Finding a work-from-home (or remote job) can seem to be an impossible proposition. It’s like finding a unicorn. You’ve heard they exist, but you’ve never actually seen one.

Many people ask about finding jobs you can do from home. Whether you have chil-dren, would like freedom to relocate, or just prefer peace and quiet, working from home sounds ideal.

Many companies that create virtual posi-tions or departments often do so for financial reasons. It may be cheaper to allow employees

to work remotely. If a job requires travel, it might not make sense to force the employee to live in the same city as the corporation. In other cases, allowing a remote assignment increases the chances a company will have access to the best employees.

The Survey of Income and Program Partici-pation reported a 45 percent increase in em-ployees working from home at least one day per week between 1997 and 2010. It appears that a large portion of those people are self-employed. If you want to work from home but don’t want to start your own business, where should you begin?

The first thing to remember is to proceed with caution. There are a startling number of remote jobs available online that are, simply put, scams. And, unfortunately, a number of legitimate remote opportunities are not listed

as such online. Often, it’s not until you’re in the interview that you learn the hiring man-ager is open to you working from home.

The types of jobs where remote work-ing is possible are often technology-depen-dent. Their heavy reliance on computers and the internet are what makes working from anywhere possible. The types of jobs you may find are web developer, virtual assistant and technology support. In or-der to see what’s out there, search Indeed.com for “work from home” or “remote” rather than by city name.

After you’ve found what appears to be a great opportunity, take the time to do your research. In fact, research it more than you would an in-person role. Get all of your questions answered. A work-from-home job has the potential (at least initially) to

go awry more quickly than when you work from an office. You aren’t able to form the same bonds as quickly when you aren’t together in person.

Here are a few questions to consider. Why is the role remote? Will you be the only remote person, or is the entire team working from home? What technology (such as a laptop, cellphone and Internet) does the company provide, and what are you expected to pro-vide? It’s also important to meet other team members. Are they committed to their work, or are they using the work-from-home option as an excuse? Do the current employees feel the work remote environment is working for the company?

In the end, finding the perfect work-from-home job is a lot of work, so be sure the one you select is worth your time.

live on after this administration, because it is so important we really have dedicated resources in the county building strictly for education.”

Gray, who will be making more than $119,000 annually in his role, said key focus areas for him will be supporting pre-K and early-childhood intervention ini-tiatives, workforce development and more investment in school facilities.

“As a lifelong educator, and particularly as a school super-intendent, what we’re endeavor-ing to do requires some of that background,” Gray said. “That is knowing schools, being a teacher at heart, but also understand-ing governance policy and all of the things it takes in order to accomplish what mayor Har-ris and the commission want to accomplish.”

Gray is currently executive director of the Principal Super-visors Program of New Leaders, a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing school-based coaching and leadership development.

He attended Memphis City Schools and the University of Memphis and began his career in education as principal of Lester pre-K-8 and Craigmont Middle School.

As Jackson Public Schools su-perintendent, the largest school system in Mississippi, Gray was named Superintendent of the

Year by the National Associa-tion of School Superintendents in 2016 – after graduation rates increased and the dropout rate decreased during his tenure.

A few months after winning that award, Gray resigned as su-perintendent after JPS was put on probation and received an F grade from the Mississippi De-partment of Education in its ac-countability report for the 2015-16 school year.

Gray on Thursday said he resigned due to a disagreement

between himself and the school board on how to face the chal-lenges of the district, and that his time away made him better prepared for his new role.

“We had three to four years of constant success, almost magi-cal, then assessment and stan-dards changed, accountability systems changed and I knew at that point we needed to have wholesale changes in the dis-trict,” he said. “The school board at the time didn’t agree with those wholesale changes, so we

agreed to disagree.”Harris said concerns about

Gray’s time at JPS were not an is-sue after speaking with him and his references. He said SCS is at a critical juncture as the county’s largest school system because it will be changing leaders.

“He’s won many awards. He was a schoolroom teacher. He’s been a superintendent,” Harris

said. “Everything checked out for us.”

Harris said Gray will be key in the discussion on Hopson’s consolidation plan, which in-cludes 28 school closures, 10 new schools and could cost the district at least $700 million, and other approaches to edu-cation county government may consider.

