GRE Issue 1: As People Rely More And More On Technology - With A Free
Essay Review
As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of
humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in
which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement
and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement
might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your
position.
In the era of advanced technology, technology has undoubtedly changed the
way people live. With the use of calculators, people gradually get rid of mental
arithmetic. Due to this fact, some people argue that the ability of humans to
think for themselves will undoubtedly decline. This is because when relying
excessively on instruments, people may hardly figure out the right number
without calculators if the calculation becomes somewhat complicated.
Admittedly, it is true that humans ability of calculation might diminish to some
extent. However, technology decidedly facilitates humans to think deeply for
themselves through freeing them from trivial things. This is an indisputable fact
that with versatile and state-of-the-art computers, especially mainframe,
scientists no longer take pains to deal with complex and numerous formulas.
Therefore, these talented scientists can spend their time and energy in doing
more meaningful things by avoiding being bogged down with trivial
computations. For instance, engineers who major in aerodynamics, can use thelatest computers to simulate how the attitude of airplane will change with
respect to different levels of wind. Thus, due to the assistance of modern
instruments, these engineers can focus more on how to design planes to fly
more safely and efficiently.
In contrast to the statement, we can see that people begin involving themselves
in some more complex problems that did not occur in the past, which motivates
humans to think assiduously for themselves. By utilizing technology, forexample, people build large dams to store the water as well as preventing
-

devastating floods. However, this approach also has led to consequences people
never thought of. The Three Gorges Dam in China is an excellent instance of
this point. After construction of this huge and marvelous dam, some
unpremeditated problems emerged, such as undue fluctuations in temperature in
local areas and sediments and silt deposited excessively under on the bottom of
the Yellow River. As a result, this phenomenon forced experts in China to
contemplate whether altering the local topography might negatively influence
climate and to what extent. Therefore, humans ability to think for themselves
has improved rather than deteriorated
In addition, technology also inevitably leads humanity to think of moral
questions that did not appear in the past. One of the most profound and
contentious moral questions is cloning. While cloning will definitely help sick
people with deteriorating organs by cloning new ones, this technology is also
likely to raise a debate of whether cloning is illicit or not. Will cloning finally
crumple up our established morality, or must scientists stop doing research on
cloning even if the advantages of cloning far exceed the disadvantages arising
from this advanced technology? By answering these controversial questions,
we, human race, are unquestionably engaged in thinking for ourselves.
All the evidence put forward supports an unshakable conclusion that although
some human abilities, such as computation, are slightly worse because of
reliance on calculators, the ability of thinking is expected to improve rather than
deteriorate. On one hand, people, especially sophisticated scientists, will have
more time to focus on significant as well as knotty problems. On the other hand,
new questions that pop up appear as a result of technology involve humans in
more profound contemplation.

To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study
its major cities.
Societies and cultures are what we as human being always strive to
dissect to shed lights on how and why we are the way we are. But how do we do
this? Is there a systematicapproach to such an elusive terminology as
characteristics of a society? Arguably, a generalization approach of studying
its major cities could be used but with precautions.
What makes up a society? It is often used to refer to a collective body of human
beings in a predefined realm, which in this case will be classifiedas a country.
People in a country normally do not live clustered in an area but rather, scattered around though still grouped into what we called cities. It is in
these big, major cities that the majority of people gather to live. If society is a
collective body of people then the characteristicsof a society should be the
characteristics of the people it is made of. When a thorough study cannot be
made throughout the whole country, it might be suffice to study a statistically
significant number of people in order to make an assumption. If we keep in
mind the survival of the fittest theory, big cities can sustain and prosper because
it has certain values and characteristics that prevail and pervade. These
characteristics of big cities are what we are looking for incharacteristicsof a
society.
Promising though it may sound, this method is still a generalization and with all
generalization, howeverstatistically sound it can be, there are rooms for
mistakes. To minimize this problem, a number of criteria should be satisfied
before any study can be taken seriously. For example the cities studied must
make up a significant part of the country in terms of population and be
prominent in other social aspects. The people in the cities being studied must be
representative of all classes of people, etc. There will be objections and criticisms but it is important to keep in mind that
on issues like this, we can never get to an absolute truth. Attempts to arrive at
anything below the truth should actually belauded.

Stance. Educational institutions should dissaude student from studying fields he
won't likely to succeed in.
Education is a broad topic, one that means career preparation for some, and
means exploration of new ideas and opening of the mind to others. Choosing the
right education is important to success, making the education industry one of
the largest in the country, and also one of the areas that have continuously
grown even throughout times of recent times of recession. It is a given that
educational institutions should provide their students with means to success.
They use their resources to train and to education students to reach their highest
potentials. So if an education institution, through its high level of experience
with various types of students and with its knowledge of professional fields,
finds that a student is unsuited to his pursuited field of study, then it should
dissuade the student from that particular field.
Of course, some might argue that educational instituions have no right to
do persuade or dissuade students about their futures. After all, the idea ofsuccess is different to each person. Success can mean financial stability, a
creative life, or the ability to be of service. What right do institutions have to
decide success for a student? And how exactly can educational institutions
know how to judge a student? Michael Jordan's high school coach considered
him a horrible basketball player and failed him during tryouts. Students havehidden potential and no judge is perfect.
Yet looking at the first argument, though the idea of success is different toeach person, a basic tenet of success is satisfaction of a certain level of financial
freedom and of contributing to society. If an educational institute sees that astudent might have trouble fulfilling this basic need, then it should inform the
student of other choices he has in his careeer. Also, though not all judges are
perfect in their perceptions of their subjects, if a student has passion and the
drive to succeed in his given field, then no amount of criticism will stop him.
Michael Jordan would have become the number one basketball player whether
or not his coach dissuaded him. In fact, perhaps because of this dissuasion he
might have tried harder. If someone truly wants to do something, then he won'tbe affected by dissuasion from others. If, on the other hand, a person is timid
about his future and uncertain, then a little guidance might be of great help.
An important reason why educational instituions should help their studentsdecide their courses of study is that they have the most knowledge of the real
world of job prospects and cases of successful students. They have access to
research, to past students, and to companies and organizations throughout the
committee. They have a more accurate view of the real world of professional
jobs. The student, on the other hand, though not in all cases, will most likely be
less knowledgeable of the current world than the educational institution. The
-

