Introducing Greater Nashua’s Emerging Leaders ★ ★★ ★

Bill Schick

★ ★★★ ★★

Bill Schick is the Owner and Chief Creative at MESH Interactive in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Founded in 2006, Bill has grown the business from a sole-proprietorship consultancy to a full service agency with six staff and over 10 creative contractors. MESH provides clients with comprehensive marketing, creative and web-based business building solutions. Nearly doubling the business almost every year, Bill attributes his success to the company’s integrated, client-centric approach, and the wide variety and breadth of its clientele. While clients range across the globe, Nashua-area clients include Lawn Dawg, Persian Rug Galleries, and Melanson Heath & Company, PC.

Prior to starting MESH, Bill worked in creative roles for a variety of firms. From learning business management skills on the job while heading up a family-owned printing company in Boston, to driving marketing strategy as Creative Director for a major medical device company, Bill has experience in most aspects of marketing, creative and business development. Accomplishments include dramatically increasing sales, positioning companies for acquisition, and helping one company go public.

Bill believes strongly in supporting the community, and has contributed time, services and more to local organizations in an effort to strengthen local bonds. He is active within the Nashua, Manchester and Concord Chambers of Commerce, and has provided support to local non-profits including the YMCA of Greater Nashua, Humane Society for Greater Nashua, Child Advocacy Center of Hillsborough County, and Beyond Influence, a division of the United Way.

Bill has been featured as a panelist on New Hampshire’s Forum on the Future, has participated in NHBR’s round table on business climate, and been cited in Print CEO and Nonprofit Technology News among others.

Bill was born in Vermont, and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend Northeastern University. Ultimately Bill earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications. He lived and worked in the Greater Boston Area for nearly ten years, before moving to Nashua about five years ago. Bill currently lives in Merrimack, New Hampshire with his wife, son, and various cats, gophers and chipmunks. He enjoys playing guitar, traveling and hiking.

Who do you most admire? My wife. She is a medical engineer and very analytical and no-nonsense—she compliments me well.

Please describe a current professional challenge: My firm, MESH Interactive is growing dramatically. My challenge is to help facilitate that growth organically, without letting my big head get in the way.

What was your last major achievement? Ah, there are just sooooo many. I would say staying in business during some major

financial upheavals. That’s really more a reflection on my team, tho.

Please name two admired peers: Michael Conway and Kelly Dinoff

In one sentence, what do you believe to be the biggest problem facing Nashua? The biggest problem we face in Nashua is the looming disconnect between various areas: between established business and new business; between historical approaches to growth and new approaches, between existing culture and imported; between employers and skilled workers.

What is your favorite place in Nashua? Nashua has a number of public parks where I take my six-year-old son—these all vie for my favorite.

What are you currently reading? Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life by Neil Strauss

How do you relax? I read to my son, play my guitar, go for a vigorous and much-needed workout at the Y.

Name your Top 3 Frequented websites: Heh. Facebook. Google. And whatever client we’re launching that week.

Please tell us three things or activities you enjoy for entertainment: Getting out—good food, drink, music, some sort of activity (billiards perhaps), and friends. No, I can’t count.

They come from different backgrounds, work in different careers, and pursue different interests. Yet, this group of 26 individuals represents the future of Greater Nashua, recognized by the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce as emerging leaders who will influence the direction of the Greater Nashua community in the years to come.

The 26 emerging leaders showcased in this special Telegraph edition are part of a unique leadership program facilitated by the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce, known as “Leadership Greater Nashua.”

These individuals were selected for the competitive program, based upon their achievements within their company or within the community, and upon written and oral interviews facilitated by leaders within the business community.

“The Leadership Greater Nashua program has continued to evolve over the past several years, and we were expecting to receive very competitive nominations as a result. However, we were surprised by the large number of nominations and the extremely high caliber of those who interviewed for the program,” said Chris Williams, President of the Chamber of Commerce. Deb Titus, Managing Director of Dale Carnegie-NH and the

chairman of the steering committee that facilitates the leadership program, agreed with Williams, saying, “this year’s class of participants is truly an outstanding bunch who we believe represents the best that our community has to offer.”

The 26 emerging leaders in this insert demonstrate a passion for the Greater Nashua community, and champion a wide variety of issues important to the region’s future.

