“TRUST”(page 1)

Worship Tip

For this week, look for songs that tell about God’s word or are verses from the Bible. Open your Bible to the Psalms and show the kids that songs are one way of worshiping, but so is pouring your heart out to God in a poem or writing your thoughts down. Express that reading the Bible is an important part of worship and that the Bible teaches what it means to worship God.

10-15MINUTES

WHAT’S THE POINT?

Trust is defined as belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of something or someone. Wow, that defines God’s trustworthiness, doesn’t it? God is reliable and always keeps His promises. God’s word is true and the source of all truth. God is able to do miracles and meet your needs. And God is the source of all power and strength. God in His perfect nature deserves your trust.

Trusting in God and His word goes beyond simply believing what He says to be true. Trust in God is shown most fully when you place your faith in Him alone for salvation through Jesus Christ. Taking that first step of faith is the beginning of trust in God.

Often as believers we trust God with our eternity but doubt Him when it comes to our day to day needs. Trusting God means depending on Him completely. What have you been holding on to yourself instead of trusting God? How does God want you to show that you trust Him today? Pray and ask God to help you trust Him more and to teach the kids in your Beach Club what it means to trust God and His word.

MEMORY LINK

Teach a Bible verse to clubbers; help them memorize the verse

Picture card (Resources)

Focus on the Bible For some of you, today will be the first time you have ever owned a Bible. It is the most popular book in the world according to sales. Yet it is also banned from many countries. Why do you think that is? (discuss) As you receive your Bible today, or if you brought your Bible from a previous year, know that having God’s word is truly a great treasure!

After kids receive their KBC Study Bibles, point out the tip-in page “About the Bible” after page 242. Talk about the differences between the Old and New Testaments. Explain how God wrote the Bible through inspired writers.

Focus on Today’s Memory Link Select 7 volunteers and give each one a picture card (Resource item). Instruct them to stand and hold the cards facing the other clubbers. Explain that some things last a long time and other things fade away quickly. Invite a volunteer to put the pictures in order according to which ones he or she thinks lasts shortest to longest. Encourage the volunteer to ask the group for help. Once the task is complete, explain that nothing lasts forever except God’s word.

Guide kids to find and read Isaiah 40:8 (page 766) in their KBC Study Bibles. Explain that while everything else will eventually fade away, the Word of the Lord stands forever. Our lesson today shows why learning Bible verses and studying the Bible are important. The more you study and learn the Bible the more trust you will have in it. Learning this verse now helps you have trust in God for years to come and remember that while everything else changes or ends, God’s word will last forever.

Option 1 - FLIP FOR TREASURE

Bible, coin

Guide kids to sit in a circle. Place one KBC Study Bible in the middle of the group. Open it to Isaiah 40:8 (page 766). Kids will take turns gently flipping the coin so it lands on the Bible. If it lands “heads up” the child who tosses will read or say the verse. If it lands “tails up” the child who tosses will select another child to read or say the verse.

Option 2 - FLOWER FADE AWAY

Live cut flowers, such as carnations

Guide each Surf Team to sit in a circle. Give a flower to each group. Talk about how the flower will eventually fade away but God’s word will stand forever. Guide the kids to pass the flower around the circle while they recite the Memory Link. The person holding the flower when the verse is complete will say a reason God’s word is a great treasure. Start the flower with a different student each time the verse is recited. Continue until all kids have a turn.

Teaching Tip

Since today is Great Treasure Day, consider having someone take video or pictures of this special day to share them with your church. Seeing children receiving Bibles in the public school is a powerful thing. With a little planning and editing you can also have a great promo video for years to come. Be sure to share your photos and video with KiDs Beach Club by emailing them to [email protected] or on social media by using hashtag #GreatTreasureDay.

BIBLE CONNECTION

Teaching today’s character word through gospel-centered Bible story

No supplies needed

Introduce the Story How many of you think of pirates when you think of treasure? In pirate movies you see ships and swords and maps to hidden treasure. The Bible is like a treasure map because it shows us the way to God and the way we should live. The Bible is also like a sword. Let’s look in the Bible to discover why.

Ephesians 6:10-13 Guide kids to open their KBC Study Bibles to Ephesians 6:10-13 (page 1291) and follow along as you read the verses aloud. Explain that these verses tell that we are in a spiritual battle every day. The devil wants to harm you but with God’s help you can stand firm and win the fight. Draw kids’ attention to “Digging In” at the bottom of page 1291. Talk about each part of the armor of God as listed. Pretend to put on each piece of armour. Ask another adult to play the role of the devil and pretend to attack you. Point out to the kids that the only defensive weapon you have is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Pick up your KBC Study Bible and use the Bible to pretend to fight back against the adult pretending to attack you. We need God’s word in order to fight against the devil. The devil leaves when you fight back by remembering verses of Scripture from the Bible, your sword of the Spirit.

Matthew 4:1-4 Did you know that Jesus used God’s Word like a sword to fight against the devil? Let’s find out what happened. Guide the kids to find Matthew 4:1-11 (page 1028) in their KBC Study Bibles. Read Matthew 4:1-3 aloud as the kids follow along. Jesus had been in the wilderness for 40 days, praying instead of eating. Imagine how tired and hungry He was! The devil knew this and tempted Jesus with food. Guide the kids read Matthew 4:4. Jesus blocked the first attack, and returned the attack by using His Sword – He remembered a verse from the Bible and used it to fight against the devil.

Matthew 4:5-7 But the devil did not give up. He said, “If I can’t tempt Jesus with food, I’ll test Him with power. If you are the Son of God, jump off the top of this temple and see if angels will come.” Satan wanted Jesus to prove He was God’s Son. Jesus used His armor to fight back - again quoting scripture. Guide the kids to read Matthew 4:7 (page 1028) to discover what Jesus said to the devil.

