hether it’s Facebook, a website or a magazine, lists are showing up every-

where in today’s world. In fact, they are so ubiquitous that there’s now even

a word applied to themed or topical content when it’s presented in a list-type

format. Such content is called a “listicle.”

In a salute to this popular trend, and with credit to Nielsen Research and PBS Development

Services data where indicated, here’s a listicle from our Development Department.

The Top 10 reasons to sponsor a television program on Vegas PBS:

10. KLVX Channel 10 and PBS KIDS channels are the most popular local daytime viewing

channels for households with children under the age of 11. And it’s not just the kids who are

watching. In almost 70 percent of these households, adult

caregivers are watching with them. Sponsorships on these

channels catch their attention by supporting program-

ming they particularly value and appreciate. It’s the per-

fect place for messaging to young households. (Nielsen

Research, 2018)

9. Nevada Week, Outdoor Nevada and Varsity Quiz are

a few examples of content a viewer won’t find anywhere

else. Sponsors are appreciated and remembered because

of our commitment to such special programming.

8. Because that unique local programming is so highly

valued, our sponsors actually are perceived as providing an important community service,

reflecting a commitment to our local quality of life and elevating the impact of their mes-

sages. (PBS Sponsorship Study, 2015)

7. Our evening program lineup reaches an audience that tends to be active and engaged in

its community, making it the right time and place for many sponsor messages that want to

make a truly “local” statement. (Nielsen Research, 2018)

6. Viewers watch Vegas PBS attentively. For our viewers, the television set is rarely “just

on in the background.” This means effective sponsor exposure to our audience.

5. Our viewers appreciate that we run far fewer sponsor messages per hour than commer-

cial stations do, and that we never break into programming for an announcement. Less mes-

saging “clutter” leads to higher retention rates for the messages we do air.

4. Viewers are especially loyal to our sponsors. When other criteria are equal, our viewers

prefer to buy goods or a service from Vegas PBS sponsors. (PBS Sponsorship Study, 2015)

3. We have a policy of “category exclusivity.” Individuals, organizations or companies that

sponsor one of our programs won’t bump into another sponsor from their industry or share

sponsor credit with another individual or family.

2. Our corporate sponsors are seen as trustworthy industry leaders. An association with us

reflects in an unusually positive way on our supporters. (PBS Sponsorship Study, 2015)

1. It’s the right thing to do.

Whatever your reason, we will of course welcome the support.

Nat King Cole’s GreatestSongs (My Music)Friday, March 8 at 8:30 p.m.The My Music series proudly presents a centennial celebration of the im-

mortal Nat King Cole — born March 17, 1919 — with the first-ever special

to present full performances of his greatest hits and cherished standards.

The elegance, warmth and beauty of Cole’s voice is unmatched in the his-

tory of popular music. Classic ballads such as “Mona Lisa,” “Unforgettable”

and “When I Fall in Love” are among the most passionate love songs ever

recorded. Rarely seen footage from his groundbreaking 1950s variety show

and long-lost promotional films paint a nostalgic portrait of an impeccable

and timeless artist. Also scheduled Saturday, March 2 at 6 p.m.

Victoria Season 3 on Masterpiece(Season Finale)Sunday, March 3 at 9 p.m.In the season finale of this phenomenal drama, London is buzzing with

excitement over the Great Exhibition, held inside an enormous structure

of iron and glass known as the Crystal Palace. Albert recognized the

value of organizing a massive trade show that would place Britain at

the forefront of technology by displaying its latest inventions. Nothing

like the Crystal Palace had ever been built, and skeptics predicted that

wind or vibration would cause the colossal structure to collapse. Now

the world’s eyes are on the Great Exhibition — and the Royal couple.

Does triumph or failure beckon?

Misérables” is coming to Vegas PBS this April in an enthralling six-part

miniseries. The blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life

in award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of

the story of loss and redemption. Dominic West (“The Affair,” “The Wire”)

stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David

Oyelowo (“Selma,” “Small Island”) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Join

us for a sneak peak of this stunning new series as we look forward to the

April premiere. Original broadcast on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.

anecdotes about the actors and notable personalities he’s worked with, sto-

ries gleaned from his research, heartwarming and heartbreaking moments

with the scores of experts and everyday people he’s interviewed over the

FRONTLINE: The Trial of Ratko Mladic Tuesday, March 19 at 9 p.m.In the siege of Sarajevo by Bosnian Serb forces in

the 1990s, more than 10,000 people died. In

the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, more than 7,000

Muslim men and boys were killed. Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic stood

accused of masterminding those operations and many others during the Bos-

nian War. He was found guilty by the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal and

sentenced to life in prison. This special takes you inside the war crimes trial,

with coverage of the prosecution lawyers and witnesses who testify about

what they experienced — but, uniquely, also the defense lawyers and Mladic’s

supporters. The documentary deals with the worst of humanity, but there is a

glimmer of light that comes as witnesses come forward to establish the truth

of what happened.

T H I S W E E K ’ S P I C K S

Thursdays at 8 p.m. beginning March 21This month, we bring you an all-new British crime drama featuring two odd-

ball investigators. Frank is a talented but decidedly grumpy detective. Lu is an

ex-hairdresser with masses of charm and a keen sense of trouble. Frank needs

a partner. He just doesn’t know it yet. The two eventually join forces and form

a highly unlikely and hugely entertaining detecting duo. Frank and Lu quickly

discover that all is not as peaceful as it seems in their pretty theatre town.