Participants such as Linda LaFleur, the Program Coordinator for the city of Nashua, believe the Greater Nashua region needs to foster the continued development of a diversified, sustainable and vibrant economy. Others, such as Eric Jackson of The Stabile Companies, believe the future viability of the region will depend on addressing the vibrancy and accessibility into downtown through new road infrastructure and attractive, balanced and well planned development.

The personalities and backgrounds of these 26 emerging leaders are as disparate as their visions for the region. Ricky Lovering, General Manager of Lovering Volvo for 9 years, with both a family a family business rooted in this region has a long and in-depth understanding of Nashua issues that is far different from Angela Provencher, who serves as the Executive Assistant and HR Manager at The

Nashua Bank on Main Street in downtown Nashua.“I am tremendously excited about this crop of emerging

leaders, and the impact they will have on the Greater Nashua region,” said Beth Davis of Hamblett & Kerrigan, P.A., who serves as the Chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. “We expect great things from this group, and look forward to following their progress as they go through the program over the next nine months.”

In addition to the regular program, the 26 participants highlighted in this edition will develop a strategic plan focusing on local projects or initiatives they feel will improve the Greater Nashua region, and detailing how best to achieve those initiatives. These plans will be presented to the Chamber’s Board of Directors at the end of the program next June, which the Chamber can then choose to adopt and pursue.

Profiles of each emerging leader can be viewed in the following pages of this edition. Readers can learn more about this group, which companies they work for, and what their interests are.

Questions about the Leadership Greater Nashua program can be directed to the Chamber of Commerce at 603-881-8333.

Ashley Smith

Ashley Smith is The Telegraph’s business editor. She is responsible for planning and coordinating

the paper’s local business coverage, and is also the paper’s lead business writer. Next month, Ashley will take on a second role as editor of The Lobby, a new subscription-based website focusing exclusively on New Hampshire business and politics. The site is being launched Oct. 18 in a partnership between The Telegraph and New Hampshire Business Review. Relying on the expertise of veteran reporters from both publications, the site will be edgy, predictive and a must-read for political junkies and the business community alike.

Ashley joined The Telegraph is 2004 as a reporting intern and never left. She held various reporting roles, including Amherst reporter, Hudson/Litchfield reporter, and business reporter, before being promoted to business editor in 2008. She is the recipient of several journalism industry awards for business coverage, most recently winning second place in the 2010 New England Associated Press News Executives Association contest in the “beat reporting” category. She and colleague David Brooks claimed first place for business reporting in the 2009 competition for coverage of the FairPoint transition. In addition to her current role, Ashley serves on the paper’s marketing committee and editorial board.

Ashley graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in English/Journalism. She grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and remains a loyal Colts fan, despite constant grief from native New Englanders. She lives in Portsmouth, where she enjoys running, reading, anything involving the beach and spending quality time with good friends.

Who do you most admire? Anyone willing to take big risks to accomplish their goals

Describe a current professional challenge: My biggest professional challenge right now is taking on an additional role as editor of the Lobby, a new business and politics website The Telegraph and New Hampshire Business Review are launching this fall. It’s a new business model for The Telegraph, and I’m invested in making it a success. This is also my first foray as lead editor of a publication or website.

In one sentence, what do you believe to be the biggest problem facing Nashua? People from other parts of the state don’t view Nashua as a destination point. Manchester has the Verizon Center and Portsmouth draws tourists, but Nashua is often thought of as simply a place to go shopping. The city has a lot more than that to offer – it’s just a matter of getting the word out.

Cynthia Clarke lives in Nashua, NH with her husband, Peter and daughter, Ashley who is in her

sophomore year at Keene State College. Cindy has a real passion for teaching and has known this since she was in 5th grade. With that said, she has held many teaching positions over the years.

Cindy started her career in her hometown of Winchester, Massachusetts teaching students 16 to 21 yrs. old in a life skills program. She then moved to teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade. In trying to make ends meet, Cindy took a job with the U.S. Postal Service and worked as a letter carrier, clerk and eventually a supervisor overseeing the day to day operations germane to a medium sized postal facility. Once Cindy moved to Nashua she went from managing postal employees to managing restaurant employees at the former D.B.Cooper’s Restaurant in Nashua. Knowing that she couldn’t be away from her passion for long, Cindy joined the Rivier College Early Childhood Center in Nashua, NH. There she created her own developmentally appropriate curriculum for Kindergarten students including those with special needs. Cindy also supervised college practicum students at Rivier helping to guide them in the use of best practices in education. Five years later she joined St. Christopher School in Nashua, NH teaching preschool and then 5th grade.

