ABID BASHIR Srinagar, Aug 11: The J&K police has formally handed over the custody of militant, who was captured alive after attack on a BSF vehicle in Udhampur recently, to the National Investigating Agency (NIA). The J&K police will however contin- ue to assist the NIA in inves- tigations, “when needed.” “We have handed over Navid formally to the NIA,” said Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra Kumar. He said the police fol- lowed the order of Jammu Sessions Court which is also known as the NIA court. “Investigating Officer of NIA had moved an appli- cation on the directions of Ministry of Home Affairs seeking custody of Navid. The gunfight had start- ed at 8 pm yesterday when militants attacked sumo vehicles, carrying army soldiers, between Nadoo and Bongaam Lajoora vil- lages. After an hour-long gun- fight last night, a police official said, the militants took advantage of dark- ness and took shelter in paddy fields in the area overnight. The forces including army’s 55 RR soldiers, Special Operations Group of J&K Police and some CRPF battalions cor- doned off Ratnipora and its adjoining areas to stop militants from escaping, the police official said. The areas sealed included Lajoora, Nadoo, Bongaam, Trich and Ratnipora. “The militants fled towards paddy fields near Ratnipora last night but could not escape as there was heavy deployment of forces in the area,” the police official said. A police official said a sumo passenger cab (JK01C-7385)—on way from Karnah to Kupwara—fell into a 500-feet deep gorge at Sadhna Top after the driver lost control over the vehicle at around 7:30 pm. All 11 passengers, including the driver, died on spot as the vehicle con- tinuously rolled down, striking with rocks, from a hilly and mountainous road, the police official said. The accident, he said, occurred near Neelam Curve on 11000-ft high Sadhna Pass, some 40 kms from Kupwara. All the deceased report- edly hail from Karnah. After the information about the accident, police teams rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies. Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Ijaz Ahmad, said though policemen from Tangdhar and Kral- pora rushed to the spot to launch the rescue opera- tion, no passenger could be saved. MUFTIS GRIEVED Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed expressed grief over the death of 11 persons in the accident. In his condolence mes- sage, the Chief Minister conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
