GRE SYLLABI for Manual 7.0

The syllabi on the following pages list the math and verbal assignments for each class. Your homework assignments depend on your current math and verbal scores. Be sure to read the section below, How to Use These Syllabi, before doing your first assignment. Your teacher can answer any questions that you might have about which assignment to complete.

All assignments are located in the corresponding class folders in the GRE Online Content of the Student Portal. You should have received an email from your local Princeton Review office with instructions for accessing the online content.

Types of Assignments Classes 1 through 8

Each class folder contains 3 subsets of folders:

Prework consists of Required lessons and drills to be completed before class. These drills and lessons prepare you for the material that will be covered in the upcoming class, so it’s very important that you complete them before class. Prework also contains Skill Building drills. These are there for you to practice the concepts introduced in the required lessons. If you are comfortable with the pre-work concepts, you can skip these drills. If you do not get 100% of the required drills correct, use the skill building drills for more practice. Note that some classes do not have a Prework assignment.

Makeup Lessons are a series of recorded lessons and drills that match the in-class content of each classroom session. If you must miss a class, you can view the material that was covered in class in the corresponding Makeup Lesson. Note that all classes move at their own pace and may run ahead of or behind the syllabus; consequently, consult your teacher first if you miss a class. You can also use the Makeup Lessons to review any material that you are still struggling with that was already covered in class.

Homework contains a mix of Required and Skill Building Drills. Most homework is

Required. These drills provide you with additional practice for the topics covered in the

classroom session—they reinforce the techniques learned in class. Completing these

drills is crucial to improving your score and is also necessary for your course guarantee.

How to Use These Syllabi

For each class, there are 2 versions of the math syllabus and 2 versions of the verbal syllabus. You should complete the math version that corresponds to your current math score from your most recent practice test. Accordingly, you should complete the verbal version that corresponds to your current verbal score from your most recent practice test. While it might be tempting to do homework based on the score you’d like to get, it’s better to use your current score. Results typically come in stages so you’ll want to use the homework to build your skills and master the techniques. As your score increases, the syllabus will direct you to questions that will help you to make further improvements.

For each version of the syllabus, the homework is divided into two sections: Essentials and Supplemental. This division of the homework will help you to prioritize your study time. Typically, you’ll want to complete the entire assignment before your next class. If you’re facing a rough week, however, and have limited study time, do the Essentials. But remember—doing the entire assignment will result in a better score improvement.

Here’s what you’ll find in each section:

Essentials. This part of the assignment represents the minimum that you need to do to get ready for your next class (Prework) and to review what you have learned in that class (Homework). If you do the Essentials, you won’t fall behind. The Essentials will always include the required Prework assignment, if there is one, as well as the required homework assignment for each topic that was covered in your class. Completing the Essentials is your first priority when you do your homework.

Supplementary. Want more? The supplementary part of the assignment helps you to further refine your understanding of GRE concepts and problems. In this section, you’ll find additional lessons and drill assignments from the Skill Building folders as well as the Supplemental Materials folder. While the problems assigned in the Essentials homework section test material that you just covered in your previous class, Supplemental Materials problems also test material from previous lessons. Doing problems that test material from previous lessons will help you to refine and master skills from those lessons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which version should I use if I haven’t taken a practice test?

Well, take a practice test! Taking practice tests allows you to track your improvements and your weaknesses. You can’t address your weaknesses if you don’t know what they are. However, if you haven’t taken a practice test, you should assume that your math and verbal scores are each a 151 or lower unless you have good reasons to believe your scores are higher. Good reasons include things such as your typical performance on other standardized tests and past GRE results.

What if one of my later scores is lower than one of my earlier scores?

Be sure to speak with your instructor so that the two of you can determine what happened. As for the syllabus, you can continue to use the syllabus that goes with the higher score.

What if I think my first practice tests results may be too low?

There could be reasons why your first practice test results are too low. For example, if you were sick when you took your first test, your results might have been affected. Other factors that could cause a low score include interruptions during your test and noisy testing environments. However, the practice tests are generally reliable indicators of your score. So, you typically want to use the syllabus that goes with your current score.

What if I’m still not sure?

Consult your instructor—that’s why we’ve staffed your class with a thoroughly trained, knowledgeable expert.

How to Make the Most of Your Study Time

Create a dedicated homework schedule. There is a direct correlation between the amount of work you put into the course (attending all classes, completing all tests and drills) and the amount of score improvement. More time = more points. Your score is in your hands; therefore, develop a weekly schedule that will ensure that you have time to complete all assignments.