Cindy began working for the Nashua School District in 2004 as an intensive special needs teacher. She was instrumental in developing a program for autistic students at Nashua High School North. Currently she is the Special Services Administrator for the Nashua School District and oversees all intensive special needs programs as well as the extended year summer program and anything else that comes her way. Cindy loves collaborating with her colleagues at the District office and serves on several committees that focus on student learning and excellence in teaching.

Cindy graduated from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts with a BS

in Elementary Education and Special Education. She recently completed her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Lesley University. Currently Cindy is enrolled at New England College to pursue a Masters of Education in Leadership. She would like to be a principal some day.

Cindy has been a volunteer at Immaculate Conception Church, St. Christopher School, Bishop Guertin High School, the Nashua Soup Kitchen, and she was a member of Nashua’s Great American Downtown Winter Holiday Stroll committee for two years.

In her “spare” time Cindy likes to join in supporting breast cancer awareness by participating in programs like the Avon 3-day Breast Cancer walk where she walked 60 miles from Fitchburg to Boston, as well as participating in the annual Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk in Nashua. She is an 18 year cancer survivor. Cindy also enjoys spending lots of time with her family and friends.

Donna Davis is employed as a Practice Manager in the Nashua division of the Dartmouth

Hitchcock Community Group practices, in the Hudson Family Practice satellite. She received her Certification in Medical Assisting from NH Poly-Technical Institute and began her career at Dartmouth Hitchcock in 1992 as a CMA. She has been the Manager at the Hudson site since 2005. Her daily operational duties, include both clinical and administrative quality improvement initiatives with a passion for excellence in customer service. Quality improvement focuses on primary care redesign, operational efficiencies and workflow analysis. Most recently her site has been chosen as a pilot site by the DHC Regional Planned Care committee for Medical Home Redesign. Donna also sits on various committees for the clinic which include the Nashua Medical Home Implementation team, Service Recovery Team and the Safety Committee. She also is involved with the Leadership Development Institute which has been ongoing over the past 4 years. These quarterly seminars, which were initially led by the Studer Group, focus on achieving excellence in healthcare by creating a better place for employees to work, providers to practice medicine and patients to receive care. Donna is also involved in a monthly Operational Leaders Training session that was instituted this year by Dartmouth Hitchcock’s Achieving Excellence director.

Her community involvement includes Nashua’s Day of Caring, Making Strides for Breast Cancer and volunteering at numerous Health Care Fairs. Her future aspiration is to become a child advocate with CASA.

Donna resides in Merrimack with her husband Peter. She has 3 grown children, all of whom live in the Nashua area and 2 grand children.

List your Top 3 Volunteer Activities: Day of Caring, Making Strides for Breast

Cancer Walks, and I plan on becoming a child advocate for CASA. (In the past, I seemed to find it hard to afford the time…but I am becoming increasingly more aware of my personal need and desire to become more active in volunteering)

Who do you most admire? My parentsPlease describe a current professional

challenge: I am currently involved in a pilot project for DHC that is challenging our practice to change the way primary care is practiced in a huge way. Our mission is to think outside the box in regards to how we manage our patient population with disregard to the current RVU method of compensation yet with attention still focused on quality of care, growth and

Donna Davis

utilization of healthcare dollars. As practice manager, my challenge is to engage my staff and providers in this endeavor. Change and challenges are not as fun for some people as they are for others of us. I must project a vision that is going to motivate and excite everyone on staff to the level that we need them engaged to move forward step by step in a team effort.

What was your last major achievement?I led a process improvement project

with our staff to increase our metrics in hypertension that shows how many of our patients had a blood pressure of less than 140/90. When we started the project, our numbers showed 72% of our patients had met that criteria. Our goal was to increase it to 75%. It’s been less than a year and we are now at 81%.

Please name two admired peers: Patricia Fajans, Patricia LaliberteIn one sentence, what do you believe to be

the biggest problem facing Nashua? Lack of job opportunities which would

be financially attractive enough to retain our college graduates.

Describe a current professional challenge: My challenge on a daily basis is to provide the support needed to Intensive and Special Needs teachers, so that they may provide quality instruction to their students.