6/41
student will probably be younger and therefore have less experience with
careers and jobs, more likely to make decisions on faulty assumptions or on
misevaluations of himself. Many students prepare for medical school by taking
pre-med during their undergraduate years, their basis for preparation being
vague dreams of being doctors or pressure from parents. However, if a student'scapabilities are not toward the medical sciences, they should be afforded theresources to decipher this, if not actual counseling as to better career choices.
Educational institutions should also prevent students from spending unnecessary
time and money in a field they cannot succeed in. Costs of college are
increasing every year, with graduate school becoming the norm. If students are
investing so much of their time and money into an educational institute, that
institute has a responsibility not to just provide them with a diploma but also to
prepare them for their careers. There are pre-med students who spend years
trying to get into med school, only to be rejected by the colleges that advisedthem during admissions. There are also colleges that are considered diploma
mills by knowledgeable professionals, who accept students based on theirability to pay tuition, and who roll out diplomas and graduate students without
taking responsibility for their futures.
Because educational institutions have the most resources, connections, and
knowledge, and because their students are investing important time and moneyinto them, they must take responsibility toward their students by making sure
they enter fields they can succeed in. If a student's characteristics prove he
cannot be successful in his chosen field, the institution must provide him with
the realisitic reasons why he is not suited and show him a better course of study

Scandals Are Useful Because They Focus Our Attention On Problems In Ways
That No Speaker Or Reformer Ever Could. - With Free Essay Review
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or
disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to
address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to
challenge your position.
Scandals sometimes can catch publics attention, and shed light on some issues
that may be controversial and worth attention. However, I disagree with thestatement that scandals can focus peoples attention on problems in ways that no
speaker and reformer ever could, because it is possible that some speakers and
reformers can focus publics attention effectively just like scandals do, and
scandals may not always focus publics attention in a useful way.
To begin with, I agree that under some circumstances scandals can focus our
attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Scandals
sometimes make people curious, and encourage the public to look for the wholestory of an issue. Scandals can also raise pressure on governments, and force
them to address certain problems. In addition, scandals can direct publics
attention to issues that some people are trying to dissemble or unwilling to
reveal. For instance, especially in a society ruled by autocracy, or where the
public does not have the right to speak freely, scandals can direct publics
attention on problems that people are not allowed to discuss in public, and when
it is risky for any speaker to speak in public. It is possible that scandals can
place pressure on the government, and then the issue can be addressed in orderto placate the public. In this case, scandals are useful since it directs publics
attention on problems that no speaker or reformer ever could.
However, this is not always the case. In domestic countries such as the US,
where people have the right to speak freely, it is possible that some speakers or
reformers can focus our attention on problems in ways that scandals can. For
instance, Martin Luther King succeeded in focusing the publics attention on the
issue of segregation, and unequal right for black people. He gave speeches inpublic, and advocated people to protest against segregation. Finally, he
-
7/29/2019 GRE Issue Essays
8/41
successfully directed peoples attention on segregation, and forced that country
to amend the unjustifiable laws. Therefore, I think it is possible that some
outstanding reformers and speaker can focus peoples attention in a society
where people have right to speak.
In addition, even although scandals may focus publics attention on some
problems, it is not always useful. Sometimes, scandals tend to focus on some
trivial or unrelated issues about celebrities in ways that can mislead the public.
For instance, we have heard many sexual scandals about many politicians, in
some cases, these politicians may be competent in public office and good
leaders, but people may start to distrust them or deny their abilities because of
their misbehaviors in their personal life. In addition, we may hear some scandals
like some politicians are alcoholic or rude to their friends, and these scandals
can tarnish their images, and exaggerate the problems, which can possibly
mislead the public, and ignore their contributions and talents. In this case,
scandals are not always useful.
Overall, I think under some circumstances, scandals can focus our attention on
problems no speaker or reformer can. However, it is not absolute. I disagree
with the statement that scandals can focus peoples attention on problems in
ways that no speaker and reformer ever could. Further, scandals may not always
useful.

