GRASS CLIPPINGS
Thank you all who came and participated in our 2019 festival. It was a great
weekend with beautiful and great music. This year we moved the dates up
to March for several reasons. The Folk Festival moved their dates up to the
first of April instead of the first of May, we felt that having our festival
immediately following that would diminish our attendance. We also felt that
we would still have more winter visitors in the area. On the first day of
campers arriving it was nice to see some Washington and Oregon license
plates. We kicked off Thursday night with a really good jam. Friday was
busy with the arrival of vendors and volunteers to set up the booths, and get
the afternoon show going.
We had 3 well received singer/songwriters perform, Ky Burt, John Hall and
Wally Lawder. That evening there were several jams going on. (Stayed up
too late!!) Saturday morning the campground was filling up with many
enthusiastic grinners ready for a full day of great music. This years line up
did not include a regional or national headliner but the quality of the local
bands were top notch and many attendees commented that they enjoyed
the performances. Just as bluegrass is a mixture of several music genres to
create one unique genre, Tucson is a hotbed of lots of great types of music
and we try to incorporate that into our line up. Again many jams (more
than I have noticed in the past few years) kicked off after dinner. One of
the reasons there were several jams was due to four or five bass players
camping. Go bass players!!!! (. . . Continued on Page 3 )

GREETINGS FELLOW BLUEGRASS LOVERS By Dave Polston
Ky Burt gave an in depth song writing workshop, Peter
McLaughlin gave a guitar workshop and Dick Brown
gave a banjo workshop. All free to the
attendees. Sunday night after tearing down and
packing up, we had one more spectacular
campground jam to end the weekend!!!!
David Lanham and Jeff Collins did an outstanding job
preparing for the event, lining up the bands and
working with the Town of Marana coordinating all the
details. Thank you guys!!!
Holly Tripp as usual did a great job finding us sponsors and coordinating the
silent auction and many other things too numerous to mention here. Dale
Vickroy worked many hours updating the website and coordinating the
paypal system to bring us into the 21st century technical world!! Thank you!!
Jim Wagner, Sean Babb, Paul Deo, Daniel Bieg and Marlene Simpson were
just a few of the many volunteers who worked hard to make this a successful
festival. As usual Old Blue Sound did a great job making sure the musicians
sounded their best. Mike Headrick was our festival photographer and there
will be a slide show of photos from this years festival on our website very
soon.
So to recap it, if you missed it, you missed a great weekend. Make plans for
next year. Stay tuned for announcement of dates for next year. Oh yea, we
actually made a few bucks!!!!!
(. . . Continued from Page 1)
Hi Bluegrass Fans,
It is the time of year when we ask our members to check the expiration date
of their DBA memberships and renew their memberships if needed. In the
Desert Bluegrass Association, we use a common expiration date. All
expirations for the year occur on March 1st. The advantage of this
approach is that we can focus on membership renewals once per year.
This year we are introducing a new option: you can renew for 3 years for
only $50. The 3 year option has real benefits. First you save $10 which is a
17% reduction. Second you save time by only having to deal with renewals
every 3 years. Third, we save time in processing renewals and reminding
you to renew. So we all have more time to enjoy Bluegrass Music. That is a
real win-win. Of course, you can still renew yearly for $20 per year if you
prefer.
So take a minute and see if you need to renew. If you received your
newsletter electronically, check the e-mail for your expiration date. If you
received this newsletter via postal mail, check the mailing label. If it says
“expires 2-19” above your name, then your membership needs to be
renewed. You may renew either by mail or from our website. To renew by
mail simply fill out the form in the newsletter, enclose a check made out to
DBA, then mail it to the address listed. If your information is current, you
don’t even need to fill out the form - just include the mailing address with
your payment. To renew from the website, go to www.desertbluegrass.org,
look for the “join DBA” area, click the “buy now” button and follow the
instructions. Either way is simple and easy.
The DBA promotes and preserves Bluegrass Music in so many ways. Think of
the workshops, the jams, the festival, the clinics, the website, the newsletter,
the directory, the youth scholarships and more. All of this happens because
of two things: First, the hard work of incredible volunteers and second, your
memberships which provide needed funds. So renew today
and keep supporting Bluegrass Music in Southern Arizona.
Thanks

Join us as Camp Bluegrass 2019 celebrates the music of the Carter Family, July 14-19, 2019.
Camp Bluegrass is a one-week residential picking camp for bluegrass musicians. It is held each July at South
Plains College in Levelland, Texas located 30 miles West of Lubbock. Campers stay in dorms on campus or in
conveniently located RV sites. Motels are also available in town. Food service is provided in the SPC
cafeteria.
Our specialty is quality teaching and small classes in state of the art facilities. The faculty includes some of
the best instructors anywhere. Several SPC teachers are on the staff. Classes are held in the Commercial
Music building with nightly faculty concerts in the Tom T. Hall Production Studio.
Over half of our students return every year. Come join the family.

