Graphology FAQ's

:KDW LV *UDSKRORJ\"

Graphology or Handwriting Analysis is a science of interpreting a person's character from his/her personal handwriting. The study of handwriting is based on a general styleof writing, the formation of letters, the alignment and space between words and lines etc.Through this study, we can get an idea of a person's character, mentality and attitudetowards a particular field of profession and much more.

Unde rsta ndin g Graphology : Y our handwriting develops right from childhood. Whenyou write, your pen is under the control of the muscles of your fingers, hands and arm.All these body parts are under the control of your mind. The manner in which the words

are eventually formed by the pen must bear a direct relationship to the mind that guidestheir formation. Each vibration of movement is unconsciously directed by the brain, sowe can judge the mental state of the writer. It is a guide to the will power, intellect andemotions of a person.

Coupled with psychology and knowledge of human behaviour, it can be used for manyvaried purposes. For example, Recruitment, Marriage compatibility, Career Guidance,Motivate workers, Child development... etc.

In a strict sense ... No, but in reality ... Not really No. Graphology is an art/science of interpretation. It may associate a certain handwriting to a particular behavioral or

personality traits. Example: A Right slant implies extrovert. But it can't say any thing beyond that. Whether an extrovert may be successful in future is unknown.

But if someone is able to prove that an extrovert has a significantly better chance

of being successful in future, then we may deduce from handwriting the potential of a person with a right slant. Usage of Graphology for recruitment of key personnel usessimilar assumption.

r esult . Distortion of the result due to the subject's knowledge that he/she is beinganalyzed is common in most Question-&-Answer type of personality analysis tools. Some tools may claims to have better precision, but since a person is growing andchanging dynamically every second, high precision is not really helpful. It's better to usegraphology to analyze the handwriting of a pure untainted subject, rather than to put thesubject under unnatural stress of a long questionnaire.

Secondly, a single personality questionnaire may reveal a single dimension of personality. But two handwriting samples of the same person at different occasion mayreveals different behaviour characteristics.

O ur Handwriting is like our face, our speech and action. A stroke of writing that showsfriendly traits is like a smile on the face. A person who normally writes illegibly but willwrite clearly when he or she is aware that someone important is going to read it; is likesomeone who is sloppy at home but dress nicely when going to a formal dinner. O ur handwriting, like our face or body language, changes with our moods. Some people arereally too temperamental to be predictable. But every one has got some part of him or her that is hard to change, even if he is temperamental.

A conscious effort to make handwriting more legible is a sign of wanting tocommunicate. Legibility is about making sure people can read your writing . And you

would be viewed as willing to make clear communication. People who communicateclearly would probably be honest. That's a positive side. O n the other hand, the changefor better legibility might be intepreted as a 'conforming' act. The society mightencourage communication or nice looking, neat handwriting. There is nothing bad aboutconforming. But sometime it could be viewed as a loss of originality. The person whoasked this question actually agrees that the change has resulted in better clarity in hiscommunication.

The information such as handedness, age and gender are required generally for record purposes and to aid in future research. It is also because graphology generally can notdetermine for sure about a person's handedness, age and gender. A person may be a male

but has personality that has been stereo typed by the particular society to be feminine. An old man may be young at heart, and a young person may be comparatively maturefor her real age.

Y ou can't unless you are a very good actor, but even good actors may gettired. Someone who tries to forge a handwriting has to fight against his own stamina. Sowhen he gets too tensed up or too tired, he quickly reveals his true self. It is common

place for us to change the style of our handwriting when expecting to please a certain

reader. Such is a kind of pseudo forgery.

In a more positive interpretation, it is a necessary act of continuous character growth. For example, someone may be by nature an introvert but really liked to be moreextrovert. He may try to appear extrovert. If he succeed he can then be extroverteffortlessly. If he gets tired of the strain to be someone else, he will fail and revert back to his old self. Similarly, someone who wishes to be identified as extrovert by hishandwriting forces himself to writing with a right slant. It's like telling himself constantly of his desire to change. O nce again he may or may not succeed.

Y ou designed your signature and it is your public image. Signature is not the best wayto analyze character from handwriting, for several reasons. First, the signature issometimes illegible and different from the normal handwriting. Second, the lonesignature do not give enough words and letters to help the graphologist in his/her

judgment. But signature samples do have certain advantage. It is easy to collect; eventhrough long period of time. Even for public figures whom you may not have easyaccess of a full sample of handwriting, the signature is next best alternative. Example:Samples of signature from the corporate annual reports. It give a glimpse of what thewriter aspire to be.

Y es, certain signs can change under stress, personal growth, maturity, etc., but the styleor 'personality' of the handwriting will always remain the same - unless the personundergoes a dramatic shift in personality or suffers major physical or neurologicaltrauma.

psychological interpretation and assessment of personality for the purpose of bestexpressing the inherent qualities and skills we each possess. Some graphologists are

trained in psychology or counseling and offer successful formulas for applying theinformation taken from a handwriting analysis to real life situations.

