INTRODUCTIONXtra Mile Events welcome you to the 2013 Greater Manchester Marathon in Trafford.

We are delighted that you have chosen to run with us. Whether you are taking part for a personal reason or physical challenge, whether it is your 1st or 50th marathon, we wish you all the best with achieving your goals.

We have planned a great day for you to enjoy. To help you, not only is this marathon the flattest in the UK, it is one of the flattest in the world.

It is also one of the most friendly and entertaining - communities and groups from throughout the host borough of Trafford will be out in force motivating you with a wide variety of entertainments from choirs to bands, and good old fashioned Mancunian hospitality. Keep an eye out for your favourites, as after the event you will be asked to vote for the best supporting community, and the best overall entertainment. Winners will be rewarded with £500 prizes in each category.

There will also be prizes for a post-race survey, as we love to hear about your xtra mile experiences and your thoughts on how we can deliver further xtra mile moments for you in future races.

The information in this booklet is designed to help you, and your supporters, to get the most out of your experience. If you have any further questions, please visit the FAQs section at www.greatermanchestermarathon.com or email us at [email protected]

RACE DAYGetting thereIf you have not booked or planned to use the car parking facility at Manchester United Football Stadium then you can still do so by following this link https://www.eticketing.co.uk/muticketsandmembership/default.aspx

If you are using public transport we strongly recommend that you use Metrolink to get to and from the Race Village.

Race Day step by step procedureArrival at Race Village

The Race Village is on E2 car park at Manchester United Football Stadium, M16 0RA . It will be open to athletes and spectators on Sunday from 7.00am. The Race Village closes at 5.00pm.

1. Race Village opens at 7.00am.

2. Arrival: depending on your mode of transport to the Marathon, you will arrive into the Race Village at E2 car park.

i. From Old Trafford Metrolink stop (Altrincham service), you will need to walk along Brian Statham Way, Warwick Road, and Sir Matt Busby Way. This Metrolink stop is less than a 10 minute walk from the Race Village.

ii. From Exchange Quay Metrolink stop (Eccles and Media City UK service), you will need to walk along Trafford Road and Trafford Wharf Road. This Metrolink stop is less than a 10 minute walk from the Race Village.

There will be marshals to help guide you from the main car park and the Metrolink stops to the Race Village and the Start Area.

If you are being dropped off then please follow the signs to the Manchester United Football Stadium car park. Please ensure that you and the car driver are not caught up in any road closures that are already in place.

3. Changing facilities are at the Changing and Baggage Storage Marquee which will be open from 7.00am to 4.30pm.

4. Check in your baggage at the Changing and Baggage Storage Marquee which will be open from 7.00am to 4.30pm. It is likely that you will bring things with you that you do not wish to take around the course, for instance, your pre-race and post-race clothing/shoes, suntan lotion, etc. Check in your bag, ensuring that you have securely attached the baggage tag that was issued with your race number. You will need your race number to claim your bag from the Baggage Storage Marquee at the end of the race.

Whilst the Baggage Storage Marquee will be manned for the duration of the event, please don´t leave anything valuable or fragile in your bag.

We do not supply you with a bag – please use your own small kit bag (this aids identification).

Unclaimed bags will be kept for 2 weeks after the event and then disposed of.

If you are part of a relay team please see the separate section about this.

5. Join in the warm up at the Capital FM zone.

6. Go to the loo – there are 3 toilet areas and over 120 units in the Race Village along with 2 urinal units; there are disabled toilet facilities too.

There will be toilets on the course adjacent to each of the aid stations, and at the refuge points. Out of respect for the local residents and businesses we would ask you to use these and not a handy bush or tree.

7. Make sure your race number is securely fixed (this has your timing chip on so don’t forget it).

8. Make your way to the Race Start area no later than 8.30am. NB there is a 10 minute walk from the Race Village to the start line so please ensure you leave enough time to get there before the gun.

Meeting point

The Race Village is a large area. You may wish to agree a specific point with your family and friends to meet.

You may use the Athlete Meeting Point area in the Race Village which is adjacent to the Baggage & Changing Marquee. This will be signposted and is clearly marked on the map. It is split into 3 areas – A-M and N-Z (for your surname) and relay teams.

Charity presence

A number of our partner and associate charities will be located in the Race Village. If you are running for a specific charity then they will be very pleased to see you and thank you for your efforts.

Page 20: Greater Manchester Marathon: Race booklet

20

The Start1. Be at the start area in plenty of time so that you don’t

miss the gun! The start line is a walk of up to 600 metres (10 minutes) from the Race Village, so please leave time to get there.

