GOD HAS CALLED US
TO LIFE AND RESURRECTION St. Justin Martyr
Indeed, God calls even the body to resurrection,
and promises it everlasting life. When He prom-
ises to save man, He thereby makes His promise
to the flesh: for what is man but a rational living
being composed of soul and body?
Is the soul by itself a man? No, it is but the soul
of a man. Can the body be called a man? No, it
can only be called the body of a man.
If then, neither of these is by itself a man, but
that which is composed of the two together is
called man, and God has called man to life and
resurrection, He has called not a part, but the
whole man, which is the soul and the body.
The resurrection is of the flesh which dies, for
the spirit does not die. The soul is in the body,
which cannot live without a soul. The body,
when the soul departs from it, is not. These, in
those who have a genuine hope and unquestion-
ing faith in God, will be saved.
About Justin Martyr……
St. Justin was one of the early defenders of
Christianity. He was born in the year 100 and
was martyred in 165 AD.
This passage is based on a section of his treatise
“On the Resurrection.”

OUR SISTER COMMUNITIES of St George (Chicago,
Schererville, DeKalb) invite you to Vespers on the evening of
Pascha, and Divine Liturgy on Monday, May 2nd, in honor of
the Feastday of St. George. (Liturgy will NOT be celebrated at
St. Haralambos on May 2nd.)
OUR SISTER COMMUNITIES of Ss. Constantine and Hel-
en (Palos Hills, Rockford, Milwaukee, and Merrillville) invite
you to Vespers on Friday evening, May 20th, and Divine
Liturgy on Saturday, May 21st, in honor of the Feastday of Ss.
Constantine and Helen. (Liturgy WILL be celebrated at St.
Haralambos on May 21st.)
SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK-We urge Orthodox
Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable
to attend church (hospitalized or at home) to contact the church office
so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them.
If your loved one is hospitalized please call us, even if the illness is
not serious! In a wholistic approach to healing and well-being, a
visit from the priest can be very positive. Most hospitals do not
inform us when they receive patients from our parish. We depend
on you!
BLESSINGS OF INFANTS—Forty days after birth, a child and its
mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ
who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please
call the church office to arrange this blessing.
BAPTISMS—Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms.
Plan ahead!—there are some days when Baptisms are not performed.
Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child
is supposed to be given one name when he or she is baptized.
WEDDINGS—Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least
eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all
necessary marriage preparation.
CONFESSION—Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please
call the church office to schedule Confession.
MEMORIAL SERVICES—Memorial Services are offered for the
eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customari-
ly, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at
3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more proper-
ly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls.
END OF LIFE ISSUES
1 - The Right to a Proper Funeral
It is an honor to have a church funeral. When the funeral does not
take place at the church it indicates that someone is not in good order.
Sometimes out of convenience, we consider omitting a church funeral
for our loved ones, not realizing that we are depriving them of their
right to be honored. Let us honor our parents and relatives with the
respect they deserve!
2 - About Cremation
We believe that in the General Resurrection, our bodies and souls
will be restored to each other. Cremation is the deliberate desecration
and destruction of what God has made, and is viewed as the denial of
the Resurrection.
In cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person
to be cremated, thus choosing to disregard our understanding of the
Resurrection, the honor of a church funeral is not given, either in the
church, or the funeral home or any other place.
Additionally, memorial services with kolyva are not allowed, since
the connection of the “kernel of wheat” as a sign of the Resurrection
has been intentionally destroyed.

From Father Dean May 2016
Dear Friends and Fellow Stewards,
“Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is Risen!”
Pascha is all about Love, Heaven and Forgiveness! As we celebrate
our Lord’s glorious Resurrection, we should be filled with joy, love
and forgiveness for one another, for friends, strangers, relatives and
even enemies! This is what Jesus did, and we should imitate Him!
Friday after Pascha is the celebration of the Life-Giving Fountain
(Ζωοδόχος Πηγή), and this is the name of the chapel at the St.
Iakovos Camp and Retreat Center. All are invited to Liturgy to cele-
brate the feastday of the chapel, and a cookout reception after church.
Plan to join in!
We also hope you are planning to join us at our Big Lamb Cook-
Off on Saturday, May 7! There will be a Lamb Roast Competition,
followed by a delicious full lamb dinner and music! (More infor-
mation on page 7.)
Can you help with our Baby Bottle Drive? We are using baby bot-
tles to collect spare change and raise money for the Mary and Martha
Maternity House, which provides a safe home for women with crisis
pregnancies. Your spare change can make a difference!
With the month of May, our energies also turns to the events
surrounding the end of the school year. Graduations, parties, cookouts,
Junior Olympics and our Memorial Day Picnic give us so much to be
grateful for!
Graduation time! Our Preschool’s Graduation Program will take
place on Friday, June 3 and our Afternoon Greek School Graduation
and Party will take place on Sunday, June 5. Our Saturday Greek
School will have its End of the Year Program on Saturday, June 11,
and May 15 will be the last day of Sunday School.
The Junior Olympics will take place May 27-29 at Ss. Constantine
and Helen in Palos Hills, and we expect to have a huge participation
from the young people of St. Haralambos!
We all look forward to our annual Memorial Day Picnic, taking
place on Monday, May 30. Pack your family and your picnic basket
and join us for a great day in the park!
Before we know it, it will be time for our annual Big Greek Food
Fest. Plenty of help will be needed. We are so grateful to those parish-
ioners who schedule their summer vacation around the Festival so that
they can be able to help. This is greatly appreciated! Chairmanships are
being created; if you would like to offer your help, please let us know!
Let us be grateful to God, and enjoy all the wonderful opportunities
that lay ahead!