People spend substantial amounts of money each year on enlightenmentworkshops in search of their 'inner self' when an analysis report can literally give it tothem in black and white. Graphology brings to light the unknown/known aspects of a

personality and more importantly, can provide you with a practical method of applyingyour skills, knowledge, experience and unique personality successfully in your life. Why wouldn't you want to fulfill this?

Handwriting analysts only analyse what has been written in a sample when it isnecessary to determine trigger words. The rhythm and shape of a trigger word isinfluenced by the psychological association the writer has with that particular word.

For most people, surprise is an understatement when they learn how much information

can be revealed from a sample of handwriting.

A handwriting analysis typicallydivulges information regarding a person's inner motivations and drives; their emotionalstability; creative direction; mental flexibility; materialistic and intellectual leanings;

psychological neuroses and strengths; as well as the status of their physical health(although no diagnoses can be given unless the graphologist is also a qualifieddoctor). Contrary to popular belief, a handwriting analysis cannot foretell the future, or is it a pseudo-science in the vein of astrology or other such divination tools. It is a

:KDW HOHPHQWV HQKDQFHV JUDSKRORJ\ V REMHFWLYLW\ DV D SHUVRQDOThe following elements enhances graphology's objectivity as a personality test:

y Subject is not aware of being tested.y Independent of subject's background and physical appearance.y Independent of personal disclosures, unobtrusive. y

Repeatability of the written specimen.

y The act of writing maintains a "newness" each and every time. y Independent of where the test was taken or specimen written. The assumption is

made that the speciman was generated in a non-moving comfortable sitting position.

y Impossible to forge and significantly alter test without detection. y Cannot significantly distort writing or know how to maintain a false impression. y Quantitative measurements for the graphic stroke-structure operational definition.y O perational definitions repeatable and reliable. y Absence of test giver and his influence.y Absence of testing clues as to what answers are desired. y Separation of test administration and operational definition measurements. y Separation of operational definition measurements and personality evaluation. y Separation of personality evaluation from subject's influence.

y Descriptive analysis that does not require knowledge to past root causes or to personality models for evaluation.

y Test validity- can predict behavior with its or any personality test inherentlimitations.

y V iew the macrocosmic personality from the individual microcosmic characteristictraits.

y Meets all the conditions for a projective personality test.

, V JUDSKRORJ\ LV D SUDFWLFDO DQG DQ HFRQRPLFDO SHUVRQDOLW\ WHVGraphology is a practical and an economical personality test for the following reasons:

y Minimum effort and only a few minutes for a subject to prepare a writtenspecimen.

y The visual writing is a clearly identifiable form of an expressive movement and probably the most accessible.

y Simple test conditions and tools that only require a comfortable sitting position,

table top, writer's choice of pen or writing instrument, and unlined paper.y Universal test that can be used with respect to special needs or situations such as

vocational placement, compatibility assessment, forensic identification, andcomprehensive personality description.

y Adaptable to experimental studies and is especially useful for measuring theaffects of before, during, and after administrating controlled conditions such asdrugs or hypnosis.

y No training required by tester.y Little training and minimum direction required by the subject, other than knowing

how to write and how to generate a written specimen. Normally by the age of ten,a child has mastered the ability to write and is familiar with an alphabet model.y Simplified personality assessment test in terms of time, means, location,

availability, training, education, cross disciplines, and background information.y The written specimen is a permanent record.y The written specimen is a simplified record of expressive movements compared to

most gestures. For example to permanently capture a speech, voice, hand, or facialgesture requires a movie camera and is time consuming to examine.

y Test data and analyzed results are conveniently stored, cataloged, and copied

either electronically or with paper.y Easy to obtain previous history from past specimens for current assessment e.g.-the onset of the affects of an illness, disease, drugs, age, fatigue, traumaticexperience, and situation anxiety. Personality changes of historical figures can beobserved.

y No direct contact required for testee, tester, and examiner.y Longitudinal studies can be performed retroactively.

y Can utilize only operational definitions. Can easily establish group norms from thegraphic stroke-structure measurements.

y The testing situation is not limited in duration such as during an interview or attending an exam. A specimen can be collected at any convenient time.

y The same unaltered raw data test specimen or test results can be analyzed by teamof experts.

y Analyzed and re-analyzed at any time.y If test is questioned during execution (e.g.- an external disturbance or

interruption), it is easy to repeat test without loss of information.y Can perform follow-up studies using same test method.y Adaptable to standard statistical analysis and computer utilization.y A protractor-ruler and a 20X magnifier are the suggested examiner's tools. A high

resolution scanner and an electronic writing pad or tablet with a 0.2 mmresolution, one gram pressure sensitivity, and a 100 Hz sample speed can behelpful for special evaluations.

y Efficient method of an objective self-evaluation for self-improvement. No oneelse needs to be involved. Can analyze self in stages. The intimate knowledge of others is dangerous, but can lead to understanding and then acceptance and/or adjustment.

y A simple method to change personality by practicing graphic formations tomodify their associated behavioral traits.

y Flexible for comparison to other psychological tests.y Adaptable to different personality models.
