Before we meet the participle…• Let’s review adjectives, nouns, and verbs– A noun is a person, place, or thing, or sometimes an idea

• Examples of nouns: cat, book, happiness, California

– An adjective is a word that describes a noun.• Examples:

– All of my students are very smart.– The purple and blue hydrangeas are my favorite flowers.

– A verb is either an action word, or a state of being word• Examples of action verbs:

– Jump, scream, run, laugh, dance

• Examples of state of being verbs:– am, is, are, was, were

Introducing the Participle!• definition: a verb ending in “-

ing”, “ed” or “en” yet used as an adjective; it is placed BEFORE the noun it describes.

Examples:Baked brownies (verb: bake)Jumping rabbits (verb: jump)Glazed donuts (verb: glaze)Excited students (verb: excite)