The mayor is murdered, vengeful lovers stalk the streets and a magician’s

trick fatally misfires. Welcome to the birthplace of the Bard — where fact is

stranger than fiction and low-life criminals

Great Decisions in Foreign Policy

T H I S W E E K ’ S P I C K S

Great Performances: Julius CaesarFriday, March 29 at 9 p.m.Set in a women’s prison, this special offers a powerful dramatization of

the catastrophic consequences of a political leader’s extension of power

beyond constitutional confines through an all-female lens. The cast stars

Tony Award®-nominee Harriet Walter (“Sense and Sensibility”) as Brutus;

Jackie Clune (“Borderline”) as Caesar; Martina Laird (“EastEnders”) as

Cassius; and Jade Anouka (“Cleaning Up”) as Mark Antony. The women play

male inmates and guards: Brutus wrestles with his moral conscience over

the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony manipulates the crowd

with subtle and incendiary rhetoric to create frenzied mob violence. Per-

formed in-the-round and enhanced by a guerilla filming style on a mostly

bare stage, the performance creates a unique perspective on Shakespeare’s

famous discourse on power, loyalty and tragic idealism.

and 26 at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.This acclaimed documentary series returns with powerful stories of women’s

role in dramatic conflicts and peace settlements across the globe. Women

play a central role in ending conflicts and building peace, but their stories are

often left untold. An all-female cast of directors present four never-before-

told stories about the women who risked their lives for peace, changing

history in the process: Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs (Eimhear O’Neill), Naila

and the Uprising (Julia Bacha), A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers

(Geeta Gandbhir and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) and The Trials of Spring (Gini

Reticker). Taking place in Ireland, Gaza, Haiti and Egypt, the series reveals

their transformative power and the long road ahead for contemporary peace-

builders around the world. See page 20 for details.

The Power of Radical Kindness with Angela SantomeroSunday, March 10 at 8 a.m.

Angela Santomero is the beloved creator of “Blues Clues” and “Daniel Tiger’s Neighbor-hood” and protégé of Fred Rogers. In this spe-cial she explores the importance of kindness and how it can lead to a more fulfilled, happy, healthy and successful life. Angela contends that kindness is the key to recognizing oth-

ers — and ourselves — as worthy of love and understanding. Much like gratitude, we need a kindness practice — a practice in which we learn to see with our hearts and act from a place of compassion. As the Dalai Lama says, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always pos-sible.” Through practicing radical kindness —

toward ourselves and others — we can trans-form ourselves, our neighborhood and our world for the better.

Two for the Road

Retire Safe and Secure with Ed SlottSunday, March 17 at 7:30 a.m.

America needs Ed Slott now more than ever! Congress has just upended 30+ years of the tax code. What does it all mean for you and your family? And more importantly, how can you protect your hard-earned savings? This dynamic program was shot in front of an en-thusiastic audience of 700. As he’s done in all

of his hit pledge specials, Ed combines a vast in-depth knowledge of retirement tax rules with his legendary humor, “…so you know that Uncle Sam isn’t your real uncle, don’t you?” Ed Slott makes talking about taxes fun, and how to develop YOUR plan, not the govern-ment’s plan. As Ed always says, “It’s not how

Lola Upside Down Tuesdays at 6 p.m. This dark tale of small-town life has been called Finland's answer to “Twin

Peaks.” Patriarchy rules the small town Flatnäs. Wealth and power are gathered

in a few hands and the citizens are to obey the unspoken rules of the mighty men

in town. Living there are a collection of poets and dreamers, miscreants and rest-

less young people. In this surreal coming-of-age story, a group of teenaged girls

wrestle with friendships and identity. The series is based on the novel by Monika

Fagerholm. In Finnish with English subtitles.

Cancer: The Emperor of All MaladiesMondays at 8 p.m. beginning March 11

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Siddhartha Mukherjee, this three-part series

tells the complete story of cancer, from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll

to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. The story of cancer is a story

of human ingenuity, resilience and perseverance but also of hubris, paternalism and mis-

perception. It is a scientific story, but also a deeply human one: of doctors, researchers

and especially patients who — through courage, suffering and occasional hubris — pushed

the boundaries of knowledge. Executive producer Ken Burns interweaves a sweeping his-

torical narrative; with intimate stories about contemporary patients; and an investigation

into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, to the brink

of lasting cures.

Independent Lens: People’s Republicof DesireSunday, March 3 at 9 p.m. Disturbing and provocative, this specialexplores the strange world of China’s live-streaming “showrooms,” where the mostpopular stars can earn hundreds of thou-sands of dollars a month from adoring fanswho “tip” them with “digital gifts” paid forwith actual cash. Live-streaming has found arapid – and rabid – following in China whereover 422 million viewers watch ordinary peo-ple-turned-celebrities as they sing, eat, danceor talk. But have these virtual relationshipsreplaced actual one-on-one connections? Thefilm focuses on two of the most popularonline stars: Shen Man, a nurse-turned-singer, and Big Li, an online comedian willingto risk almost anything to keep his famealive. Adored and supported by free-spendingnouveau riche and poor migrant workers, these stars are brought together in a seriesof online idol competitions, where they dis-cover that happiness in their virtual worldmay be as elusive as in the real one.

WhyWe SupportVegas PBS...

We support Vegas PBS because we value educa-tion.

Challenger is a private school offering preschoolthrough eighth grade.

We teach children to find joy and self-worththrough achievement. We also teach them tobecome self-reliant and independent in theirthinking and actions. These are parts of ourmission and part of the end we have in mindwhen teaching our students.

Challenger School values its own independence, too. We protect it by not accepting any govern-ment money and the intrusion that comes withit. We use our own curriculum and methods.

We are pleased to sponsor children's program-ming because PBS viewers value education.