Essay topic:
Claim: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial
support they need in order to thrive.
Reason: It is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved
and generated.
The author concludes that the major cities should get more financial support
because the cultural traditions are preserved and generated in these
metropolises. However, personally, small villages may maintain more
traditional factors. The support to culture protection should be combined in
major cities and small villages. Furthermore, the spirits and other invisible
aspects in cultural are also crucial to culture protection.
To begin with, some culture factors in big cities are hard and expensive to be
maintained. However, in small villages, the cost to culture maintenance will be
considerable lower than in the big cities. For instance, all the hoary architecture
need work in maintenance. In huge cities, the worker employee fees are higher
and the real estate value are far more higher than small villages. Except for the
economic considerations, the rare places in major cities may be used for better
benefits, such as hospitals, schools and so on. Taking the large numbers of
people in metropolis into consideration, these infrastructures may be morepractical and exigent for residents. Therefore, when the same traditional
buildings exist in huge cities and small villages, the culture protection in small
villages maybe more economical and advisable.
From another perspective, more cultural factors may be remained in villages
than in cities. The cities are more vulnerable in battles than villages. The
complex politic turmoil, often happened in huge cities, also has negative
influences on the culture protection. In small villages, the calm and steady lifestyle are better for culture protection. Some old architectures remain only
damaged structure, due to the war. For instance, the temple in Athens, and the
old summer palace in Beijing. However, in small villages, some old structures
can avoid the war damage.
Furthermore, more traditional factors, such as poetry, literature, and ballad, are
inherited invisible, regardless of the area difference. These intangible factors are
maintained in small villages easier than in cities, since the life style in hugecities are influenced by modern technology productions. For example, the
-

popular music concert may replace the Shakespeares poetry in cities. The
novels, like Harry Potter, may replace the Bible story in childrens hands. The
fast food and set meal may replace the traditional food in most cases. However,
in villages, the music concert is often few, and traditional stories may be talkmore, so that the old value and spirits may be inherited more in villages than in
cities. The protection for these things doesnt need much financial support, but
education and propagation.
To sum up, both cities and villages have some kind of unique factor on cultural
tradition. Small cities may contain more old culture factors in some aspects, and
the invisible things need more attention and should be educated to next
generation. The financial support may not that important comparing with the
invisible propagation. In conclusion, if financial and other methods support are
applied to cultural protection, the excellent tradition will be inherited for long.

A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum
until they enter college.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree
with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take.
In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in
which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and
explain how these examples shape your position.
The author claims that every nation should mandate a common curriculum for
students until they join college.Every student should be given equal opportunity
for education and also their performance should be fairly judged based on a
common criteria.
The proposal for a similar curriculum for all students will be beneficial in terms
of evaluating individual performances of each student in a just manner. As
students of each grade throughout the nation will be studying the same subjects
in their academic courses,it will result in a fair evaluation of their
performance. Most of the institutions choose subjects for their students
independently without consulting other institutions or having a discussion on
the subjects which should be included in the curriculum.Such disparity result instudents in different institutions learning subjects which are not similar, and
therefore not a equitable evaluation of each student's performance.A national
curriculum will obviate this partiality towards students who scored well due to
easy courses.
Further,it will also provide students equal opportunity of studying subjects
which otherwise would not have been part of their curriculum. As courses for
each grade differ on institutional basis, some students are disbarred from courseswhich otherwise could be beneficial for their future. For example, consider a
student who has the talent for arts, but due to no course related to arts being
provided in his institution is denied the opportunity of exploring or growing his
skill.A similar curriculum will mandate courses which are benefical for each
student's development and at the same time provide each of them with equal
opportunity of studying those courses.
However,a common curriculum could also hamper a student's growth byrestraining him to courses which does not include his choice of subject. For

example,a student who wants to learn music, but due to a nation curriculum
enforced in his academic course,he will not able to learn subjects which are not
included in the study, but are favourable to his future growth.A mandatory
curriculum could turn out to be unfair in terms of not including courses whichstudents could have the predilection for learning. But this injustice towards
students could be avoided by including elective courses which student can
choose based on their skill.
In sum,a national curriculum is beneficial for students,so that no student is
unfairly judged and each student avails to the benefiits of a holistic academic
learning.

Some people believe that government funding of the arts is necessary to ensure
that the arts can flourish and be available to all people. Others believe that
government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts.
Arts depict the characteristics of a civilization and society, so, the preservation
of allthe art forms isof utmost importance. Government can help in preserving
the integrity of arts by funding and subsidizing art related works.
Arts are mostly non-profitable endeavors. Proper financial support to arts will
ensure that, artist are able to develop their artistic skills and they get a proper
platform for exhibiting their skills without any hardships.
In developing and under-developed countries, the scarcity of financial support
hinders the proliferation of arts. The artists are forced to choose alternative
career options in which they can afford a standard of living. Such a scenario has
a detrimental effect on the arts of a civilization. If the government provides anadequate financial support and encouragement, then the younger generations
shall be able to find career options in arts.In most of the countries, museums and art galleries are funded by the
government because they are subjects of national importance, likewise a
particular skill set which develops an unique art forms such as plays, paintings,
or music is of national importance and must be preserved.
On the other hand, the government funding of the arts may threaten the integrityof arts, if the funding is prejudiced to some particular fields or subjects of arts.
In Soviet Union era, government encouraged only those areas of arts whichaligned to their political motives. This biased support led to ignorance of other
areas of arts which did not developed in that era. In some countries, a particular
forms of drawing or music are banned. So, if the government funding is biased
towards different subjects of arts, then the overall development of the arts getscompromised, as the creativity of the artist is limited to produce arts with
specific themes.
It's the duty of the government to be unbiased towards all forms of arts and
contribute to the overall development of arts.
Summarizing the topic, government funding of arts is beneficial for theproliferation of arts, as it helps in preserving as well as developing arts. But, it
may also affect the development, if government funding is concentrated to
particular subjects , rather than overall all development of arts.

