FRIENDS OF THE GRAVES COUNTY LIBRARY
Friend Semi-annual Book Sale is Almost
here! by Khadra Turley, President
April brings another
Book Sale to the Graves
County Public Library
again this year.
The Book Sale begins
with Preview night on
Thursday, April 25 from
5:00 to 6:00 pm. As
members of the GCPL
Friends, one of the
perks is that you get to
browse and purchase
before the public. Then
the book sale will be
open to everyone on Fri-
day, April 26 and Satur-
day, April 27 from 9:00
am until 5:00 pm. Avail-
able for purchase will
be fiction and nonfic-
tion hardcover and pa-
perback books, chil-
dren’s books, dvd’s, mu-
sic, puzzles .
Our Friends are
what makes this sale so
successful – from do-
nating books and giving
their time to staff the
sale. When you do
spring cleaning and have
books you are getting
rid of, bring them to
the library for the
book sale. Remember
one person’s throwa-
ways/giveaways can be
a treasure to someone
else.

The library offers many specialty programs throughout the year. For families, we have Bingo
Night, individuals of all ages come by and play bingo for a chance to win a prize. If you really love
to craft, come by the library one Saturday out of the month and make something special to take
home with you. We usually have crafts which correspond with the season, for example, in April we
will have a Flower Key Chain craft. These crafts are also appropriate for families.
Speaking of April, the second week of the month is national library week! If you visit us anytime
between the 8th and the 13th you can participate in a candy jar guessing game, as well as a chance
to win gift cards, and returns will be fine free for the whole week.
For adult only programs, we have once a month paint parties! You can paint a special creation on
canvas with step by step instructions while enjoying refreshments. The painting is yours to take
home and display it for family and friends. This summer we will also have an adult summer reading
program, where you will be able to fill out a card with books you read and get a chance to win dif-
ferent prizes. Exact prizes will be announced in the coming month!
There are so many activities for our community to participate in, if you have any further ques-
tions please feel free to ask. Make sure you check with us for specific dates for our programs!
We are always excited about community participation and are pleased to serve you in the future.

Teens have become a new main focus at Graves County Public Library. As always, the Teen Advisory
Board has meetings every other Thursday of the month. They are the library’s behind the scenes idea
suppliers for materials we acquire for teens, they help plan aspects of new teen programs, and encour-
age their friends to join us!
Beginning in summer 2018, we decided to try Teen Anime Night. It is a huge celebration of mutual
interests in the age group. The teens eat pizza, play board games, and trade off deciding which anime
we watch. They all respect each other’s genre of choice and we watch many different types of shows!
Teen Anime Night takes place typically on the first Friday of each month.
In winter of 2018, we added another program, Teen Art Studio. This program is a time for teens
to come and participate in a creative free for all. Canvases, paint, markers, poster board, coloring pag-
es, and a different small project is provided each art studio session. Teen Art Studio usually happens
in the middle of each month on a Friday afternoon. Look forward to these monthly events and more!
During Summer Reading, The Mastersons Illusionists will join us again for another amazing show on
June 28th! We will also have another round of a Murder Mystery Dinner, and a tie-dye DIY program!
We love creating a place for our community’s teenagers to hang out, be creative, and feel safe!

Being a difference maker is inherent in the very na-
ture of what you do as a Friend of the Library. Your
membership fee helps fund our Summer Reading Pro-
gram.
Summer reading programs are critical to a child's
ability to not only keep information learned the previ-
ous year, but also to grow in knowledge and critical
thinking skills for the coming year. Summer reading
programs also generate more interest in the library and
events held at the library.
This year’s summer reading theme is “A Universe of
Stories”. We are hoping for an “out of this world”
turnout. Our programs include animals, science, a magi-
cian and crafts. Thank you for being a friend and thank
you for supporting our community’s youth.

Are you from Graves County?
Yes! I was born in Mayfield in the old hospital before it became the apartments, and I’ve lived in
Wingo my entire life.
Who are your favorite authors and why do you love them?
One of my favorite authors is William Faulkner, for his stream of consciousness writing and satire
mixed with suspense and a dash of dark humor. Another favorite of mine would be Kiera Cass, a young
adult author who wrote The Selection series. Her characters make me feel like I know them as per-
sonal friends.
What are you currently reading?
I’m guilty of reading more than one book at a time. Currently I have Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle by
Katie Coyle, Horse Shy by Bonnie Bryant, and Petals on the Wind by V.C. Andrews.
What are your outside interests?
Since I was a child, I’ve loved video games and I still do! I’m also big into fashion, and I love to try
different crafting projects and cooking with my close friends. I love animals and I have a black cat,
who is truly like my baby. My other hobbies include cross stitching, coloring, nature photography, and
riding my bike.
How long have you been with GCPL and what job titles have you had here?
This April I will have been at GCPL for four years! I started out as a library assistant, and last spring
I was lucky enough to take over all of the teen programming and services.
What gives you the most satisfaction as a library employee?
The two most satisfying type of moments for me revolve around our teenage library patrons. It gives
me so much joy to see how excited they are to come to programs, and how easily they make friends
with one another. The second bit of satisfaction is when the parents come and thank me for having a
program where their kids can come and just hang out. It always surprises me, and it makes me incredi-
bly happy to provide the time and space for them.
What changes have you seen at GCPL since you began working here?
In four years I’ve watched GCPL grow incredibly large, in terms of both programming and patrons.
From children, teens, and adults alike, our programs have expanded into many exciting crafts, speak-
ers, and much more! It brings all of those patrons back to our next exciting event! We also have di-
versified the services we provide quite a lot in the past couple of years, which is a big necessity for
our community, I believe.