What was your last major achievement? The biggest was surviving cancer…..twice!! The most recent was completing my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Lesley University while working and supporting a family.

Please name two admired peers: I admire many of my peers from teachers to administrators, but two that stand out in my mind are: Althea Sheaff, Assistant Superintendent, Nashua School District for the knowledge and expertise she brings to our district. David Ryan, Principal Nashua High School North for always being open to everyone’s thoughts and ideas, and having a great sense of humor while handling one of the biggest high schools in NH.

In one sentence, what do you believe to be the biggest problem facing Nashua? The biggest problem facing Nashua is the inability for families to make ends meet in these trying financial times.

What is your favorite place in Nashua? I love downtown Nashua! It reminds me of my hometown of Winchester, Massachusetts; interesting shops, fantastic restaurants, collaborative business community and great people.

Eric Jackson, born in Nashua and a long-time resident of Amherst, Mr. Jackson graduated from

Milford High School in 1991. He moved on to attended Northeastern University in Boston where he graduated summa cum laude with a major in small business management before earning his masters degree from MIT with a focus on real estate development.

While at Northeastern, Mr. Jackson assumed a leadership role both in the classroom and on the athletic field, captaining the men’s varsity soccer team for three years and taking the helm of the University’s Student Athlete Advisory Board. After graduating, Mr. Jackson joined the professional ranks as one of the first homegrown New Hampshire athletes to play for the Phantoms of New Hampshire professional soccer team, where he quickly earned his stripes as the team’s leading goal scorer in his rookie season. After three years and a lingering ankle injury, Mr. Jackson brought his competitive spirit from the athletic field to the business table. In 1998, Mr. Jackson joined Cushman & Wakefield’s New Hampshire commercial real estate brokerage team where he specialized in the sales and leasing of office and industrial properties across Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts.

During his time with Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. Jackson participated in more than $300 million in transactions including the sales of various prominent commercial properties in Nashua including 100 Northwest Boulevard, One Indian Head Plaza, 410 & 472 Amherst Street, 6 & 15 Trafalgar Square and 22 Cotton Road, among others. Mr. Jackson is the recipient of Cushman & Wakefield’s Client Service Excellence Award for the New England region and is an active member of the New Hampshire Commercial Investment Board of Realtors. In June of 2010 Mr. Jackson joined The Stabile Companies as Director of Acquisitions & Development where he is now responsible for oversight of multi-family, single-family and commercial property acquisitions as well as the firm’s current development and commercial leasing activities. The Stabile Companies remain focused on providing high quality housing at affordable prices across Southern New Hampshire and Mr. Jackson is committed to bringing this vision into the next decade.

Outside the boardroom, Mr. Jackson is an avid musician and is the front-man for the popular New Hampshire-based rock quintet known as Best Not Broken. Voted one of New Hampshire’s best bands two years running, the band has grown from a local phenomenon to one with burgeoning

Eric Jackson

regional popularity – recently having performed with national chart-topping artists such as Jason Derulo and Matt Nathanson as well as classic rock icons Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian, formerly of the band Boston.

Mr. Jackson has used his passion for music as a vehicle to give back to the community and has volunteered time as well as songs and performances to a host of local and national charities such as The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), the Gold Star Mothers Memorial Association, Crossroads House, The Caregivers and others.

Who do you most admire? My dad. He’s been a role model in many ways, but specifically he’s built a legacy of integrity, hard work and how to always wear a smile.

Describe a current professional challenge: Making an efficient transition from commercial real estate to multi and single-family development.

In one sentence, what do you believe to be the biggest problem facing Nashua? With a trend towards urbanization, even in smaller cities, the downtown area of Nashua needs more convenient and efficient automobile access from the F.E. Everett Turnpike in order to benefit from future growth opportunities – hopefully the Broad Street Parkway will provide such access.

What is your favorite place in Nashua? Main Street at the Nashua River

Jaron Slattery

Jaron Slattery was born and raised in Hudson, NH and has always been a resident of the greater

Nashua community. He moved to Nashua, NH when he was sixteen and attended Bishop Guertin High School, where he graduated from in 1999. After graduating from Bishop Guertin he decided he wanted to travel a bit for school and get away from home. Jaron decided on the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA to study Landscape Architecture with a specialization in golf course design.

