Causes:
• It is an autoimmune disease.• Autoimmune diseases are caused by a
jumpy immune system (it attacks itself).• Other than that, no one knows the
causeBut it might be heredity.
![Page 3: Gravesdusty](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022072000/55d4f7a6bb61eb741f8b4624/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
The correct way:• Stimulating hormones tell the thyroid to get to work• Eventuallymore hormonestell it to shut off. • (EX: The thyroid is given the signal to release chemicals thatwill increase metabolism, then stops when the
Negative feedback is given.

What goes wrong:
The thyroid is attacked by the immune system (yea, those guys that are supposed to help us. Thanks, guys)
The thyroid then makes more thyroxine.
This causes increased metabolism, changes in mood and appearance, and a hate for the immune system.
One cheap cut out later…

Risk factors: slightly less grave, but still grave…
• A family history of the disease• Sex — Women are seven times more likely to develop
Graves' disease than men.• Age — Graves' disease usually develops after age 20.
• Stress• Pregnancy• Smoking (stops you from absorbing medicine)• Graves’ Disease affects approximately 2 to 3% of the
population (‘bout 10 million people). The figure may be higher because some may have bulging eyes, but are not diagnosed with thyroid problems.

Treatment
• Beta blockers, anti-thyroid medication, and…more radioactive iodine, are all forms of treatment for Grave’s disease.
• Some believe that a vitamin deficiency could lead to Grave’s disease, so taking vitamins could possibly decrease the risk.