Essay topic:
Claim: In any fieldbusiness, politics, education, governmentthose in power
should step down after five years.
Reason: The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through
new leadership.
The author here claims that it is necessary to step down the people in power of
any organization after a brief period of 5 years because he believes that the
surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership.
I disagree to the author's claim to a great extent but not completely.
The explanation of my stand shall begin with the following question: Had
Microsoft been such a huge organization had Bill Gates stepped down after a
brief service of 5 years? Well the answer is NO. You look at any well
established organization in the world like Apple, Tata Industries, etc, all have
had a single leader over the years with the lower level being promoted from
time to time. We all know what happened to Apple after Steve Jobs was sacked
and what happened after he was reappointed.
An age old adage goes as follows: EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER.
How will one gain experience if he has to abdicate his position after 5 years?
An organization excels only if its employees are happy and to achieve this, it
takes years to know what it takes to keep them happy.
Also, with great power comes great responsibility and to be responsible enough
it takes a prolonged interval of time. In case a person has to step down after a
term of 5 years and he is at his peak at the time of abdicating, then that might be
a heavy loss to the organization. The new successor will have to start from
square one and in process learn all the tricks of the trade which will again
require some time. Thus, this practice will result into a rise and fall pattern of
the company.
Just like we say that every coin has two sides, the above practice of prolonged
leadership too has its negative consequences. This might result into dictatorship
and the demolish of democracy. For example the General Parvez Musharaf of
Pakistan withheld is power for over a decade and misused it. Another example
of the same was Hitler.
-

Thus, in my view, the surest path to success for any enterprise isn't revitalization
through new leadership. In fact, this is the best way to review a diminishing or a
crumpling enterprise and not a established business, political or government
field.

GRE Issue 9: It Is Impossible To Make A Significant Contribution Without
First Being Strongly Influenced - With A Free Essay Review
PROMPT: "In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant
contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within
that field." Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree
or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you
take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in
which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these
considerations shape your position.
I partially agree with this statement that in any field of endeavor, it is
impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly
influenced by past achievements within that field.
It is true that under the influence of past achievements, one is more likely to
make profound contributions to certain fields. Throughout history, many
prestigious and prominent people, ranging from scientists to artists, reach greatachievements due to the influence of past achievements. Newton, for example,
is an excellent example of this point. By reading masterpieces of Galileo and
learning the doctrine of Copernicus that earth is in orbit around the sun, he was
not fettered by the religious advocacy that earth is the center of the universe and
finally discovered the law of universal gravitation, which made significant
contributions to physics. Even Newton himself claimed, If I have seen farther
than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants. Thus, past
achievements have a positive effect on later successors who make contributionswithin that field.
However, even though a lot of contributions are made on the basis of
precursors attainments, being first strongly influenced by past achievements is
sometimes detrimental to successors, hindering their inspiration or preventing
them from boldly establishing a new theory which contradicts pervasive
theories. For instance, a famous Chinese painter, Qi Baishi, recruited some
apprentices at the age of seventy. In order to impart painting skills to hisapprentices, he let them imitate his paintings repeatedly at first. But later, after
-
7/29/2019 GRE Issue Essays
17/41
his apprentices were skillful at painting, Qi immediately prohibited them from
copying his painting any more. He argued that they were bound to learn mastery
of painting by imitating his painting, but if they wanted to reach a higher level,
creating fascinating masterpieces, imitation would undoubtedly suppress their
inspiration and thoughts. Therefore, in some areas, if one is first strongly
influenced by predecessors accomplishments, he/she can hardly get rid of this
influence and create invaluable works since all their works are duplications of
others.
In addition, contrary to the statement, it is possible to make significant
contributions with being influenced by past failures instead of achievements.
Sometimes, people can also learn something meaningful from predecessors
failure, such as what factors lead to failure and how to prevent them. In
commercial fields, the famous dot-com Baidu creates its distinctive search
engine. Compared to Googles search engine, the search engine of Baidu wins
more Chinese peoples attention, because it is more suitable for them with
respect to the language habit. Although Googles search engine is very
powerful, it is poor at analyzing sentences typed by Chinese people. Being
influenced by its rivals failure, Baidu overcomes this weakness and eventually
wins more customers, making great contributions to Chinese netizens.
In conclusion, although influence of past achievements makes successors
possible to make profound contributions, being first strongly influenced by
them may be detrimental to their inspiration and thoughts. Also, people can
make contributions under the impact of others past failure.

Essay topics:
Nations should pass laws to preserve any remaining wilderness areas in their
natural state, even if these areas could be developed for economic gain.Write aresponse in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your
reasoning for the position
The actions of the humankind during the past few decades, has by far made this
time the worst period for our environment. We have polluted the air, the water
and the soil, hunted countless animals, destroyed the ecosystem, and made
wildlife impossible in many areas of the world. In short, we have ruined the
natures hierarchy, and we have done it for one reason: we thought the progress
in economy and industry is worth the sacrifice. But there was a point when
some people saw that this is a malfunctioning cycle, and needs to be readjustedsomewhere - nations should start paying attention to the environment, and since
fixing the ruined jungles and forrests and other natural landscapes will probably
take hundreds of years, we should take extra care of the remaining parts.
Having all this in mind, the statement above is making a good point. Many
people, from environmental activists to ordinary people who just care about the
nature and wild life, would undoubtedly defend this statement and agree that
governments should pass laws to preserve the remaining wilderness by anymeans possible. They would argue that the earth, the mother nature, has
nourished us beyound our expectations, while in return we have torn it apart.
Since no other organization would have the power to do so, it would logically
be the goverments responsibility to pass laws to preserve the remaining
wilderness, before they are occupied and destroyed by factories or
incorporations seeking profit.
But looking deeper down the statement, there are many things that should be
defined before passing such rules. For example, there are for sure countries in
africa wich can not provide enough food for their people, and have acres of
wilderness areas preserved, because people are unable to use them properly.
in this case, there should be groups of experts studying the area, to define the
fine line between the areas that should be preserved, and the areas that could be
put to use in order to provide peoples basic needs. The other case, are the

So, although I believe that nature should be preserved from those who plan to
destroy it for economic gain, I think there are expectations to add to the above
statement. While the nature should be preserved natural, we should
understand that the people of today should be respected as much as the peopleof tomorrow. Environmental mottos and quotes sound very pleasing when
they preach about keeping the nature for the future generations, but they largely
forget that we are not providing enough food for the present population. Lets
preserve the natural wilderness areas, but lets do it correctly.

