Eyes: Night vision•Owl eye fills over half its skull•Can’t rotate eyes in socket since they are so large, can rotate head 270 degrees•Mostly rods which sense light– few cones that sense color•Mirrors reflect light in their eyes
Ears and Face• Horns aren’t ears, their
ears are under their feathers. Horns are for communication with other owls.
• Ears are offset on head for pinpoint hearing
• Face disc shape acts as radar dish and aids hearing
Feathers: Silent Flight
• Feathers adapted for speed have a smooth edge, but owl feathers have sacrificed speed for silence with “tawny” edges on the feathers, they are silent in flight to sneak up on prey.
Sharp Talons• Sharp
talons with two claws forward and two back help catch prey
Pellets: Minimize weight
• Owls digest food quickly, but not terribly efficiently, and they spit up the extra to avoid the extra weight of slowly digesting food.
