Mexican  Light  Source  Industry  Study

Synchrotron  light  use  extends  to  a  diversity  of  direct  induatrial  applications.

The  objective  of   this  department   is   to  establish  a  relationship  with  the  provate  and  industrial  sector,  thus  driving  technological  innovation.

As   a   first   step,   we   are   gathering   all   the   information   available   regarding   the  industrial   applications   of   synchrotron   light,   elaborating   a   catalog   of   relevant  experiments  done  directly  by  companies  at  different  synchrotrons.

The   following   are   some  of   the   case   studies   found  out   of   some  4000   examples  found  in  the  last  10  years  of  operation:

Cement  industry  Looking   for   a   more   environmentally  friendly   cement   manfacture   process,  the  company  CTG  Italcementi  used  the  s y n c h r o t r o n   l i g h t   f r om   t h e  ALS(Berkeley)   to   study   ancient   roman  concrete,   known   to   withstand  maritime  environments  after  thousads  of  years.  It  was   revealed   that   the   cementitious  component   Al-‐tobermorite   was  responsible   for   the   high   resistance   of  this  type  of  concrete.

Renewable  energies  F o r   t h e   d e v e l o pme n t   o f   n ew  photovoltaic   cells  using  organic   low  cost  environmentally   firendly   materials,   the  company  UKOPV  carried  out  real  time  in  s i tu   s tud ies   o f   the   changes   in  morphology   during   the   coating   process  of   these   photovoltaic   cells,   helping   to  understand  how  the  use  of  this  materials  affect  the  structure  of  the  films.

Chemical  Industry  In   order   to   reduce   the   use   of  surfactant   (non   sustainable,   costly  cleaning   agent)   used   also   as   a  thickener   in   cleaning   products,   the  companies   Uniliver,   Croda   Specialty  Chemicals   and   Nrockwood   Additives  study   the   alternative   use   of   cellulose  as  a  thickener,  using  synchrotron  light  to   analyze   its   gelation   behaviour,   in  o r d e r   t o   manu fa c t u r e   mo re  enironmentally   friendly   and   cost  effective  products.

Automotive  catalysts  The   company   Johnson   Matthey   used  Diamond   synchrotron   facility   to   carry  out   in   situ   studies   under   controlled  environments,   mimicking   industrial  conditions,   to   determine   the   presence  of   oxidic   and   metallic   component  species  in  fresh  and  road-‐aged  catalysts.  The   conditions   in   which   these   analysis  where   made   are   not   possible   in  conventional  laboratories.

Healthcare  and  cosmetics  Zinc   oxide   nanoparticles,   present   in  several  body  products  like  sunscreen  could  represent  a  health  risk  to  humans.  A  collaboration  of   several   institutions  and  the   Australian   Synchrotron   found   that  macrophagues   in   the   body   destroy   these  nanoparticles   before   they   enter   the  bloodstream.

Aeronautics  At   Diamond   synchrotron   facility,   the  compay   Rolls-‐Royce   was   able   to  characterize  the  depth  and  magnitude  of   compressive   stresses  on   the  blades  of  some  of  their  turbine  engines.  The  precision  of   these  analys  was   is  a  lot   higher   than   on   conventional  laboratories,   as   well   as   they   were  completely   non-‐destructive,   allowing  the  use  of  the  parts  afterwards.

Agriculture  Natural   fertilizers   that   provide   healthy  food  without  damaging  the  environment.  At   PETRA   III   (Germany),   the   company  NanoGeo   Finland   Oy   studies   the  structural   changes   in   the   production  process   of   thei   vermiculite   based  fertilizers.  Vermiculite  is  a  natural  mineral.

Farmacéutica  In   order   to  maintain   the  quality   of   its  p r o d u c t s ,   t h e   c o m p a n y  GlazoSmithKline  studies  the  impurities  of   its   products.   On   a   conventional  laboratory   the   detection   limit   of  impurites  lies  at  15%.  Thanks   to   analysis   carried   out  Diamond   (UK)   synchrotron   facility   this  detection   limit   was   reduced   down   to  10%,   achieving   thus   a   tighter   quality  control  of  its  products.

Cultural  Heritage  Identification   of   materials   used   in  medieval   paintings.   At   ANKA   sinfrared  microscopy   was   used   to   analyze   small  samples   extracted   form   medieval  paintings,   being   able   to   identify   the  components  present  in  the  different  layers  of  the  art  pieces.

IR  spectrum  of  lead  oxide  (Pb3O4)  present  in   the   XV   century   tableau   at   Santa  Euralia’s  church,  Spain.