His scholastic accomplishments were very honorable; Jaron graduated in the top five in his class, was a seven semester Presidential Scholar, was a member of the Sigma Lambda Alpha honor society for Landscape Architecture, was a candidate for the International Mission on the Environment in Australia (2002), and won numerous design awards including the prestigious Georgia Master Gardener’s Award for his Hartwell Botanical Garden design. While at the University of Georgia Jaron also did as much as he could to get involved within the Athens community that had so openly welcomed him.

One of the very first people Jaron met at the University of Georgia was Clarke-

You are a great representative for the construction industry, our organization and the community.

We are very proud of you!

GREATER NASHUA” program.

Central High School football coaching legend Billy Henderson. Billy helped Jaron situate himself in Athens and encouraged him to try and walk-on the football team and instilled in him the importance of working within the community. Jaron did both, making the Bulldogs expanded roster as a walk-on in 2001 and spending time with fellow peers as a staff advisory for the Athens Boys and Girls Club.

After five great years down south, and

a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree and invaluable experience to show for it, Jaron found himself set on returning to New England. In 2003 Jaron came back to New Hampshire after getting hired by Wogan and Sargent Inc., in collaboration with G.F. Sargent Construction. The two collectively were a design/ build golf course design company that was working on Montcalm Golf Club in Enfield, NH. Jaron was the primary CAD designer working under course architect George Sargent and was responsible for all of the grading plan digitizing and master plan layout and rendering. Along with the design work Jaron also got a great deal of exposure to the construction side, spending nearly half of his time working in the field. After two years of service with the two companies, Montcalm was complete.

After completion there was a one month layoff in December of 2004 before mobilization to the next course in Methuen, MA. During that month Jaron decided to accept a position at Etchstone Properties, Inc., a Nashua based real-estate Development Company founded by his father Kevin Slattery. He worked as a laborer in order to stay busy and engaged during the layoff and also continued to work with Sargent to catch up on past CAD work that needed updating. However, things began to progress well and when he got the call to go back with Wogan and Sargent, he decided to stay with Etchstone. Through time, his job description continued to change and he continued to express a keen attention to detail and a desire to advance and in August of 2008, Jaron was promoted to Project Manager.

As project manager, he is responsible for on-site performance of all residential construction projects of the company. His responsibilities include overall coordination and conflict management of land development, infrastructure, construction and customer satisfaction. Jaron is also a licensed construction supervisor in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Jaron says that working in a family business can definitely have its testing times, but also stated that he is much honored to be able to work for his father, someone that he greatly admires and respects. He recently got married in 2008 and he and his wife Inga, along with yellow lab Manny (yes, named after Manny Ramirez)have settled in Nashua, NH having recently bought a multi-family house in the city. Outside of a busy work schedule, Jaron enjoys playing golf and virtually all sports and traveling with his wife.

Jaron stated that he feels much honored to be selected for the LGN Program 2010 and he feels that the program will offer him and his classmates a wealth of invaluable knowledge, insight, and perspective. Jaron and his wife are glad to call the Greater Nashua area home.

Joshua “Josh” Sullivan is the Assistant Branch Manager at the Coliseum Avenue branch of

Citizens Bank here in Nashua. Josh was born at Memorial Hospital – now Southern NH Medical Center – in Nashua on July 25, 1978. Growing up in Londonderry, NH with his parents, one brother and one sister, he came up through the Londonderry school system and graduated from Londonderry High School in 1997. After graduating, Josh was recruited to play baseball at New England College in Henniker, NH. Unfortunately, 3 semesters in and just shy of his sophomore baseball season, rising tuition costs proved to be unaffordable and he had no choice but to leave school and join the work force.

Following a 4 year stint with Airborne Express, where Josh worked his way up from route driver to shift supervisor, he joined on with the Oak Furniture Store, where he managed the Amherst St. location just over the Merrimack border. In 2005, after returning to school at SNHU in Hooksett, Josh was fortunate enough to join a great team and a great company at Citizens Bank on Main St. here in Nashua. He spent the next 4 years as a Banker, 3 of which as the Branch Business Banker. Then, in November of 2009, Josh was promoted to the Assistant Branch Manager position of our Coliseum Ave. branch – another great team here in Nashua - which is where you will find him today.

Since 2007, Josh has been a member of the Board of Directors for an incredible organization, the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter. In 2008, Josh joined the NSKS’s Run for Food and Shelter committee and in 2009 he became the Race Chairman. He has accepted the committee’s nomination to be the Chairman for the 2010 race as well.

