• Greeks were the first to have citizens• They were members of a political community
and treated each other as equals• Does this mean that everyone in the
community was equal?? • NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!
Only free native born men who owned land were citizens
• What about women and children??• Women and children could be citizens but had
no rights

• What about slaves & people not born in your polis?– They were not allowed to be citizens
• What if you didn’t own land?– Some polis’ did away with this rule of
owning land, as long as you were a free native born male you could be a citizen!