GREAT TREASURE DAY“TRUST”

(page 3)

Teaching Tip

When preparing an active illustration like the armor of God, don’t try to wing it. Since the illustration involves two people take a few minutes beforehand to practice the timing of when you are coming and going. Also you will want to gauge how big you go with getting attacked but not fighting back. Big is fun, but if you get the kids too amped up they might not be able to get the message behind the illustration.

If possible, bring in armor or get creative. Consider using sports equipment, toy armor, superhero accessories, even extra clothing can be used as armor. Swords can be pool noodles, yardsticks, or dowel rods. Be sure to stay focused on the main point, which is the importance of God’s Word.

10-15MINUTES

Matthew 4:8-11 There was a third attack. This time the devil tried to tempt Jesus with material things and pride. The devil took Jesus to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. He said, “You can have all this – the entire world, just bow down to me.” Guide the kids to read Matthew 4:10 to find out what Jesus said. For a third, time Jesus took the attack absorbing the blow with His armor and fought back with the Sword by quoting scripture. What happened then according to verse 11? As soon as Jesus used His sword for the third time the devil left Him alone and God sent angels to minister to Him.

Gospel Connection Jesus trusted in God’s word because He knew it has power and is the source of truth. God’s word still has power and can be trusted today. When you read the Bible, God’s Holy Spirit will reveal how you can trust Jesus to be your Savior. You can trust God to give forgiveness for sin when you turn away from your sin and turn toward God.

Lead the kids to find the tip-in section “God Loves You and Has a Plan for Your Life” (between pages 626-627). Encourage the kids to follow along as you use these pages as an outline to explain God’s plan of salvation.

We want to help you understand how you can trust Jesus and invite him into your life to be your Forever Friend. Invite children wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated area to meet with a leader one-on-one.

GREAT TREASURE DAY“TRUST”

(page 4)

Teaching Tip

Since returning children do not get another Bible, think of a way to honor them if they brought their Bible from last year. It may be a sticker that goes on the inside cover or a special bookmark. Recognizing those returning kids who already have received Bibles will make Great Treasure Day just as exciting for them, too.

Gospel Tip

Consider this illustration to help kids understand the concept of trusting Jesus alone for salvation. Using two chairs, label the first “you” and explain it represents the chair of good works and sin nature. We were all born to sit in this chair. The second chair is labeled “Jesus” and it represents the work of Jesus on the cross for our forgiveness and salvation. Sit in the first chair. Explain that saving faith, involves leaving sin and self behind and choosing to place your trust completely in Jesus. Get up and move to the second chair. Drawing this contrast, we help the kids to understand the need to stop trusting in their own good works and to transfer their trust to Jesus Christ ALONE.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today’s Bible Connection and Character Word

Memory Link Cards, Hang 10 page, index cards, pens

Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible Connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their Forever Friend. If so, let them go to the designated area.

Today’s Lesson

• What questions do you have about today’s story?

• How is God’s word a great treasure?

• Why is it so important for us to know the Bible?

• How does reading the Bible increase your trust in God?

• What temptations can you trust God’s word to help you stand against?

• How does a person trust Jesus to be their Savior and Lord?

Pray Encourage kids to write prayer requests on index cards. Lead the kids in prayer. Take the cards home and pray for kids during the week.

Lord, Thank you for Your word that gives life and shows us over and over that we can trust You. Help us understand Your word and all the truths that are found in it – like a great treasure.

Bible Exploration If time permits, help kids to find and read the following pages in their Bibles: • Find the page that says New Testament (It’s not numbered but it’s page 1021). • Find the tip-in page titled “Children in the BIble” (after page 818). • Find “temptations of Jesus” in the concordance (page 1418). • Find today’s Memory Link, Isaiah 40:8 (page 766). • Find Ephesians 6:17 (page 1292). • Find the first verse of the Bible (page 1). • Find any page that has a “Digging In” shovel on it.

Use the Bible Give each child a Memory Link card. Review today’s Memory Link and Character Word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today’s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today’s Memory Link.

Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 Page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week.

More at Home Explore your new Bible! If you want to know more about today’s story you can read it from the book of Luke, chapter 4, page 1108. Draw attention to the tip-in page “How To Use This Bible” after the front cover. Encourage kids to show their families the treasure they received today and tell them how Jesus used God’s word to stand against temptation.

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME

Game to review today’s Bible Connection & Character Word

Option 1 - MUSICAL BIBLES

KBC Study Bibles, music

Guide each surf team to sit in a circle. Give one child in each group a KBC Study Bible. When you play the music, the kids will pass the Bible around the circle. When the music stops, the Surf Team Leader will ask the child holding the Bible a review question. Continue until all questions have been asked.

Option 2 - X MARKS THE SPOT

Gold or silver plastic coins, painter’s tape, permanent marker

Use the painter’s tape to mark an X on the floor. Give each child a plastic coin. Instruct 2 children to toss their coins to the X. The child whose coin is closest to the center of the X gets a chance to answer a review question.

Alternately, guide kids to use a permanent marker to write their initials on their coins. Several kids can toss their coins on the same turn. Check the initials on the coins to see which player’s coin was closest to the middle. That child will answer a review question.

The Bible in School

Many people are misinformed about whether or not it’s legal for kids to have a Bible at school. Reassure kids that it is NOT against the law for them to have a Bible in school. Here’s what kids can LEGALLY do with their Bibles in school:

• Bring it!

• Read it in free reading time.

• Share it with a friend (during non-instructional times).

• Use it to invite a classmate to Beach Club!

The last tip-in page in the KBC Study Bible (just in front of the back cover) contains more ideas on how kids can make Jesus cool at their school.

“The grass withers, the flower fades,

but the word of our God

stands forever.”
