La banda se creó en el año 1982, cuando Billie JoeArmstrong y Mike Dirnt con solo 10 años se hicieron amigos y ambos tenían un grupo en común .A finales de 1980 ambos llamaron al batería John Kiffmever y al bajo Sean Hughes para dar nacimiento a un grupo bajo el nombre de SweetChildren, en un principio Armstrong y Dirnt eran los guitarristas.Mas adelante cambiaron el nombre a Green Day.
