In your introduction paragraph, CONTRAST Great Expectations to Macbeth by stating the following

• When the novel was written• A brief summary of the story (max 2 sentences)• How a typical 19th Century reader would have reacted to the story• What was Dickens’ social purpose in writing the story?

1. Summarise the way in which Magwitch changes during the novel (do NOT simply say ‘he starts bad and ends good’: the characterisation of Magwich is FAR more subtle and nuanced than this)

2. What is Dickens telling the reader about Social Class? Parents and Children? Money? Human Nature? Life and Death? Does the reader learn anything

3. Summarise the way in which Macbeth changes during the play (again ‘he changes from ‘good’ to ‘bad’ is not deep enough)

4. What is Shakespeare telling the audience about Power? Ambition? Society? Human Nature? Life and Death? Does the audience learn anything?

5. How does Shakespeare’s portrayal of Macbeth compare/ contrast with Dickens’ portrayal of Magwitch? Are there any similarities/ differences?