Essay topic:Issue-"people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making."
The statement kept forward by the author speaks about the behavior
of people, according to author people's behavior is not of their ownmaking, rather people's behavior is largely determined by forces.I tend
to agree with the statement presented by the author.
Firstly,I would like to discuss regarding behavior. It can be defined in
variety of ways in accordance with different perspectives,It refers to the
actions and reactions of a person on a certain situation or
condition.humans behavior is influenced by culture, attitudes,
emotions, values, ethics, authority, hypnosis, persuasion, coercionand/or genetics. It shapes the way a person thinks and this in turn
results in different human behaviors.
Furthermore,Human is carried by his behavior.A child is always taught
by his parents or elder people to behave properly as to make child able
to react properly on certain situations and places. They are not their
own making, In-fact they are the parents or other elder people who
forces child behavior. In addition,it teaches child to handle or to tacklevarious difficulties which he will face in his life. For instance,if any child
robs a pencil of his classmate,If his parents let him do that again
without scolding or properly guiding the child. Then, robbing can
become child's behavior and it will harness his future.
Although, their are countless forces that drive our behavior,But at
sometimes,it becomes necessary for behavior to be of own
making.Take an example of a politician such as Narendra Modi,if hetakes any decision by considering large forces rather than his own
making,It might go wrong.
Next,Their are positive as well as negative aspects of behavior driven
by force.Lets take an example of team lead or manager of any
company,he has to behave in a strict way to his employees rather then
in lenient way,for the proper functioning of company. He is largely
determined by forces. At this situation his behavior is not his own
making.

Essay topic:Government should offer free university education to any student who has been admitted to
a university but can't afford it
Every society wants to educate itself. But what if certain segment ofsociety can not bear the cost of university education?, Will it be
mistake of uneducated poor to give priority to bread over the
education or will it be fault of society to keep them separate? As a
society, one should support them to come and should offer free
university education to any student who has been admitted to a
university but can't afford it because if they remain weak, means as a
society we remain weak. If they grow stronger, we grow stronger.
Considering demographic expansion or the growing world population,
which has grown from 2 billion to 10 billion in 200 years, if those
people are left on street without education and treated as a burden
then this demographic expansion will become demographic disaster,a
disaster where uneducated youth will be a burden to society, which can
go out of proportion any time in future causing chaos.
However, if society educates them through a good universityeducation, in 21st century where progress is dependent on the
innovation. One can hardly refuse that we can solve the problems of
the poor only if we can involve them in this journey, they understand
the loopholes better which are effecting them. But if we won't offer this
helping hand to them at this crucial moment, when they have been
admitted to university education but can't afford it, then they might
left out with no choice but to remain in the abyss of their own fears
and may choose to commit crimes for feeding himself.
Some may argue about the cost factor which will come on the society,
but with the new computer technology and internet, the university
education can be provided at cheaper cost. However, when the future
is at stake, the cost plays little role. We must support them in their
endeavor to get educated.
Ultimately, from the bulk of evidence it can be concluded that it is very
important to offer the free university education to any student who has

Essay topic:Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's
field of study.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the
recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the
recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples
shape your position.
Universities is the almost one of the last stop in students life if they
will not continue to further education. In this manner, universities
should require one specific major rather than asking every student totake a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Because,
students' own field calls for big concentration to be successful itself.
At first first glance, the statement seems reasonable that to make the
student be successful in almost all field. However, University is one of
the last education place in students' life, if the statement suggests us
students should require variety of courses before their university
education, then we agree with the statement. Hence, students shouldfocus their own major, which require hard working and endurance at
all time to be successful.
Moreover, there are a lot field needs more commitment than other
fields. Think about the fields of Engineering, Doctor. Engineering field
students are always be in school with either attending to class or they
have to join lab class. Furthermore, they have to finish their project in
the meantime they have to be successful in their exams. And also, they
have to join real companies to finish their intern job also. In the same
way, medical school students also see real facts in their class, they
have to join real surgeries, real cases in hospital. Hence, when we think
their time, it always spends with their own field. Then how can
universities require these students to take a variety of courses outside
the student's field of study. Unfortunately there is no time for this
commitment.
-

In contrast, some people may think that if universities should require
every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of
study. In this manner, they may think that students can be successful
in diverse of fields. However, even one major splits to a lot of differentdepartments after the second or third year. Lets say student's field is
business school. After the second or third year this student has to
choose one concentration graduation major like marketing,
entrepreneurship, management, finance, accounting etc. Thus, it
would be so confusing for students if they are required to take law
classes, biology labs or medical classes as well. As a result of this they
should focus on their own major.
In conclusion, Universities should't be require every student to take a
variety of courses outside the student's field of study. This option
should be flexible, if students think they have time for other variety of
courses then they should able to take those courses, otherwise it
shouldn't be mandatory for every field of study.