“There are a lot of different types of (governance) models across the country,” Harris said. “There are some where the mayor actually appoints the superinten-dent and that superintendent is approved by the county commis-sioners. All those kinds of ideas should be explored, from the Hopson plan to the structure of governance to procedural issues to when the budget should be brought (to the county).”

Gray will start his new role the first week of January pend-ing approval from the County Commission.

In this column we have analyzed why it is nearly impossible for Corporate Innova-tion teams to successfully commercialize new products, services, and business models both within and outside of their core busi-ness at length.

The risks alone make Legal and Brand de-partments quake, quiver, and fight against these innovations. The use of new channels, new materials, or partners makes product managers reject an innovation concept over me too products for which they understand the path to market and have paid to have 100s of pages of market research. Then, there are Executive land mines in Gate Reviews, etc.

After a company has moved into a mature phase, it is a surprise that any innovations make it to market given these factors.

Here’s a too little to help you with this Enterprise-level struggle. You don’t have to do it alone.

In fact, with some guidance, metrics, and goodwill, as well as old-fashioned persuasion, you can liberate those many commercial en-gines that already work on your behalf, the legion of people who depend on your business to thrive, your suppliers.

Here is what I am saying put plainly: de-mand that your suppliers innovation for you.

Bake it into their metrics that they will find new, open needs in the market, create new solutions that have sustainable competitive advantage, and find new, novel ways to com-mercialize these solutions on your behalf. Ask them to tech scout from adjacent markets and find materials you can apply to your category

for novel purposes. Encourage them to find market insights, test new concepts, and to push the boundaries on your category.

Leverage your supplier network to accel-erate the pave of innovation within your cat-egory. Think about all of the suppliers you have—packaging, technology, parts and ma-terials, industrial designers, brokers, distribu-tors, and supply chain, for example.

Now envision giving each a metric each year that would provide you insight into parts of the markets where you may have blind spots. Another metric could be creating new solutions (new to the market) that pay off that insight. Perhaps they can test the solution with various market segments before bring-ing it to you in a small pilot, where things like pricing and demand can be vetted in a real-world context.

If the preliminary tests go well, you can set it up where you can have exclusive rights for

a set period of time. Suddenly, you have two major wins. You

have your suppliers bringing more focused, strategic value to you. You have also grown your innovation efforts without investing in full time resources.

Most valuably, you have taken a lot of inter-nal risks—reputational, legal, brand, channel conflicts—out of innovation equation. These smaller firms can afford to be more adaptive and can follow opportunities in the speed re-quired to be first-to-market.

This model of supplier-led innovation can be a win-win for both organizations. It re-quires good metrics, deeper collaboration, and trusted partners. Pick a partner and see how it can work for you.

“She has been there for me and I have been there for her.” This is the story of a woman who gave her kidney to her best friend, so she could have a longer life and a higher quality of life.

Over ten years ago we were introduced to Ms. Cathy Davis. We fell in love with her imme-diately. She is a nonprofit leader who is 100% committed to the people she serves, just like so many of our readers. She gives of herself on the job, and off. We work with Cathy in the area of fundraising. She is always strategizing

on how to ask for funds and resources that are needed by her agency. She is busy at work encouraging others to give.

But earlier this month Cathy was the do-nor. In fact, she was a living donor, giving her kidney to her close friend Lynn. They have been friends for 28 years and members of the same women’s group. Cathy saw first-hand how Lynn’s life changed after she began dialysis in 2016. She saw how her life became regimented – Lynn had dialysis bags delivered to her home, and at a certain time of day she had to hook herself up to a pump and manage her dialysis. This is not for the faint of heart!

Cathy wanted her to have a better life and she told Lynn she wanted to see if she quali-fied as an organ donor. Turns out she qualified. The next hurdle was whether she would be a

direct match. Turns out she was. “Sometimes you have to go through one or two people to be a match, but it came together quickly, and I was pleased to do it. I am a spiritual person and God put it on my heart and I did what I was called to do.”

Earlier this month they both went into sur-gery. Cathy’s surgery took 2.5 hours. She was out of the hospital in three days and is now healing and regaining her strength. Her time off from work is covered under the Family Medi-cal Leave Act and her medical costs are covered under Lynn’s insurance.

