Foreword

My name is Tyson Montoya Alexis Greaves. It is my pleasure to share my portfolio with you. My experiences at the University of Miami, as an undergraduate student, mas-

ter ’s candidate, and intern, honed my skills as a writer and designer, and will allow me to flourish as a professional. The pages that follow amass a small sample of my work. I hope you learn a bit about me and that you see how I can be an asset to your organization.

Should you have any questions or would like to review more of my work, feel free to reach me anytime at (706) 662-3371 or [email protected]. Thank you and enjoy!

Press Releases

This section demonstrates my ability to write press releases. The first release is a book re-view and reprinting announcement. The goal of the assignemnt was to entice readers to rediscover great works of the early 20th century. The real challenge was to summarize the book without revealing so much that it spoiled the plot for the reader. I chose to review The World of Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse; it proved to be a good read and surprisingly insightful.

The second is an event announcement for a superstar client. My client Shaquille O’Neal always finds imaginative ways to interact with his fans. The event in question, though it did not actually happen, reflects the free spirit and spontaneity that the Big Dr. Diesel brings to everything he does.

Blogs

For this assignment, we had to watch a live sporting event and upload a blog post within two hours of its conclusion. I chose to blog about the regular season matchup between the Duke Blue Devils and the UNC Tar Heels. The “Battle of the Blues” is one of the most storied rivalries in college basketball. The history between these two can fill volumes, but this game in particular was riddled with drama; this blog post pretty much wrote itself.

Speeches

My eyes glaze over. This “MEGO” effect, as my PR Fundamentals professor called it, hap-pens to audiences when they get bored during speeches. He challenged us to com-pose a speech that would captivate the audience’s interest, without using any cli-chés or hackneyed phrases. We were to draft a short welcome speech for the dean to deliver at orientation. I took this as an opportunity to share some good advice.

Each student in my nonprofit seminar was tasked to choose a local nonprof-it organization, observe its operations, and design a public relations plan that fit its needs. I designed this campaign in cooperation with Miami Children’s Hospi-tal Foundation. The Foundation exists to raise awareness and funds for Miami Chil-dren’s Hospital, the only specialized hospital in South Florida specifically for children.

After a period of extended observation, I realized that the Foundation did not have an effective means to evaluate its special events. A comprehensive evalu-ation system is necessary to measure whether objectives and benchmarks are achieved, and demonstrates an event’s return on investment and expectations. The “Assess for Success” program that I developed allows them to do just that.

Photo Layout

I took a course as an undergraduate that focused on graphic design for public rela-tions professionals. The course taught me the ins and outs of design, and how to use programs, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, to make projects for clients and to promote my personal brand as welll. My first major project was to create a layout, in the style of a magazine or flyer, complete with at least four images and captions.

This piece is my spin on an ESPN the Magazine two-page spread. My goal was to capture the excitement that Shaun White brings to professional snowboarding. The images them-selves reflect the incredible “vert” that White reaches on each of his runs, and the captions lie in a pattern that forms a visual half-pipe for the reader to follow. I used a three by four grid to organize each episode of the piece, which helped to tell its story and maintain its flow.

Newsletter

This assignment brought out my inner child. The task was to design a newslet-ter for an organization. It did not matter if the organization actually existed, so I decided to stretch my imagination a bit. My experience as an intern at Miami Chil-dren’s Hospital Foundation inspired me to create something that kids would enjoy.

I approached this assignment as if I were a character in Steven Spielberg’s hit cartoon, “the Animaniacs.” This is my interpretation of how a newspaper in a cartoon community would look. The nameplate design was a bit of a challenge, but it holds true to the water tower theme and captures the spirit of the Warner Brothers and their cartoon comrades.

Brochure

This number was my final project for my design class. I wanted to create something that could get several uses, not only by me, but by my fraternity. My brothers and advisers made a great impact on my life in college, so I dedicated my effort to making something for them.

I decided to make a brochure that they could give to interested rushes at recruitment. The eight-panel creation gives prospective members a glimpse at Greek life on campus and paints a portrait of the Phi Mu Alpha man. Sinfonians, as we call ourselves, are men of music, so I went with the iPod theme to reflect our musical ideals and to make this brochure stand out.
