Situated in the heart of Africa, Uganda is the undiscovered Pearl of the continent. It hides an unparalleled variety of scenery, with exuberant tropical forests that are home to mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, mountain peaks covered in snow, elephants ambling through open savannah plains, crystal clear lakes, challenging rapids of the notorious river Nile and a melting pot of fascinating culture. Take time off and discover a lifetime of memories... Discover Uganda!

Abundant Wildlife As the sun stumbles out into the misty morning, you finish your early cup of coffee and head for the wide savannah plains. While some animals slowly wake up and stretch out in the soft sunrays, others come back from a night full of action. You will find lions relaxing in trees in Ishasha, elephants taking a mud bath in Queen Elizabeth, giraffes meandering through acacia woodland in Murchison Falls and herds of zebras grazing peacefully in Lake Mburo. Gape-mouthed crocodiles are waiting patiently and hippos dive under shyly while you enjoy a boat cruise along the shores of Lake Edward.

All our projects are initiated in close cooperation with the surrounding communities, trying to maximize the benefits that tourism can bring to the local people. Your visit will support community based initiatives, varying from the construction of schools to supply of clean drinking water. Moreover, we have entered different collaborations with local organizations, including UCOTA, Edirisa and GIFT for AID International, to deepen our involvement and contribution to responsible tourism. Of course, a cultural experience can perfectly be combined with a gorilla tracking in the rainforest or wildlife viewing in any of the national parks. Visit www.cultural-safaris.com and contact us for more information.

Practical Information

Climate Uganda has a pleasant tropical climate with small differences in season, making it a perfect destination to visit all year round. Rainfall occurs every month of the year, with a general peak in October-November and April-May, though the global climate seems to be changing. Due to its location at the equator, the fluctuation in temperature is minimal. During the day the temperature averages between 23 and 27 degrees and at night it can cool down to 15-20 degrees Celsius. Electricity The type of plug used in Uganda has three square pins, similar to the English plugs. The voltage is 240, but note that the supply can peak and drop regularly and general power failure is common. Currency and money matters The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling (Ush). US Dollars as well as Euros and Pounds can easily be changed at banks and bureaux de change in all major places. Traveler cheques are mainly accepted in Kampala at selected banks and against a less favorable exchange rate. Withdrawing money from ATM’s is currently not possible, though a few banks accept VISA credit cards. Important: US dollar notes from the year 1999 and below are not accepted! Language The official language spoken in Uganda is English. Besides, the country has more than 30 different indigenous languages, including Luganda which is mainly spoken in Kampala and surroundings. Swahili is only common in the border area with Kenya and Tanzania. Travel documents Besides a passport that should be valid for 6 months after your return, you also need a tourist visa when entering Uganda. Visas can be purchased at the embassy/consulate of your home country or upon arrival at Entebbe Airport. Safety Although Uganda has a turbulent history and suffered from war for many years, it is a safe country to visit nowadays. Most national parks are situated in the south(west) of the country and are secure to visit. Uganda Wildlife Authority exercises close supervision and protects these areas, while visitors of Bwindi National Park are always accompanied by a military escort during their activity. Unfortunately, due to the presence of the Lord Resistance Army (LRA), the situation in the north remains unstable and therefore it is not advisable to go anywhere beyond Murchison Falls National Park. In Eastern Uganda the Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon are safe to visit. For those who wish to visit Kidepo National Park we can assist in bookings for domestic flights, as traveling by car can be unpredictable.

Health Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory, just as a cholera stamp in your vaccination passport. Immunizations against DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio) and Hepatitis A are recommended as well. In addition to bringing mosquito repellent, we also advise to take malaria prevention medications. Please consult your doctor or health department for a detailed and updated advice. Road conditions The network of roads in Uganda is extensive with some good tarmac roads throughout the country. However, potholes are also very common, especially when it has rained heavily. Generally, leaving the main road means you will continue on a murram road, which vary from very poor to fair conditions. These roads can not be avoided and might cause some inconvenience during the safari. As speed has to be adjusted to the condition of the road, keep in mind that a distance of 80 km might take three hours or more. Gorilla tracking If you are interested in a mountain gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda you are required to buy a gorilla permit. Considering the fact that only eight people per day are allowed to visit a gorilla group, competition on permits is high. Of course we would be happy to assist you with booking your permit; all we need to know is the preferred date, full names, nationality and passport numbers. A certain level of fitness is not required for the gorilla tracking, though you will be refused on the tracking when you are sick. Also note that the minimum age limit for visiting the gorillas is 15 years. Please visit our website www.safari-uganda.com for more information about the gorilla tracking, rules and tips. Safari booking At the main office in Kampala, the Great Lakes Staff will be delighted to assist you in booking a safari of a lifetime! With their extensive knowledge and years of experience they will answer your questions, give advice and design an itinerary that completely suits your need and wishes. Once you confirmed the final itinerary, you will be requested to pay a deposit as a commitment to your safari and possible gorilla permits. The deposit can be made by transferring the requested AMOU