Essay topic:A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they
enter college.
Education indeed plays a very vital role in transforming an individualand provides him with basic qualities and adequate skillset which is
required by him to led a good life ahead. Framing the national
curriculum is a vital task for any nation as the future of students
depends on what they have learn from their schools and colleges. The
author here presents us with his viewpoint that a nation should require
all its students to study the same curriculum irrespective of their
interests until they enter college.
Keeping the same national curriculum till school level will surely bring
out uniformity in the education system and the pattern of grading,
schooling and evaluation will be the same throughout. Uniformity and
equality for all would be ensured in this case. For example the
students studying in rural areas would not face any problems in
education and schooling as they would get the same knowledge as
compared to the students in big metropolis. They would have the same
skillsets, knowledge, and equal opportunities to excel further in life as
compared to the other students. For example if introductory course on
computers is introduced as mandatory at the school level then all the
students across the nation can be benefited, on the contrary to the
students getting advantages due to their location and availability of
resources. It will enable the nation to ultimately create a strong
workforce of students capable of finding a much better future for
them. Moreover ensuring a national curriculum would enable studentsto give only one single entrance test for their future college studies
instead of giving several regional entrance tests for appearing to
colleges of a particular state. That is the students can compete on a
national basis.
However there can be a situation where it is economically not possible
for the nation to keep the uniformity in national curriculum particularly
when the cost of the infrastructure required to support the institutionsand the cost to keep the adequate standards of education are not met

by the budget of a particular state within the nation. Also, keeping the
same national curriculum will leave the students bereft of knowledge
about certain subjects which might have been taught only in certain
states. For example there may be a social science subject at schoollevel regarding the lifestyles and cultural heritage of a certain state
which may not be of that much national importance and if the subject
id taught only in that state then ensuring a national curriculum would
not take into consideration the importance of that particular subject.
Moreover the decision regarding the uniformity of the national
curriculum may at times not be in a states favor. For example if many
number of students appear to the colleges of a particular state only
then the indigenous students of that state would find it difficult to
compete with the extra talented crowd of the other states, and thus
these students may have to leave their home states to find a college
that meets their requirements. Thus this would be an unfair treatment
for such students.
Thus I would like to conclude that a national curriculum is necessary to
ensure a spirit of competition among all the students of the nation but
on the same hand a state must have certain regulations to modify the
curriculum according to its needs to provide knowledge which cannot
be given to the students in case of a national curriculum.

Essay topic:135. Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of
study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning
for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider
the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences
shape your position.
Usually, after school, especially the university, most of the people will
step into the society to find a job. Education they have received
sometimes can be a decisive factor on whether they can find a lucrative
job and promote their status in society or not. For this reason, there isalways a debate about whether students should be encouraged to
select the study fields which can best serve to their future careers. As
far as I am concerned, education, of university or college especially,
should be comprehensive. Overly underlining on which side will result
to disadvantages.
Admittedly, education of university can be a turning point to most of
the students. The fair chance that education endows students can helpthem step out of their limited background and moves toward success
on their bare hands. Out of the pragmatic concerns, both educators
and students sometimes may prefer the majors which seem to have
the most potential career opportunity in the near future. Under the
severely financial condition, students nowadays carry much heavier
burden then before. It is so imperative that they need a fair job to
support their living.
However, taking college education based merely on this, whether they
will finally realize their initial target is still questionable. The reason is
that this is an instant changing society with the progress of
globalization which means students need to be adaptive and well-
rounded that will not be easily left behind. As a phase of enlightened
and preparatory, the responsibility of university should be capable of
providing a wide range of choices that support students personally,
academically and also socially instead of focusing on specific career

skills training which is the aim of technical school. To educators, they
should foresee the interrelationship among study fields and how this
works in the future society to encourage their students make smarter
choices in a long run instead of short-sighted ones. Likeinterdiscipline, means courses backing up each other and its wider
range knowledge can be advantage to lead to breakthroughs in some
vocation. For instance, neuromarketing, a new study field based on
psychology and marketing theories, assisting company target its
potential customers more accurately, has become a welcome trend for
students who tend to be involved in business.
Furthermore, talents and interests should be also taken into accountwhen the educators give their suggestions to students on their study
planning. Interest is always called "the best guider" which impels
students' intrinsic motivation to constant craving for their expecting
goals. Meanwhile, students' personal talents can be splendid additive
on their study field, as well as their interests. Binding with these two
factors, education will work to its extreme extend and students will
become the direct beneficiaries. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of
Facebook, although he did not finish his university education, he still
exemplified the miracle of the combination of education, talents and
interests. He utilizes this strength to start a revolution to transform the
conventional mode of communication among people worldwide which
also brings to him billions of dollars and fame. It is Zuckerberg's talent
and interest decide his career and even create a vocational field, not
the career trends confines his destination. Therefore, the educators
may suggest students to think over their hidden motivation and helpthem keep proactive on future planning.
To sum up, education is to prepare students in a well-rounded range.
Being pragmatic for the future career's concern should not be blamed,
however, the educators must clear their mind on what is education and
what is the thing that is most essential that students need for a better
future.

