Volume 22 Issue 4 December 2016/January 2017 GRASS CLIPPINGS DESERT BLUEGRASS ASSOCIATION CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES - 2016 By Carole Wothe It’s that time of year, Christmas is coming, and it’s our tradition to get out there and spread some cheer in our community. Music is not intended to be played only behind closed doors, it’s intended to be shared. Let’s share. We are scheduled to play at Luminaria Nights, December 9, 6-8 PM. In the past few years, we have worked our way into the Pavilion, which is a covered, lighted structure. We have filled the space to standing-room only with listeners. They sing along; they dance. We are preparing bell ribbons for children to play along with. The Eastside night workshop is practicing at 5:45 each Monday. Join us if you can. Special songbooks have been emailed, but if you need one, send a request to [email protected] We will also play for the VA hospital patients on Saturday, December 10, 12-2 PM. We meet on the VA Hospital grounds, building 60 in the cafeteria. Some of us may be visiting patient rooms on that day, also. Sierra del Sol Jam will also have a Christmas theme on December 22, 5-6:30. The Salvation Army has requested players at their red kettles throughout Tucson. These will be smaller groups. If you want to organize a small group to play, send your available time and general location by email, [email protected], and we’ll find out where the nearest red kettle is to you. As the Doc says, “Turn off that TV, get off the couch and come enjoy some bluegrass with us.” What a great season to get out there!

CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES - 2016

By Carole Wothe

It’s that time of year, Christmas is coming, and it’s our tradition to get out there and spread some cheer in our community. Music is not intended to be played only behind closed doors, it’s intended to be shared. Let’s share.

We are scheduled to play at Luminaria Nights, December 9, 6-8 PM. In the past few years, we

have worked our way into the Pavilion, which is a covered, lighted structure. We have filled the space to standing-room only with listeners. They sing along; they dance. We are preparing bell ribbons for children to play along with.

The Eastside night workshop is practicing at 5:45 each Monday. Join us if you can. Special songbooks have been emailed, but if you need one, send a request to [email protected]

We will also play for the VA hospital patients on Saturday, December 10, 12-2 PM. We meet on the VA Hospital grounds, building 60 in the cafeteria. Some of us may be visiting patient

rooms on that day, also.

Sierra del Sol Jam will also have a Christmas theme on December 22, 5-6:30.

The Salvation Army has requested players at their red kettles throughout Tucson. These will be smaller groups. If you want to organize a small group to play, send your available time and general location by email,

[email protected], and we’ll find out where the nearest red kettle is to you.

As the Doc says, “Turn off that TV, get off the couch and come enjoy some bluegrass with us.”

What a great season to get out there!

TOWN OF MARANA SENIOR PICNIC SEPTEMBER 23, 2013

By Jim Sanchez

The Town of Marana asked me (Jim Sanchez) if we could have a couple of

players come and play bluegrass music for the senior picnic. Well since the

Town has been really good to us by letting us use the community center/senior

center I decided to put together more and just a few jammers. The above list

are the jammers who attended and had a great time playing for them even

taking some requests. We also enjoyed the fried chicken lunch provided!! Klyle

Would you like your services, band, and or concerts listed on our website (www.desertbluegrass.org)? Current DBA members can be listed by sending their contact information to Andy MacLeod at [email protected]. Refer to the 'Links' tab on the homepage for the bands and instructors. For band concert information I will do my best to get your listing posted in a timely manner onto the 'Events - Concerts' tab. Please send me plain text with the details for the webpage. UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA JAM

Continued on Page 11

Editor’s Note: On October 21st the DBA held a jam on the U of A campus. Many thanks go to Paul Simpson for taking the lead role in making this jam happen. It is the first of many (I hope). Thanks to all the DBAers that showed up and participated. I wandered around the folks listening to the outstanding picking, passing out flyers specially prepared to entice folks to join the DBA and participate in our workshops and jams. I also took the fol-lowing photographs of the event.

JACK'S LAST JAM (There’s a bluegrass song in there somewhere.)

Jack McMeekin picked at his last DBA jam at Thirsty's. Banjo picking Jack is a long-time DBA member who, for many years, has been a snowbird from Canada. He and Helga have sold their Voyager digs and will be returning to Canada to live full-time. Over the years Jack has contributed articles for the newsletter, organized DBA fundraising concerts at the Voyager, coordinated the workshops at our fall festivals and enjoyed picking with us at more jams than we can count. Many of Jack's friends attended the Thirsty Jam to bid him farewell and to wish him well. In this picture, Jack is performing his signature tune "Javalina Breakdown" with Geoff Fox and Bonnie Lohman. (Jack is the good looking dude on the left.) Safe travels Jack - we will miss you.

VOLUME 22 ISSUE 4 PAGE 22 GRASS CLIPPINGS

There is nothing more appealing to me than sibling harmonies. I was fortunate enough to see Allan and Rick Spinney at house concert in Ellsworth, Maine several year ago. Influenced by the original bluegrass masters, like Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, they developed a sound that is southern and traditional, even though they are from the Great Canadian province of Nova Scotia. As I spend the summer months in Maine, and that happens to be when the bluegrass festivals occur, I have been privileged to enjoy many Canadian Bluegrass bands. The Spinneys are among the best!

Not only are their harmonies wonderful and their songs great to listen to, but they also have delightful personalities, so you are charmed by these guys in between the songs.

Gary Dalrymple is on mandolin and fiddle and has been part of the band since 1993, always sounding really fine!

Terry Poirier play bass. Terry has been in bluegrass since he was 5 years old, is a D.J., an audio engineer and a webmaster for worldwidebluegrass.org.

Special guests on this album are Ron Stewart playing fiddle on a song called "Home" and Rob Ickes is playing dobro.

Alan Spinney plays guitar. Rick spinney plays the banjo, but they share lead and harmony singing, making for an interesting change of vocals.

Now that we have the internet to sample music that interests us, I really don't need to list all the songs, but I will describe this album as being filled with songs that are simple in the old country way, but interesting and written from the heart. They are easy to relate to and easy to play, if you are inclined to play along and maybe learn some pure bluegrass like we heard it in the olden days!!! Most of the songs are written by others than the Spinneys, but it is a fine band that takes the songs and makes them all theirs, and that's what happens when you hear the Spinney Brothers Band.

You'll love them in person and find this a wonderful album!

Hope to see you all soon in the Old Pueblo,

Marilyn
