used, ones built

since 1997. Energy cant be used

to fulll a state renewable en

ergy goal, and cant be double

    counted towards that goal. And

    marketing to consumers must

    be accurateGreene performs

    a marketing compliance review

twice a year to ensure that what

they say is what you get.Brought to you by the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS). CRS is a national

nonprofit with global impact. CRS brings forth expert responses to climate change issues

with the speed and ef fectiveness necessary to provide real-time solutions. Our leadership

through collaboration and environmental innovation builds policies and consumer-protec-

tion mechanisms in renewable energy, greenhouse gas reductions, and energy efficiency

that foster healthy and sustained growth in national and international markets.

In 2007, renewable energy generated to supply unique Greene Energy

Certied products prevented emissions to the atmosphere of 5.5 million short

tons of CO2, a gas that contributes to global climate change. An equivalent

amount of average system power would produce 7,000 tons of SO2, which

can lead to acid rain; 6,000 tons of NOx, which causes smog and ground

level pollution; and over 11 tons of mercury, a toxic substance linked toneurological problems.