Essay topic:To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major
cities.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the
statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might
not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
The major cities, usually leading the economic development, respect
some aspects of the society characteristics, indeed. However, the
society is a multidimensional and complex system. To understand a
society, many other factors should be known about, such as festival,
traditional culture and so on.
To begin with, the major cities can delegate some aspects of the
society. The economic is usually advanced in major cities, and the
popular garments and culture in major cities will thrive in minor cities
later. Not only these things, the modern life style is also leading by the
major cities. For instance, the PayPal, eBay, Amazon and other
electronic commerce services are used in the metropolis first, then
with the development of fast express and other mature system, theyare spread to minor cites. It is same to Facebook and twitter, which are
first popular in higher education institute and collar worker. Therefore,
it is somewhat reasonable that the major cities are representative in
some areas.
However, it should be noticed that society characteristics contain many
other matters, which are more obvious in small villages than in the
metropolis. For example, the traditional dietary habit is mostlymaintained in the countryside. Due to the rapid life style and high-
pressure in metropolis, fast food and identical set meal are
prosperous. To meet the different demands of people, who come from
different areas in the world, the set meals in office buildings are
usually normal and lack characteristics. In contrast, in villages, families
usually have enough time and sufficient materials to prepare and cook
the traditional food. Furthermore, the similar factors contain festivals,
which remained significant in villages. Though the modern and popular

life styles are lead by major cities, the traditional and slow life
characteristics are remained in small cities. These factors are also
indispensable to understand a society.
From another perspective, the society includes the huge cities and
small ones, which should all be took into consideration. Though the
major cities respect main trend in some aspects of the society, the
number of the major cities are limited in one country. Even assuming
that the influence of small villages on society is minor, the amount of
the villages is huge. Because of this area and population advantage,
the life and dressing habit in small cities may be more representative
than in huge cities from the holistic views.
To understand a society comprehensively, miscellaneous matters
should be considered, the knowledge only about few major cities are
not enough. Both huge cities and small villages need to be understood
to know a society.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the
recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the
recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples
shape your position.
There are many reasons convince me to contradict this
recommendation. Prior to conducting any scrutiny, the structure of a
typical nation should be taken into consideration. Many states consist
of diverse ethnic, religious, linguistic minorities that necessitates theirspecific considerations; therefore, the unified national curriculum does
not satisfy their educational requirements.
To establish a framework for this recommendation, in the first place, I
aim to elaborate a particular multi-cultural, multi-religions and multi-
linguistics nation. Nowadays, the human rights charter demands all
people to be treated equally without any racial segregation and ethnic
discriminations. It signifies that all people regardless their colors, races, religions, languages and orientations should enjoy the full range
of human rights. Thus, curriculum is not an exception; in a state with
diverse minorities, various curriculums corresponding to their ethnic,
religion and language requirements should be developed and
implemented. Under this circumstance, all people would benefit the
justice and equality so that they can be educated without any violation
of their rights. However, there is no doubt, that in such condition,
there would be the common educational materials which should be
included in all various curriculums as they all live and serve under the
same flag.
As an individual grown up in a society where all minorities have been
forced to study the similar curriculum until arriving at college, I have
suffered from its flaws and weaknesses. Throughout education period,
we never provided with subjects based on our mother tongue; it
implies that we have been treated unfair because it can be considered
-

as a violation of one of our authentic rights. Furthermore, we never
allowed to formally learn about our own religious rituals, historical
background as well as our rich literature.
In conclusion, the optimal manner to educate people is to firstly
recognize their identity and requirements and then develop a
curriculum which best match their condition. If a society is composed
of various ethnic and religious classifications, the optimal condition is
to consider their necessities from the birds eye view, otherwise their
rights to the open and fair education is interfered with and
subsequently negative consequences may occur in the future when
people one day realize that they had been treated with bias anddiscrimination.

The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority.
A society is well- being when considers certain key factors to increase
its citizenship's satisfaction. One of these main factors is authority that
should be controlled carefully among different sections of societies.
Giving freedom to members of society without consider special
elements may lead to making an irreversible damage and destroyed
the calamity of society.
Before considering the term of authority, it is important to define the
features of the great society because these terms (authority and the
well being of a society) have close relationship with each other. The
well being of a society is depend on particular factors that every
government should take them into account and control their society at
a right way. One of these factors is providing people with golden
opportunity to have decent facilities in their countries and another is
that paying attention to their healthcare problems. The other one is
decreasing the rate of joblessness and increasing public transportation
in order to enhancing peoples satisfaction. All of these factors are
important and prerequisites of having a good society but if people donot have authority to express their feeling and complain about some
rules, all of these appropriate features will be overlooked. Because
people want to be freedom to talk about their problems and in some
cases criticize about the performance of their political men.
Question authority to adopt a significant strategy in order to tackle the
problems is a mutual deal for both governments and people because
the rate of rendering the best solution will be increased. People find
better feeling about their government and their reliance on their
political men at international events will be enhanced. For example,
people who have authority to complain about the performance of their
mayor in a small town would be able to govern their society twice as
well as others who do not have freedom about electing their mayor. At
the first case, people lay on their mayor whenever their city run into a
problem and unite with each other to find a best solution as regard to
have a good society. While at the second case, people have to respect

to their mayors rules and obligations which will eventually lead to
looming domestic war.
Although question authority has advantages for both people and
governments, there are some disadvantages that cannot be overlooked
easily. If the government does not realize the scope of authority and
does not consider certain valuable component little by little society
faces with several perilous situations in long term. For instance, in case
that a mayor who offers authority for everyone and does not control
them in a right way, it is more likely that someone try to abuse from
their authority and make an irreversible damage. Someone thinks their
authority provide them with opportunity to do any things that theywant and follow their own sake.
In conclusion, enhancing the well-being of a society has certain
prerequisites that increasing the awareness of people about the scope
of authority is one of them. People should be aware about their rights
and question authority in a right way. If the government does not
control the scope of peoples authority, someone disuse from their
situations and destroy the reputation of society the entire world. Therefore, the well-being of a society is enhanced when the most
proportion of its people consider key principles about their authority.