The route from the Race Village will be clearly marked and there will be marshals to help guide you. There will be two ways to get to the start area – one for runners with a time of less than 4 hours, and one for runners with a time of more than 3 hours 30 minutes, plus the relay teams.

2. Find your Start Corral. This is a zone where people of similar estimated finish times are grouped together. These are colour coded and marked with large signs. Only go to the corral that corresponds with the letter on your race number.

3. If you are in a Brooks Pace Team, find your pace team leader. They will be on the right hand side of the road wearing a big flag on their back, with their relevant pace finish time printed on the flag.

4. Any discarded clothing will be collected once the start area is clear of runners. If you are discarding clothing, please consider your fellow runners and throw to the side of the road.

5. Your timing chip will activate as you cross the start line so please don’t worry about being near the front or that others have started the race ahead of you. Chip times will be published in the results alongside gun times.

6. Remember, don’t overestimate your pace, if you set off too fast you are very likely to struggle later in the race.

7. The race starts at 9.00am, the race starters are the legendary Ron Hill and Manchester Marathon record holder Steve Kenyon.

8. GO! – have a great race!

Relay TeamsRelay teams have been allocated the separate start area F at the back of the individual runners as you will be starting separately after the main field has set off. Please congregate at the back of the main field in area F.

The first runner in the team (runner A) will be set off at approximately 9.15am.

Do not start with the individual runners or you will be disqualified.

The other runners in the team (runners B, C, and D) will be taken by bus to the designated start areas on the route.

The relay changeover points are located as follows:

• Runner B – Sale FC, A56/Crossford Bridge, Sale

• Runner C – Timperley Sports Club, Stockport Rd

• Runner D – Manor House Public House, Sale West

It is imperative that the person wearing the runner D number completes the last leg; otherwise, you will not get a time for your team.

Transport arrangements

Buses will take members B, C & D of the team to the appropriate start area. The numbered buses will leave from Chester Road, on the west side of Warwick Rd and Sir Matt Busby Way at 9.00am.

Please ensure that you are on the right bus in good time – the buses will not wait beyond 9.00am, and no register will be taken.

There will be directional signs from the race village, and marshals will offer assistance in showing you the way.

At the end of your leg, there will be a bus to take you back to the race village. The buses will be leaving at the following times:

• Crossford Bridge, Sale bus leaves at approximately 10.00am and 10.25am

• Timperley Sports Club bus leaves at approximately 10.40am and 11.30am

• Manor House PH, Sale West bus leaves at approximately 11.15am and 12.15pm

When you return to the race village you will be able to collect your medal and finishers T shirt by entering the finish chute behind the finish arch.

There is a designated relay team meeting point in the race village so that you can meet up with the rest of the team when you get back there.

Baggage arrangements

You have a couple of options:

• Runner A give your bag to runner B to take to the changeover point

• Runner B give your bag to runner C to take to the changeover point

• Runner C give your bag to runner D to take to the changeover point

• Runner D leave your bag in the baggage tent, in your car, or with one of your spectator supporters

Alternatively, if none of you wish to have bags at the changeover points, you are more than welcome to leave bags in the baggage tent.

During Your MarathonOn the route

The route is on closed roads, and is the flattest marathon course in the UK. Mile markers will be positioned at each mile. Digital clocks (showing the GUN TIME) will be positioned at the 10km, 10 mile, halfway and 20 mile points so that you can check how you’re doing. These will also be split timing points where your time will be recorded. All digital clocks on the route and at the finish line will show the elapsed event time, from the gun start time.

Individuals’ chip times will be available via a live web link on www.greatermanchestermarathon.com

LitterWe accept that you need to discard water and bottles. In consideration for the safety of your fellow runners, please do this by dropping them at the sides of the road, where marshals and Trafford Council Waste Collection Service will be able to retrieve them. The water will be in a pouch and it is designed so that you can run with the pouch for a long period of time.

Litter Drop Zones

In an attempt to keep the route as clear as possible, we are introducing ‘Drop Zones’. These are areas where there are more robust measures in place to manage the waste. We ask you to use the drop zone area around each aid station as a consideration to other runners, and local residents. If you carry your pouch/gel/carton beyond the drop zone, please try to keep hold of it until you either reach the next drop zone or a marshal.

Wearing earphones for the raceThese are not allowed in the race. Even though this is a closed road event, you need to be aware of your fellow runners and be able to react to instructions from marshals if necessary. Anybody seen wearing earphones will be asked to remove them.

Medical supportIf you are feeling unwell in the days before the race or on the morning itself then please consider whether you are fit to run. The effort required to run a marathon is not to be underestimated and it is your responsibility to decide whether you are fit to compete.