Aside from serving on the board of the NSKS, Josh also volunteers along with his fellow Citizens Bank colleagues to serve dinner at the Soup Kitchen every couple of months. Josh is also a regular volunteer – and Citizens Bank co-captain – for the United Ways Day of Caring here in Nashua, and he is a member of the Citizens Bank Volunteer Council, which was the Q2 recipient of the Citizens Bank “Community Stars” award.

Josh has been married to his wife, Allison, since August of 2003. They own a home in Manchester, NH and have plans to start a family once they sell their house and purchase their next home, which they hope will be within the next few months. Please list your Top 3 Volunteer Activities: Board of Directors at the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter, Co-Captain of

Frank Lagana

Frank Lagana is president of Papergraphics Print & Copy, Inc. of Merrimack which

provides quality commercial printing to local businesses and organizations throughout southern NH. Lagana has been with the company since 1989, 21 of the firm’s 28 years in business. Papergraphics was originally a partnership founded by his former wife Linda Lagana and her mother as a quick print and copy shop. Papergraphics has grown significantly over the years by keeping up with, and investing in technology. “Everything happening in the world of technology directly affects the printing industry and it’s a challenging thrill ride” states Lagana.

In the year 2000 he led the family business into the commercial arena when it installed a million dollars worth of printing and bindery equipment, thereby elevating it from a duplicator shop to a commercial print provider. As the technology improved, it added high-end digital presses to complement the traditional offset presses. He praises his staff as the force for growth from a duplicator shop to a commercial print shop featuring digital printing, traditional offset, and graphic design and mailing services.

He began his career as a bagger and floor sweeper in the business at the age of

12. Originally known as The Meat Shoppe, the family grew the business from a famed local butcher shop to the full-service Lagana’s Supermarket in Merrimack where he was general manager. Moving from one family business to another, Lagana quips, “I went from making 3 cents on a can of 9-Lives to 3 cents on a photocopy; it’s all about customer service and hard work”. With broom in hand he began learning and developing the printing business.

Liz Baker, a Nashua native, joined The Chamber as the Director of Programming in September of

2009. Prior to joining The Chamber, Liz worked in marketing and graphic design at Brighteyes Creative in Chichester, NH, a boutique marketing communications firm. While at Brigheyes, Liz fell in love with graphic design work while creating marketing materials for clients such as the Granite State Symphony Orchestra, and got her first taste of event planning when she worked with her boss to plan and execute the first official Oscar Night ® America party in the state at Red River Theatres in Concord, NH.

In her role at The Chamber, Liz is responsible for overseeing the planning of all events, including Business After Hours, The Annual Dinner, Comedy Night, The Breakfast Series and more. In addition, Liz serves on the iUGO Steering Committee, the Chamber’s Young Professional Network.

He still resides in Merrimack with his son Stephen, a senior at Merrimack High School and his daughter, Christina, a third-year college student.

Operating a family business and raising two children with Linda has left little time for community involvement. He could always be found on the sports field or dance studio supporting activities and events his children were involved in. Now at 50, Lagana wants to focus some of his

time and talents towards the community. He enjoys all that New England has to offer including bicycling, kayaking, skiing and taking in the conservation areas in our locale.

Although he dislikes “politics” he did become active in the 2008 presidential primary supporting Ron Paul. It is at that time his eyes were opened and he became frustrated in the direction our country is heading. He has become intrigued with the resurgence of the US Constitution, and supports the principles set forth by our founding fathers. Loren Foxx

How does someone who was born and raised in sunny southern California find themselves living

in New Hampshire? Believe it or not, it was by design. At the time, Loren Foxx was working in minor league baseball, and he and his family were looking for their next landing spot. The overall quality of life brought them to the area, including the accessibility of many outdoor activities.

Loren Foxx joined full service marketing agency wedü in August 2009 as an Account Manager. A native of Newport Beach, California, Loren currently works with local and national clients to cultivate their ideas and transform them into reality, whether in print, online or in person. Loren enjoys working with his diverse group of clients, helping them build their businesses by sharing his varied set of experiences gained in prior careers. And there have been quite a few of those.

