Fighting Stigma Through Empathy--By Karl Shallowhorn, Director of CommunityAdvocacy, Mental Health Association of ErieCounty and Compeer Buffalo:

One of the best weapons to defeat stigma is empa-thy; the ability to try to understand and share thefeelings of another. It has often been described as theability to “walk in the other person’s shoe’s” and tryto gain a perspective from the other person’s livedexperience. That’s the thing about our world today. There isn’t enough empathy. If society, as a whole, was able to be more compassionate, then perhapsthose living with mental health disorders would beable to get more support thereby helping them tohave healthier lives. By addressing the issue of stig-ma in this manner everyone benefits.

Our Dale Association counseling participantswould agree:

“We’re just like everyone else. But we just need a lit-tle help.” - Tina

“If you didn’t know that I had a mental illness, youcould never tell just by looking at me. I look likeyou.” - Anonymous

“The stigma I face is often worse that the bipolar dis-order. It’s a very misunderstood diagnosis. I justwish more people would educate themselves aboutmental health and not judge me by my condition.” - Alec

The 4 P’s of Choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan

The Annual Election Period (AEP) for Medicare plansis from October 15 to December 7 for coverage begin-ning January 1, 2018. People can only change orenroll in Medicare plans during the AEP or duringspecific lifetime events, such as when they turn 65.

Keep these 4 key areas in mind when comparingMedicare plans:

1. Price: The overall cost of a Medicare Advantageplan can vary, based on needs and income. Create a“health care budget” that outlines expected healthneeds, and compare overall costs.Key questions:• What is the plan’s monthly premium? • Is there a deductible you must meet firstbefore coverage begins?• Are there copays for doctor or specialist visits?

2. Products: Find out if the plan’s covered serviceswill help lower the cost of managing your health con-ditions, or if you will need to pay out of pocket forcertain health care needs. Sometimes, the least expen-sive Medicare plan (or even the most expensive one!)may not necessarily be best. Key questions:• Is there dental or vision coverage?• Can members receive help managing theirchronic conditions?• Are in-home services or care covered?

3. Providers: A Medicare plan should ideally allowyou to keep seeing the doctors you prefer. Manyhealth plans require members to see doctors within aprovider network. Other plans allow members to seeany doctor, but these plans usually cost more.

Key questions:• Are preferred doctors “in network”?• If the primary care provider is in network butspecialists are not, is it possible to still get specialistvisits covered by referral? • How close to home are the nearest in-networkdoctors?

4. Prescription Drugs: It's important to know whichmedications are covered. Make a list of your medica-tions, then check the Medicare prescription drug for-mularies of the plans being considered. A formulary isa list of medications covered by a health plan.Key questions:• Which prescriptions do you need?• Will the Medicare plan cover these prescrip-tions, or will they cost more?• If any medications are not covered, is there anacceptable alternative in the formulary?