In the event that you become unwell during the race, medical support is available along the route.

Medical staff will be positioned at some of the Water Stations, in the Race Village and at 3 refuge stations on the 2nd half of the route.

Refuge Points are indoor areas with medical personnel, hot drinks, energy provisions and buses will be based here to take you back to the race village if you pull out.

Refuge points are at miles 12, 14, 18 and 23.

If you do need medical attention during the race, and are able to, then please make your way to the next Refuge Point where someone will be able to help you and locate a first aider. If you can’t do that then try to move to the side of the road and ask a fellow runner to alert a marshal (these are placed at regular intervals) who will then summon first aid for you. Arrangements can then be made to take you back to the Race Village.

Please remember to complete the emergency contact person details on the back of your race number as this will be used if required.

Please don´t feel you have to continue because of reasons such as sponsorship money that you are raising. Your overall well-being is more important – and there is always next year!

What to do if you drop outPlease tell a marshal if you need to drop out. This is for your safety, and will save unnecessary concern from your loved ones, and the organisers. If you do need to withdraw from the race then please try and make your way to the nearest Refuge Point and we will arrange for you to be taken back to the Race Village.

If you cannot get to a Refuge Point then please inform the nearest marshal and they will then contact the control centre to make the necessary arrangements.

Refuge Points

In addition to the Water Stations we have three designated Refuge Points. There is medical support at each of these. They are supported by Greater Manchester Marathon staff and are situated in a building, with toilets and tea and coffee facilities. If you chose to use a Refuge Point you do not have to drop out of the race. You may chose to rest there for a few minutes before continuing.

If you are passing a refuge point and you are really struggling, please stop and consider whether you should continue.

Page 26: Greater Manchester Marathon: Race booklet

26

EntertainmentThe Greater Manchester Marathon is full of community spirit and has a festive atmosphere to it. There will be entertainment in the Race Village and also along the course. We hope that it will keep you going and motivated, and that spectators will enjoy it too. Besides bands and singers drawn from the local community, there will also be a number of cheering points along the route, where charities and sponsors will be out in force cheering runners on.

Keep an eye out for them all, because after the race you will have the chance to vote for the one you enjoyed the most. The event organisers are donating two £500 prizes to the local communities – one for the most popular entertainment and one for the best supporting neighbourhood as voted for by the runners. So, please try to remember who made your race the most memorable. Confirmed entertainers for the route are the following:- Gorse Hill Studios, Sale Brass Band, The Brook, Trafford Music Service, Bloom Live and Altrincham Children’s Choir.

Slower runnersWe have an agreed road closure plan in place for up to 3.00pm, giving you up to 6 hours to complete your marathon. This works out at approximately 13min40sec mile pace. If you do slow to below this pace, and the roads need to re-open, you will be asked to run as a pedestrian and observe the Highway Code.

We want you to finish the race and the marshals clearing the course will give you every encouragement to do so.

Acceptable behaviour

Each individual has the right to respect and personal dignity at the Greater Manchester Marathon. This includes runners, spectators, and the multitude of staff and groups attending this event. Insulting or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated, and anyone doing this will be asked to leave the event. If this applies to a runner, then they will be disqualified.

UK Athletics Official Rules

The Greater Manchester Marathon operates under UKA rules. A copy of which is available at http://www.uka.org.uk/EasysiteWeb/getresource.axd

The finishWell done – you´ve done it!

The finish line is at the end of Sir Matt Busby Way next to the Race Village. As you cross the line your timing chip will trigger your final finish time.

Make the most of your moment of glory, and photographers and spectators will be there to share it with you.

When you have crossed the line you will be directed through the finish chute and on into the Race Village. You will be offered a space blanket, water, a banana and receive your finishers’ medal and T shirt.

Travel by public transportRail and Metrolink Services

Train services operate to both Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria stations. Both train stations link to Metrolink.

Old Trafford Metrolink stop is on the Altrincham line. Catch the tram service for Altrincham and alight at the Old Trafford stop which is next to Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Exchange Quay Metrolink stop is on the Eccles/Media City UK line.

Taxis

Manchester United Football Stadium is 5 miles from Manchester City Centre (Piccadilly Gardens). Taxis from Manchester City Centre normally cost around £10-£15. Check before embarking on your journey.

Keep an eye out for them all, because after the race you will have the chance to vote for the one you enjoyed the most. The event organisers are donating two £500 prizes to the local communities – one for the most popular entertainment and one for the best supporting neighbourhood as voted for by the runners.