Author claims that government should focus on solving currentproblems than on ancipated future problems. Government controls on
society and they are the authorized persons to take decision about the
society, So they should be aware of intricate level of problems in
society and their consequences.
Government should focus on current problems happening in society if
they are harming to society extremely. Ex.If any contagious disease
spreads among a country then it is very dangerous. It has to becontrolled because it's effect cannot be controlled later on. It is better
to look at current problems is to avoid problems in future. As we know
prevention is better than cure.Because ignorance of today's will cause
danger for future. For example Now-days In India many cities are
developing drastically, it is good to have advancement but there
should be consideration of environment also.It should be sustainable
growth. Here many cities are making by huge construction buildings
but what about people who were living on their land? They should have
their own place to live as they were living happily. Also many chemical
and other industries are growing so government should take action so
that these industries will not violate environmental norms.
Government should make actions on current issues like education
growth among ountry.Because if people will not educated then what
will be future of country?Country's growth totally depends on youth
growth. They are the power of the country. So at this situation if country
will think of future problems like hike in prices of fuel then it will not
helpful for the future of the country itself. So government should make
what is priority of our nation? In which ways we can build up our
nation.
However government should also careful about future plans also. It is

their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position
and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your
position, you should address both of the views presented.
Choosing a field to study in college is a one of the most important
decision in one life, when one need to have at least general idea about
their future job would be because it is in the college when one can
prepare best for their future job. So, what is the criteria for choosingthe field to study in college or most of the case, choosing your career?
Some only consider their own talents and interests while for others,
availability of the job or the ease of finding a job after graduation is
the most important aspect to look at. In my opinion, interest and own
talent are all-important aspects in choosing the field of study in
college, while the availability of the field is only of second importance
at to redefine a general field to the specific mainstream and career.
Every field of study as well profession is like a game with its own rules,
and you have to be equipped with ability, skills, strong determination
in order to win against a lot opponents. Such abilities is your talent
and the necessary skilled is only gained through you hard work with
strong incentives; so with both talent and interest, you have a good
start to win the game, the rest is your hard work and, in some cases,
luck. Besides, studying in the field you desire can bring about
satisfaction and thus motivation in your day in and day out in colleges,
and later on in your future career.
On the other hand, choosing a field of study base merely on job
available in that field without consideration of you interest and talent
is no different from preparing for a game with low competition but at
the same time you have little advantages, because either you are not
as genius as other people in this field or you have not tried hard
enough for it due to low interest? In addition, it is a long time when

unlikely that the field which had once plenty of job still remains the

deciding between several interested fields or in later stage when you
have to choose specific mainstream in the last two years of your
college.
In conclusion, only in your interested field, you can feel enjoyable and
have incentives to strive for being the best in college study, which is an
essential attribution for your future career with success and enjoyable.
However, the availability of the job is also one of many aspects to look

Essay topic:Laws should be flexible enough to take account of various circumstances, times, and places.
Laws are strictures that are made and practised so that people in a
region live in complete harmony and peace, with independence andrights, without encroaching on the same of others. Hence, laws are
indispensible for sustaining a society; in absence of law, there is
complete anarchy, mayhem and destruction. Additionally, for a law to
be fair and just, it should be impartial and unbiased. Hence, law should
also be rigid and inflexible, not giving in to circumstances, times or
places.
Though it seems that since the nature of crimes vary and the extent tothe maliciousness of the convict also varies, therefore the judgment on
the fate of the guilty should too. While a rich man may steal something
merely for the joy of it, a poor man may do the same for his existence.
Hence, more compassion should be shown towards the poor man in
determining his fate, while a rich person should be taught a lesson.
However, it would be wrong in doing so. The next time, the poor man
would take the liberal outlook as his right to steal and his impecunious
as his armor for shielding against punishment. This explanation would
be more apparent if the crime is a murder. No matter who commits a
murder, the punishment should be the same.
Having said that, there are other exceptions to the above stated point.
One might think that having such absolutes is wrong, as one cannot
give same punishment to a person who kills in self-defense. Of course,
it is true, but then the law should be able to distinguish between the
same, and should not resolve the same by flexibility. Hence, while
framing laws, they should be framed with utmost attention keeping in
mind all possibilities that might prove the law too strict or too lenient.
Additionally, if the law changes for different circumstances, then the
powerful elite would use the same for their own benefit. From time and
again, we have seen examples wherein a tyrant or ruler pardons
himself or his beloveds from any form of punishment. This is so,

because the law changes according to the whims of a ruler and is not
rigid.
Laws should be flexible with time, only to change and adapt to the
present needs. Looting is not fair whether it is done during a famine or
in good times. Hence, looting should be seen with the same repulsion
in both circumstances. However, laws which prevented drivers to drive
above a certain speed limit need to change considering that new
automobiles are much faster and safer than earlier. Hence, of though a
law should change with time, the value attached to it should not. For
instance, in the latter example, breaking the speed limit should have
the same fine for everyone alike.
Laws are made and brought into practice for serving the people in an
unbiased manner and to promote what is fair. Making them mutable,
would bar them from serving the very purpose they were made for.
Only by being immutable and insensitive to variations in circumstances
would a law be fair and fruitful