Here are a few things to know about this process. Organs from living donors have a better chance of taking, and they tend to last longer. You can’t get fired for being a living donor. There are incentives for people to be

living donors. Livers and kidneys are the two most common living organ transplants. Nearly 6,000 living donor transplants take place each year, that’s almost 40% of all organ donations.

Last words from Cathy: “I gave her my kid-ney – it is no longer mine, now it is hers. I hope that others will do the same. It is not that big deal to give up a kidney when you see how much someone else gains. This is the best Christmas gift I have ever given: I have ex-tended her life, and this will make her life better. All the other gifts pale next to this one! It is a very humbling experience.”

Here is a link to the National Kidney Foundation so you can learn more about be-ing a living donor: https://www.kidney.org/transplantation/beadonor.

A Christmas gift that lasts a life time

The Sons of Confederate Veter-ans contested that move, but a Davidson County Chancery Court upheld the legality of the sale and the monuments’ removal. SCV is appealing the decision.

Strickland was also critical of the protest and pressure from Sawyer, saying she wanted the city to violate the law.

Sawyer attended a Memphis Greenspace forum at the National Civil Rights Museum Thursday evening to speak about the con-troversy for what she said would be the final time.

“It continues to show how our voices and the voices of black women in America continue to be absent,” Sawyer said. “We all say we mean well and we are all good people. But the erasure of public movements from the words that end up in history books can’t go on silently. I didn’t want to be here. I didn’t want to have to say any of this.”

Turner, who was part of the evening forum on the future of the

two parks, later said, “History will remember the entire struggle.”

“I think that Commissioner Sawyer upholds and supports a long tradition of activists and people in this city who have more tenure,” he added. “Think of what else we can do if we stay together.  That’s really what today means to me.”

Sawyer said she respected Turner for putting his job and his family’s income and safety on the line to take on the role in the re-moval of the monuments.

“We shouldn’t have to fight about who gets the recognition,” she said. “Whatever history choos-es to write is what they choose to write.”

A marker denoting the his-tory of the Sons of Confederate Veterans remains in Health Sci-ences Park, along with the base of the Forrest monument behind a chain-link fence watched by a private security guard Thursday evening.

All remaining monuments, markers and placards making any reference to the Confederacy were

removed from Memphis Park this past August in advance of Diner en Blanc, a large invitation-only dinner held in the park.

Turner was served Thursday with the most recent lawsuit in the ongoing legal battle the city undertook. Forrest’s descendants are suing the city and Memphis Greenspace for damages, alleging the remaining base in Health Sci-ences Park is part of the Forrests’ gravesite.

Sons of Confederate Veterans president Lee Millar stood outside the chain-link fence with several others who came out of curiosity and with family heirlooms from the dedication of the statue 100 years earlier.

Tommy Pacello, president of the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, an organization working to better tie together the institutions in the medical district and create mixed uses including housing, calls the park a “very critical public greenspace” that connects many different parts of the district.

    He also acknowledged that

some who work in the district or are students at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center have been hesitant to patronize the park even in the last year.

“That pedestal still casts a big shadow,” he said.

Jan Byrd, a Memphis Greens-pace board member, remembers getting word that the statue of Forrest was about to be removed a year ago and still perhaps not

realizing how big the moment would be as she prepared to go out on a cold, rainy and overcast night.

“I didn’t realize at that mo-ment what was happening un-til we were in the moment,” she said. “I could smell the concrete being burned off. As I think back, what I say to other people is that night was bigger than me. It was a big deal.”

Coverage Area – Public Records Real Estate TransactionsWarranty Deeds, Trust Deeds, and other special deeds are compiled daily from the records of the Shelby County Register’s office.Warranty Deeds usually convey title to real estate from the seller to the buyer.Trust Deeds, in effect, convey a lien on the real estate from a borrower, guarantor, person or firm putting up the real estate as collateral or security for some purpose, to a lender, person or firm receiving collateral or security for some purpose. A lender is usually designated by its trustee. In many instances, the borrower is at the same time a buyer of the real estate, and is executing a purchase money mortgage. When that occurs, the Warranty Deed and Trust Deed will usually have consecutive, or nearly consecutive, instrument numbers.Other special deeds also transfer an interest in the real estate from the grantor to the grantee.
