    GREEN CITY GRANT PROGRAM 3

Funding is available to cover up to half of the cost of each greening project. Grants start at $500 for residents and $1,000 for business and building owners, up to a maximum grant of $10,000 in matched funding.

We’re looking for greening projects that enhance the presentation of a property and:

    • Are located on or are visible from a street or other public place

    • Complement the character of the surrounding area

    • Contain plantings appropriate for a public space (for example, vegetation that is not spiky or of a height that blocks sightlines)

Preference will be given to projects that:

    • Are in locations with little to no greenery

    • Are creative or innovative

    • Will provide a significant amount of greenery once fully grown

    • Offer a particular benefit to the local community

What types of greening projects are eligible?

Grants can be used for both small and large scale projects that help make the city a greener, cooler and more attractive place to live and work. Joint proposals where residents, businesses or building owners work together on a single greening project are particularly encouraged.

Grants are available for projects such as:

    • Living walls

    • Green facades

    • Vertical gardens

    • Window boxes

    • Greenery that spills over balconies

    • Vines and climbers on verandahs or other structures

    • Upgrades to existing verge gardens

Planter boxes placed on the public footpath and not removed every day may be considered if they meet criteria set out in the fact sheet (adelaidecitycouncil.com/greencitygrants).

Planter box proposals by businesses with outdoor dining need to follow Council’s Outdoor Dining Guidelines.

If you have other greening ideas, please call us to discuss your proposal (see Further Information).

Please note that if you receive a Green City Grant you will be responsible for all ongoing care and maintenance of your completed project, including regular watering.

Green City Grants are not available for:

    • In-ground street trees

    • Projects that are not visible from the street

    • Indoor greenery (such as a green wall within a building foyer)

    • Projects that have already commenced or been completed

    • Staffing or operational costs

    • Development application, permit or other statutory fees

    • On-going running or maintenance costs

    • Properties owned or managed by Adelaide City Council or a State or Federal Government agency

Who is eligible to apply for a grant?

Green City Grants are available to all residents, businesses and building owners within the Adelaide CBD and North Adelaide.

    Can I green the footpath?

The footpath is for everyone to use so if your greening project will be located here you need to ensure there is enough space and it won’t obstruct pedestrians.

As a general rule, anything placed on the footpath must be set back a minimum of 600mm from the kerb line, and leave a minimum of two metres between the object and the building edge to allow for pedestrian movement.

There may be situations where a pedestrian zone of less than two metres is feasible. This will be assessed by Council officers on a case by case basis taking into account factors such as street type, traffic speed, pedestrian numbers and public transport waiting areas.

    When do applications close?

The Green City Grant Program opens on 20 February and closes on Tuesday 18 April 2017.

Adelaide City Council’s $200,000 Green City Grant Program encourages residents, businesses and property owners to create a pocket of greenery that adds to their street appeal and helps make the city’s streets and public spaces more attractive and enjoyable.
