How Do Green Building Designs Work?• Green Building Designs or

Green Building as it is called is basically building and operating a structure in a “ecological and resource efficient” manner.

• For example: Using less energy to operate the building.

• It involves using resources throughout the building and operating process.

• For example using ecology blocks to build the structure then using energy efficient light bulbs for light and finally using energy efficient techniques to run the building or structure.

• Factors to consider • Benefits and

consequences concerning the environment must be considered and planed out before building on a piece of land.

• For example: Is the building going to destroy or interfere with the natural environment.

• The construction must involve using resources that are environmentally friendly.

• Operations must involve energy efficient techniques.

Materials include: Recycled metal

• Materials Include:• Forest Lumber• Industrial Goods

that were recycled• Polyurethane• Wood fibers• Or Basically

anything that is recyclable

How Could This Energy Source be Used?• This energy

source can be used in the future to build buildings.

• It can be used to build most new homes, offices, or any other type of structure.

• Green Building could be used by anybody ranging from corporate all the way down to home owner and also schools.

• Green Building should be used by all people throughout the world and should be introduced as a main way to build future structures.

Page 8: Green Building

What are Some Examples of its Current Use?• Countries such as the

United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Israel to name a few all have incorporated some sort of action to encourage green building.

• For example: In the U.S., The United States Green Building Council promotes the idea of green building.

• In Canada, a program called the R-2000 provides building codes for environmentally friendly building techniques or green building.

• Green Building Examples

• Federal Triangle in Washington, DC

• A Region 3 Office in Philadelphia, Pa

• A Science and Technology Center

in Kansas City, Kansas

• A Region 8 office in Denver, Colorado

What are apparent environmental impacts associated with this?

• Positive• Reduced Air

pollution due to building design

• Reduce the amount of energy used

• Limit the amount of resources used

• Reduced environmental damage

• The waste generated will likely decrease with the green buildings.

• Negative• Destruction of land

when the construction of the building, land is first cleared and dug

• Increased pollution from trucks delivering the materials needed

• Reduced population of creatures living in construction area.

• Possible Noise Pollution

Page 11: Green Building

Are there hidden environmental and social costs?• There might be a few

hidden- environmental costs but there are more positive costs rather than negative hidden costs.

• Pollution from delivery trucks could be a hidden- environmental cost

• Relatively little hidden factors, more beneficial factors, Reduced water pollution, for example and lots of others reign over the hidden factors.

• Some hidden social costs would include the cost of building, and maintaining the new green building because it is more than a traditional structure and that is what people advocating green buildings are not really telling you, that it probably will cost you a lot more to build a green building.

• Also a possible social cost might fall into play if the building is not properly built or some part of the building fails due to building using environmentally friendly products. Not many building are using environmentally friendly products and could fail sooner that non-environmentally traditional products.

Page 12: Green Building

Is this technology widely accepted today? Why or Why not• This technology is not

really accepted, mostly due to the higher costs and different procedures need to operate a green building. It is slowly being introduced and viewed as a beneficial solution to building future offices, homes or some type of other building.

• The benefits are not shown immediately but are seen down the road in the future.

• This technology should be used more often because of the beneficial effects, and environmentally friendly products it features.

• Green building and other types of clean, renewable energy methods and resources should be looked at as a main energy source for the future.

Page 13: Green Building

Do the costs of this technology make it prohibitive for common use? Why or why not?• Depending upon the opinion

of the owners building the structure, it could be prohibitive or not prohibitive for common use.

• The owners of the building have to consider the cost-benefit ratio when determining to build a green building.

• We believe that the cost of the technology would be beneficial and not prohibitive because it might be more money now but it will be worth it in the near future due to the many benefits and environmental benefits as well.

• The green building cost would probably be more than initial building costs.

• The prevention would fall into play if budget didn't allow for green technologies.

• If owners were smart then, green building is the way to go, because it holds benefits in the future that will improve there business profits rather than diminish there profits due to traditional building methods.

What Forms of Alternate Energy Green Buildings Implement• Could include the

following: • Solar panels on

the roofs• Smaller wind mills

on top of roofs• Building design to

allow for more natural light

• Energy efficient windows to keep buildings cooler

• On Green Buildings, architects are using the latest technology to implement all possible energy sources to make available to use on green buildings.

• Basically if other energy sources can be put on or into a building then most likely it is being used or engineered to be used in the future.