On Saturday March 30, the Desert Bluegrass Association in partnership with SAACA (Southern Arizona Arts and
Cultural Alliance) held our first annual acoustic band competition. Matt Rolland and I met to brainstorm on
how to bring all the different music genres and associations together. After a throwing out different ideas we
came up with the band contest. Unlike many band contest, which only gives a band 10 minutes to do 3
songs, we felt a better concept would be giving each band a full set to show all the different elements it takes
to be a complete band. The first step was narrowing down the field to 5 bands for the final competition. The
contest was open to a wide range of acoustic music-Bluegrass, Old-time, Celtic, Western, Folk, Americana,
Newgrass, Mariachi, Flamenco, Swing and other acoustic traditions. The preliminary round saw 8 bands enter.
We (4 judges) looked at the following to rank the bands, audio files, video files, website development, social
media, amount of performing the band is doing, etc. We selected the following 5 bands.
Southern Comfort Band, (Old time country and bluegrass music)
Copper Wren, (Old time fiddle, bluegrass, gypsy jazz and classical styles)
Nick and Luke, (americana rooted original music, jazz standards and old time/bluegrass)
Grupo Riken, (Carribean and Latin American folkloric music)
Fair Black Rose, (Folk and Bluegrass with a hint of gospel)
The contest was held in conjunction with the SAACA spring Arts Festival located at Oro Valley Market place.
Each of the 5 finalist performed on a professional stage with top notch sound provided by Old Blue Sound.
SAACA did an outstanding job providing the stage, sound and $700 in prize money. The also supplied a
professional photographer so each band could have updated photos to add to the website or facebook
page.
I emceed the days events with Dale Vickroy volunteering to manage the green room and back stage set up.
The 3 judges were Duncan Hudson (KXCI Radio Music Director), Susan Holden (Rhythm and Roots Concert
promotion) and Rudy Mamula (Musician and Band Leader, Past President of DBA).
The following criteria was used in judging the bands. Material Selection-25%, Stage Presence-25%, General
Instumental Musicianship-20%, Vocal Performance-20%, Audience Response-10%.
At the end of the day, we had 5 great bands and the judging was tight. They all deserved to be winners, but
when it was all tallied up we had the following winners.
3rd Place- Nick and Luke $100
2nd Place- Grupo Riken $200
1st Place-Copper Wren $400 and a spot in next years Marana Bluegrass festival.
Thank you to all the bands that entered. Thank you Matt Rolland and SAACA for all the hard work in putting
this together. We are excited to continue this tradition. So get your band together and start planning for next
year!!

The Hard Road Trio Returns: With Workshops and Concert By Marshal Vest
Last October, the Trio presented a marvelous harmony-singing workshop and a fabulous house concert. Both
were very well attended, but many in our community didn’t get to attend. For those who missed out, here’s
your chance to see one of the finest bands in the Southwest. And for those who did, they have new offerings
for you. You don’t want to miss out!
Monday, April 8, at 5:15, you can attend one of three concurrent workshops: Anne on bass, Steve on Mando,
and Chris focusing on songwriting! Each lasts one hour and costs $20. Please register by sending email to
Then at 6:45, the Trio will launch the evening with a workshop focused on harmony singing and groove. A
highly participatory session is promised so BRING YOUR VOICES! (other instruments not needed). They will
then transition seamlessly into a concert featuring songs from their new CD. (Yes, CDs will be available for
purchase). Spouses, family members, and friends will enjoy the evening of great music, so bring ‘em! The
session concludes at 8:45. The cost for this two hour session is only $15 !!! Cash appreciated, at the door.
Registration not required.
The evening replaces the normal Monday night eastside workshop and will be held at the Christ Community
Church, 530 S. Pantano Road, site of DBA’s regular Monday night workshops. Tuesday night Marana-
workshop-attendees should come as well, as Dave deserves a night off on Tuesday.
Biographical information on the Hard Road Trio is summarized as follows: Life-long musicians Steve Smith
(vocals, mandolin, mandola and guitar) and Chris Sanders (vocals and guitar) have captured audiences across
the country with the depth of their songwriting and the power of their distinctive voices. “Along with the
exciting groove of Anne Luna (bass and vocals) who has appeared with April Verch, Spring Creek Bluegrass
and recorded with Kenny Maines and Alan Munde, they have created a sound that delights audiences world-
wide.” They aren’t strangers to Tucson, having appeared at DBA festivals, house concerts, and workshops.
They’ve also appeared at Pickin’ in the Pines, Bighorn Mountain Festival, Swallow Hill in Denver, Durango
Bluegrass Meltdown, Black Rose Acoustic Society, Wildflower Concerts, Albuquerque Folkfest, Berkeley’s
Freight and Salvage, Rice Festival, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass as well as an official showcase at FAR West in
Oct. ’12.
Steve, Chris and Anne also are in demand as teachers and clinicians at camps such as our favorite Camp
Bluegrass, Hill Country Acoustic Music Camp, California Coast Music Camp, Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp, and
Zoukfest. They also have their own camps (one for songwriting and another for acoustic music featuring all
instruments) at the Black Range Lodge in Kingston, New Mexico.

Membership Renewal Reminder
Hi Bluegrass Fans,
In the last issue of Grass Clippings, I asked you to check the expiration date of your
memberships and renew their memberships if needed. The Desert Bluegrass Association
uses common expiration date. All expirations for the year occur at the end of February.
Thanks to everyone who renewed. However, many have yet to renew. So, take a minute
and see if you still need to renew. If you received your Grass Clippings electronically then
the e-mail will indicate your membership status. If you received your Grass Clippings in the
mail, check the mailing label on this newsletter. If it says “expires 2-19” above your name,
then your membership needs to be renewed. You may renew either by mail or from our
website. To renew by mail simply fill out the form in the newsletter, enclose a check made
out to DBA, then mail it to the address listed. If your information is current, you don’t even
need to fill out the form - just include the mailing address with your payment. To renew
from the website go to www.desertbluegrass.org, look for the “join DBA” area, click the
“buy now” button and follow the instructions. Either way is simple and easy.