Immediately before becoming a member of the wedü team, Loren worked in minor league baseball for four teams across the country, developing headline-grabbing promotions and assisting clients with their marketing and advertising needs. His roles included stints as the Vice President of Marketing for the Fisher Cats, right here in

New Hampshire; the General Manager for the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ single-A affiliate; the Director of Media Relations and broadcaster for the Kansas City T-Bones, where he helped the team gain local and national name recognition with such stunts as sending 94-year-old Negro Leagues legend “Buck” O’Neil to bat; and the Media Relations Manager

with the Hagerstown (MD) Suns, where he promoted such events as a funeral giveaway which was recognized by ESPN as the top minor league promotion of 2003.

Prior to entering the sports world, Loren was a top-producing primary care sales associate with pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company, improving results in two southern California territories. Loren is also a licensed CPA, having earned that designation partially as a result of three years spent with the Orange County (CA) office of Deloitte and Touche as a member of their audit practice.

In his spare time, Loren is the color analyst for UNH football’s radio broadcasts; an active member of the Queen City Rotary Club in Manchester; a volunteer umpire for the Bedford Little League; and an avid runner who completed the 2010 Manchester City Marathon.

A 1996 graduate of the University of Southern California with degrees in Accounting and International Finance, Loren and his family currently reside in Bedford.

I haven’t strayed too far from my roots. My very first job began in the hospitality industry as a housekeeper at the Sheraton Wayfarer, Bedford, NH and from there I have moved throughout the industry. After receiving a Culinary and Hotel/ Restaurant Management Degree from New Hampshire College, I spent a couple of summers cooking in Nantucket at The Sconset Café. I have worked in venues in the area to include, CR Sparks / The Event Center, The Center of NH Holiday Inn and The Highlander Inn in a culinary capacity. I then decided that it was time to move onward and work in the ‘front of the house.’ For the last 10 years, these positions have included Banquet Manager at the Bedford Village Inn, a Four Diamond Property located in Bedford, New Hampshire and then moved on to my current place of employment The Crowne Plaza Hotel Nashua. I started at the Crowne Plaza in 2005 as the Assistant Banquet Manager and was promoted to my current position as the Crowne Meetings Director. In this position I am the liaison between the client and the various departments within our organization. As there are no two functions alike whether it is a corporate or social event, each day and every day is exciting, challenging and ultimately rewarding. I have had the

They worked at the Maskall Village School where they developed literacy program, a school lunch program and established a library with books donated from people back home. This was a great learning experience that changed both their lives. It has also given her a first-hand understanding of other countries and cultures. She lived among them as part of their community. This experience continues at the Adult Learning Center, as she assists many people of these other countries and cultures.

Here in Nashua, Sharon has been involved in many community activities. She is an active member of the Granite State Organizing Project, on the advisory board for the International Institute, vice-chair of the Mayor’s Ethnic Awareness Task Force, a member on Nashua’s Hispanic Network and a member of the Gate City Immigrant and Refugee Integration Initiative. These connections to the Nashua Community have evolved into a Community Goal. The challenge that Sharon would like to see addressed, is how can we work together to create a Nashua that is even more welcoming for everyone, including the low income, undereducated, immigrants and refugees. Sharon hopes to be part of a team that will facilitate an even stronger connection to our citizens from all over the world, who now make Nashua their home.

Sharon lives in Windham, NH with her husband Ed. Together they have six grown children and six grandchildren. Sharon relaxes by reading, going for a long quiet drive and having absolutely NO agenda for the day. Sharon’s new favorite place to hang out in Nashua is Rotary Common with a

Sharon DaltonLabyrinth Walk, which is located right next to the Adult Learning Center.

This Leadership Greater Nashua Program will provide Sharon with a new perspective. After seeing Nashua through the eyes of the non-profit world, LGN will offer her the opportunity to gain significant insight into Nashua’s world of Business, Art, Culture and Government. This knowledge will be brought back to the Adult Learning Center and passed forward to all she meets.

Syndi Bautista, Inspector/Investigator for the Nashua Fire Rescue, Fire Marshal’s Office.

Inspector Bautista joined Nashua Fire Rescue July 2, 1999 and has served as a dispatcher, clerk/trainer, public education officer, and inspector/investigator.