What does your church mean to you?
What does your church offer to you?

the many other blessings you derive from your church?

grams?
A N S W E R: Your STEWARDSHIP!
These are the questions we should ask when we determine our lev-
el of stewardship every year! Everyone should have a different
stewardship level from everyone else, and every year it should

our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our
Church.
If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so.
There is no minimum, but true stewardship means heartfelt giving
in proportion to our resources and income. You belong here!

ON THE PASSOVER Melito of Sardis (167-68 A.D.)
And thus he was lifted up upon the tree, and an inscription
was affixed identifying the one who had been murdered.
Who was he? It is painful to tell, but it is more dreadful not
to tell. Therefore, hear and tremble because of him for whom
the earth trembled.
The one who hung the earth in space, is himself hanged; the
one who fixed the heavens in place, is himself impaled; the
one who firmly fixed all things, is himself firmly fixed to the
tree. The Lord is insulted, God has been murdered, the King
of Israel has been destroyed by the right hand of Israel.
O frightful murder! O unheard of injustice! The Lord is dis-
figured and he is not deemed worthy of a cloak for his na-
ked body, so that he might not be seen exposed. For this rea-
son the stars turned and fled, and the day grew quite dark,
in order to hide the naked person hanging on the tree, dark-
ening not the body of the Lord, but the eyes of men.
Yes, even though the people did not tremble, the earth trem-
bled instead; although the people were not afraid, the heav-
ens grew frightened; although the people did not tear their
garments, the angels tore theirs; although the people did not
lament, the Lord thundered from heaven, and the most high
uttered his voice.
Why was it like this, O Israel? You did not tremble for the
Lord. You did not fear for the Lord. You did not lament for
the Lord, yet you lamented for your firstborn. You did not
tear your garments at the crucifixion of the Lord, yet you
tore your garments for your own who were murdered. You
forsook the Lord; you were not found by him. You dashed
the Lord to the ground; you, too, were dashed to the ground,
and lie quite dead.
But he arose from the dead and mounted up to the heights
of heaven. When the Lord had clothed himself with humani-
ty, and had suffered for the sake of the sufferer, and had
been bound for the sake of the imprisoned, and had been
judged for the sake of the condemned, and buried for the
sake of the one who was buried, he rose up from the dead,
and cried aloud with this voice: Who is he who contends
with me? Let him stand in opposition to me. I set the con-
demned man free; I gave the dead man life; I raised up the
one who had been entombed.
Who is my opponent? I, he says, am the Christ. I am the one
who destroyed death, and triumphed over the enemy, and
trampled Hades under foot, and bound the strong one, and
carried off man to the heights of heaven, I, he says, am the
Christ.
Therefore, come, all families of men, you who have been
befouled with sins, and receive forgiveness for your sins. I
am your forgiveness, I am the passover of your salvation, I
am the lamb which was sacrificed for you, I am your ran-
som, I am your light, I am your savior, I am your resurrec-
tion, I am your king, I am leading you up to the heights of
heaven, I will show you the eternal Father, I will raise you
up by my right hand.
This is the one who made the heavens and the earth, and
who in the beginning created man, who was proclaimed
through the law and prophets, who became human via the
virgin, who was hanged upon a tree, who was buried in the
earth, who was resurrected from the dead, and who ascend-
ed to the heights of heaven, who sits at the right hand of the
Father, who has authority to judge and to save everything,
through whom the Father created everything from the
beginning of the world to the end of the age.
This is the alpha and the omega. This is the beginning and
the end–an indescribable beginning and an incomprehensi-
ble end. This is the Christ. This is the king. This is Jesus. This
is the general. This is the Lord. This is the one who rose up
from the dead. This is the one who sits at the right hand of
the Father. He bears the Father and is borne by the Father, to
whom be the glory and the power forever. Amen.
St Nikolai (Velimirovich), describing
the Paschal service in Jerusalem
We waited and at last our expectations were fulfilled. When
the Patriarch sang “Christ is risen”, a heavy burden fell from
our souls. We felt as if we also has been raised from the
dead. All at once, from all around, the same cry resounded
like the noise of many waters. “Christ is risen” sang the
Greeks, the Russians, the Arabs, the Serbs, the Copts, the
Armenians, the Ethiopians — one after another, each in his
own tongue, in his own melody... Coming out of the service
at dawn, we began to regard everything in the light of the
glory of Christ’s Resurrection, and all appeared different
from what if had yesterday; everything seemed better, more
expressive, more glorious. Only in the light of the Resurrec-
tion does life receive meaning.
