Great Tew School Newsletter Week 24 15 Mar, 2019 Page 1/ 5 This week we thought about the difference that we can make to others by showing them kindness and how very often these small acts of kindness can spread. The children are very quick to recognise kindness in one another - it is a quality they really value in other people. Florence and Edith certainly showed kindness and compassion by organising a cake sale and LOL-athon to raise money for Comic Relief. A huge well done to them both for raising £82 for vulnerable people both in this country and internationally. This week we thought about the difference that we can make to others by showing them kindness and how very often these small acts of kindness can spread. The children are very quick to recognise kindness in one another - it is a quality they really value in other people.

The children have shown great resilience this week when tackling fraction problems in maths and are growing in confidence and ability. Non-unit fractions no longer scare the living daylights out of the year 2 children and the year 1 children have been finding a half and quarter of an amount using lots of different resources.

We are nearing the end of our information writing based on the life of Florence Nightingale and I'm amazed every day by the litt le facts the children discover and excitedly report to me. I'm sure you will be impressed when you next see your child's topic book.

We've had some super arty afternoons this week as we're working on colour mixing skills as we work towards producing a painting of the sea. The children were so excited when they were given a pallet of mostly primary colour paints and given free reign to mix them and discover the different colours they could make. Later in the week we moved on to making different shades and tones of blue by adding white and black.

News From Years 1 & 2

It?s been a mixed bag in Reception this week. We started with the story of The Gruffalo and based our writing on it and then finished off with looking at St Patrick in readiness for Sunday. The children were able to remember some of the different parts of his story, mainly about him looking after the sheep but also that he was a good man and he ?gathered the snakes away?.

Our sound of the week was /oa/ and we?ve been practising recognising it in words and pronouncing it as/oa/ rather than as /o/ & /a/ . Never has the word goat been used so much in the classroom!

In Maths we have been taking 2 groups of objects and finding out how many there are ?altogether? by counting all the objects. We have also been doing the reverse and working out how many are left when we take some objects away from a group, either by counting the remaining objects or using a number track to count back. We?ve made a start but it would be helpful if you could practise these new skills at home when the opportunity arises. I?m sure the children will enjoy showing you what they can do.

News from Years 3 & 4Did you know that Roald Dahl was over 6' 6"? The RAF told him that he was too tall to be a fighter pilot...but he proved them wrong and fought in World War II. Roald Dahl's parents were Norwegian and named their son after the famous Norwegian Explorer Roald Amundsen. His books have sold more than 250 million copies Worldwide. These are just some of the facts that Year 3/4 learnt about Roald Dahl at his Museum at Great Missenden on Tuesday. He lived in the village for 36 years and as we walked along the High Street we saw many buildings and places that feature in his stories. The children made models of his creature The Gruncher, they wrote creative passages and made ordinary items into fantastic objects...just like Roald Dahl did!! We thoroughly enjoyed our trip.

Sport ing Hero: Ami - for always working co-operatively with others

Home Learning Hero: Arthur C - for beautifully presented home learning

Monday morning was spent filling the kitchen with fragrant spices and creating a feast for Eid. The children started off the week by following a set of instructions in the form of a recipe. We linked our cooking to topic by selecting a traditional spiced lentil soup served at the end of Ramadan during the breaking of the fast. Before we planned and wrote our own, it was important the children actually followed and evaluated a set in order to know what to include in their own. This was a very popular lesson and the queuing up for ?thirds? was a strong indicator that Year 5 and 6 enjoyed the end product!! Furthermore they were keen to take the recipe with them so we photocopied the children?s own versions and sent them home - do look out for them! You?ll notice we?ve spent a lot of time on how to apply colons and semi-colons to a list and the type of detail that?s required; they have really got to grips with this and their instructions are fantastic.

This week's Good Manners' Champion is Lily in Year 2. Lily is a very kind, caring and easy-going member of our school community. She is polite and helpful to everyone, children and adults alike, a real asset to her class. Lily is particularly good at looking at adults who speak to her, as we all saw during assembly this morning. The children wanted Lily to know: you're really bubbly - you always play with children in different year groups and you respect people; you are always kind - if someone is bossing you around you're never mean to them; if you are in the playground and you don't agree with other people's ideas, you always listen to them; you're not always trying to be in charge of friends and games in the playground; you play really nicely with my little sister Edith and you always have a lovely time together; you always keep trying hard to walk on the stilts and you don't give up, you just get on and try again. Well done Lily - it 's clear how much you are valued by the other children in school; keep up those beautiful manners!

Summer Fete - 22 June - would you like to help?

It may be only March but we?re already beginning to think about the school summer fete. The date has been set for Saturday 22 June (please save the date in your diaries) and we?re hoping to make it bigger and better than ever!

Lucy Rigg has very kindly agreed to lead the fete organisation this summer, supported by Leona Webster Edge and Sarah Heath. As ever, we?re keen to have as many volunteers as possible to help with the planning, promotion, raffle, bidding wall, ideas for activities and then to help decorate the school and run stalls on the day. If you would like to be involved, in any capacity, please email Sarah Heath ([email protected]) by 22 March. Once we know who?s able to support with the fete, we?ll arrange a meeting to get the planning underway.

Thank you!