Pepere for lunch most days. In October of 2008 through my work

with the Fire Marshal’s Office I met Miss Minnie. She is turning 80 this month. We adopted each other after an unfortunate situation introduced us. I recently assisted her preparing her home to be placed on the market by helping her sort through 55 years of treasures, cleaning and painting. Using my vacation time this year, I drove her with her belongings to Nova Scotia where she now resides.

my Mother most. Fran Tassie Beach was raised in orphanages and foster homes in Southern New Hampshire. She received a lot of criticism for raising her children on Central Street in Nashua but lived within

her means. Not only did she struggle to provide name brands for her three birth children, but she treated her foster children equally and legally adopted a multiple handicapped son. She taught us to be loving, honest, hardworking, trustworthy and loyal individuals.

Describe a current professional challenge: Politics are a part of every day life. We have governmental politics and workplace politics: beliefs, principles, opinions and views. I never had any desire to learn about any of it while growing up. As an emerging leader, I have discovered that progress is knowledge and gaining a better understanding of politics is in my best interest.

What was your last major achievement? Aside from my ongoing education, my husband and I just completed the legal adoption of our 18 month-old daughter Abigail. It was a very challenging yet rewarding experience. We were blessed to have the full support of both our children Shailyn age 21 and Keddy age 17.

Please name two admired peers: My husband of 23 ½ years came to the United States in 1987 from the Dominican Republic. He overcame culture shock and language barriers, quickly learned English and obtained his United States Citizenship. Carlos is a dedicated, honest, trustworthy and hardworking family man just like my parents hoped for. His greatest asset is being supportive of my decisions.

I truly admire my big brother Bill Beach because he knows how to live within his means. The only thing he has ever used

credit for is a home mortgage. He owns two Harley Davidson motorcycles, a boat and two cars – all paid for by saving up until he and his wife could afford to pay cash. His belief is that if you can’t pay for it upfront, you can’t afford to have it. His motto “If it’s free, it’s for me”. (Free and Clear)

In one sentence, what do you believe to be the biggest problem facing Nashua? In my opinion, economic hardship is causing deterioration in housing and livelihood.

What is your favorite place in Nashua? The Main Street Bridge gives me the fondest memory of childhood. I recall looking toward that big white house by the water behind Clocktower Place thinking the President must live there and hoping that some day I could live there too. My friends and I would sit at the picnic table in their yard. I couldn’t tell you how many times I made believe that house was mine or that it would at least be someday.

Leadership Greater Nashua 2010-2011 - Tuesday, October 5, 2010 15

Statement from Deb Titus, Managing Directorof Dale Carnegie – New Hampshire:

Looking forward to the LGN class of 2011, as with last year, we continue to enhance the program to ensure the desired outcomes for all. This year participants are ready to begin their monthly explorations of Leadership through three lenses:

Self - develop one’s individual leadership abilities.

Employer - develop one’s abilities to contribute even more to their sponsoring organization and employer.

Community - to develop an awareness and understanding of the Greater Nashua Area, and explore how these dynamics of the community resonate with each individual leader so that they achieve greater clarity in how they will contribute to the community by the end of the program.

We will continue to focus on the pathway of developing one’s leadership legacy. Participants have already immersed themselves in this conversation during the LGN Retreat, held September 16 and 17. They began to explore their evolving leadership brand and the ways they can develop the who they are in a way that can generate greater results for themselves, their employer and community.

Dale Carnegie - New Hampshire continues to proudly support the development of Nashua’s emerging leaders by supplementing the already dynamic LGN program with Dale Carnegie leadership development and communication training. This is a process and experience about which I am deeply committed.

We’ve made a few modifications over last year, as we did the year prior. We are going to roll out the sessions in a way that is more logical and hence, we have modified the community awareness sessions on the calendar to coincide.

We continue to commit to ensuring that the professional development component is linked and related to the community portion. The goal is to assist people in not only knowing about the community – it’s about

having the necessary skills to lead the way in the community.

Based on initial assessment and individual development goals, each participant will have a clear

connection with the content, the exercises, the application to their world of work as well as linking the learning to their leadership brand.

There will also be opportunity for participants, where applicable, to engage their mentors and managers in their development. This enables the training to make a favorable impact on those three areas noted earlier: Self, Employer and Community. As the trainer, I encourage participants and their managers to reach out to me anytime to further understanding of the content and learning that may be unique to their needs.

We already know that this group is ready to make some great things happen. They have gotten off to a great start by learning more about themselves as individuals and the potential of their class through

experiential team exercises. The Greater Nashua Area has a lot to look forward to!

I am honored to be working with such a talented group of people and look forward to every step of our journey together as leadership legacies are developed!