Do a little each day. It’s better to do a little homework each day than a lot of homework on one day! If you try to do all of your homework in one day, you might feel overwhelmed and you’ll probably find yourself doing the problems just to get them done. You want to learn something from the questions. Plus, if you wait until a few days after your class to start your homework, you may find that you’ve forgotten some of the approaches that you learned in class. If you do a little bit of homework each day in manageable chunks of time, you’ll find it easier to master the skills tested on the GRE.

If you start to zone out, take a break. When you start to find yourself focusing more on just getting the answer than how to get to the answer, it’s time to take a break. To improve your GRE score, you need to identify and fix your weaknesses. You can’t do that effectively if you’re not paying attention to how you approach the question.

Practice the techniques. The methods that you learn in class have helped tens of thousands of GRE students improve their scores. Some of these methods will seem strange at first. And, in many cases, they may seem more time consuming. That’s normal. As you get more comfortable with the techniques, you’ll find that both your accuracy and your speed will increase.

Learn to guess. Most test takers need to guess a few times when they take the GRE. Learning how to guess effectively can give a real boost to your score. Practice your elimination skills. If you can’t find the right answer, look for wrong answers to eliminate. Your teacher will help you to learn how to identify wrong answers for each type of question and make educated guesses.

Keep track of the questions that give you trouble. Your teacher will set aside some time in each class to discuss homework questions. Keep a list of the troublesome questions so that you can ask your teacher about them in class. You should include questions that you don’t understand even with the explanation, questions that you got right because of a guess, and questions that you got right but want to know if there is an easier way.

Practice Test Schedule at a Glance

It’s important to take practice tests as you progress through your course. Your GRE Student Portal includes access to 7 full-length practice tests. These tests simulate the actual exam and are adaptive by section. We ask that you take 5 tests during your course. These tests are found in the Core Tests folder. If you wish to take the other 2 tests, you can find those in the Supplemental Tests folder.

This chart shows when you should take your five practice tests and your goals for each test.

Test Taking Tips for the Practice Tests

To get the most out of your practice tests, you should try to simulate the actual testing environment as closely as possible. Here are some tips for making your practice test experience as much like the conditions of taking the real GRE.

o Take the test when you are well rested and well-fed. For the real GRE, you’ll likely try to get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious meal beforehand. If you take your practice tests after a long day at work or school on an empty stomach, it will affect your score.

o Take the test under test center conditions. While it may be tempting to take your laptop to the nearest coffee shop so that there are plenty of caffeinated beverages and snacks to choose from, you’ll likely also be distracted by the noisy environment. So, take your test in a quiet location and limit distractions. If you are testing at home, turn off your cell phone, don’t check your email and log off of Facebook! As for the snacks and beverages, well, you aren’t allowed to bring those into the testing room at the real exam anyway.

o Take the test all at once. While you can suspend a practice test and resume it later, we don’t recommend doing so. After all, you can’t suspend the real GRE and come back to it the following day. Whenever possible, take the practice tests in one sitting (and don’t skip the essays!). It will help you to become acclimated to the demands of a nearly 4 hour exam.

o Have the appropriate supplies. Set yourself up with a supply of scratch paper and several pencils. That’s what you’ll be using during the actual exam, so that’s what you should use for your practice tests. Use the on-screen calculator for any time consuming math calculations. Personal calculators are not allowed in the test center; therefore, don’t use a personal calculator for the practice tests—get used to using the on-screen calculator.

o Don’t focus on your score. Work for accuracy and focus on applying the techniques learned in class.

Remember: if you want to CHANGE your score, you have to CHANGE the way you take the test. Master the techniques.

After Class 8

Before taking your actual GRE, here are some things to do:

Draw up a study plan to make effective use of the remaining time between the end of

your course and your test date.

Finish any online drills that you were assigned but did not complete.

Complete Powerprep® II Tests 1 or 2 or both. Go to www.gre.com to download the tests.

Most students like to use these tests as midterm and final exams.

Review your practice tests and try answering the questions that you got wrong the first

time to determine whether you can answer them correctly now to ensure that you have

learned from your previous mistakes.

Analyze your practice test results and try to identify your two biggest math weaknesses.

Address these areas by reviewing your class notes and strategies in the manual as well

as doing targeted practice questions from the online drills.
