What are Green Materials?
What is Greenwashing?
GREENWASHING
Greenwash-o-rama youtube.com
What Makes It Green?
1. Where did the material come from?
2. What are the byproducts of the process
used to manufacture or produce it?
3. How is the material transported from
the factory to the job site, and how will it
be installed?
4. How will the material be
maintained and/or operated?
5. How healthy are the materials to be
around?
6. What will happen to these materials
if and when they are discarded or
outdated? (Can they be recycled or
reused?)

Based on weight
Credit 2.2: Construction
Waste Management Divert 75% from Disposal
Credit 3.1: Materials Reuse
Use salvaged, refurbished or reused materials
such that the sum constitutes 5%, of the total
value of materials on the project.
Credit 3.2: 10% of total value of materials
Credit 4.1: Recycled Content
10% (post-consumer + ½ pre-consumer)
Credit 4.2: Recycled Content 20%
Recycled content…..
Post-consumer : material generated
by end users of a product, which can
no longer be used for its intended
purpose.
Pre-consumer : material diverted
from the waste stream during the
manufacturing process.
Metal Roofing
Recycled barnwood, cobblestones
and concrete rubble
Floors from reclaimed lumber
Credit 5.1: Regional Materials Use building materials and products that have
been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well
as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project
site for a minimum of 10% (based on cost) of
the total materials value.
Credit 5.2: Regional Materials
Minimum of 20% (based on cost) of the total
materials value.
Shot Earth
Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable
Materials Use rapidly renewable
building materials and
products for 2.5% of the
total value of all building
materials and products,
Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo Flooring
Cork Flooring
Resilient Flooring
Wool Carpeting
Credit 7: Certified Wood Use a minimum of 50% of
wood-based materials and
products, which are FSC
certified.
These include: structural
framing and general
dimensional framing,
flooring, sub-flooring,
wood doors and finishes.
Ecological Functions of a
Natural Forest Provides shelter and protection, and
maintains stability of air, soil and water.
Preserves the perfectly adapted genetic
material of plants and animals.
Buffers cyclones and tsunamis
Absorbs carbon dioxide
If large enough, will offer sanctuary to
indigenous mammals, birds and reptiles in
the event of fire or drought, cyclones or
tsunamis, especially if it is linked to wildlife
corridors.
What is FSC ?
INDEPENDENT – Not-for-profit organization
JUST – Balance in decision making between
economic, ecological and societal interests.
APPLICABLE WORLDWIDE- Criteria
implemented in tropical and temperate forests.
CREDIBLE – Chain of Custody (CoC) is
monitored from forest to end product.
Only system that specifies objective, verifiable
forest management and closely monitors if
these have been achieved.

Innovation in Design
Exemplary Performance Points
Project teams may earn an Innovation in
Design point for exemplary performance
when the requirements reach the next
incremental step.
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)
A life cycle assessment
is the investigation and valuation of the
environmental impacts of a given product or
service caused or necessitated by its
existence.
Life Cycle Assessment
Cradle to Grave –
LCA considers environmental
impacts related to:
Extraction or harvesting of raw materials
Refining and manufacturing processes
Transportation of those products
Eventual disposal or reuse
Look at the whole building
from a life-cycle perspective
Addressing the impacts of building
operation, including energy use, water
use, and maintenance impacts should
be a high priority.
Certification of Products
Green Specifications
Summary of Product Standards
for GreenSpec Products made from environmentally
attractive materials
Products that are green because of what isn’t there
Products that reduce environmental impacts during
construction, renovation, or demolition
Products that reduce environmental impacts of
building operation
Products that contribute to a safe, healthy indoor
environment:

Flyash
Flyash
Advantages of Fly Ash in
Concrete
Fly Ash is a pozzolan.
Fly Ash improves concrete
workability and lowers water demand.
Fly Ash has a lower heat of hydration.
Fly Ash generally reduces the
permeability and adsorption of
concrete.
Fly Ash is economical.
