Types of Graphics
There are two main types of graphics:
1. Bitmap
2. Vector
3
Bitmap Graphics
• Bitmap graphics are made up of pixels of different colours.
• Pixels are small dots that make up a graphic.
• When you take a photograph using a digital camera or scan an image from a magazine, you are creating a bitmap graphic.

Advantages/Disadvantages of Bitmap Graphics
Advantages • A bitmap graphic is
composed of many tiny parts, called pixels, which are often many different colours.
• It is possible to edit each individual pixel.
Disadvantages • Since the computer
has to store information about every single pixel in the image, the file size of a bitmap graphic is often quite large.
• When you resize a bitmap graphic, it tends to lose quality.
7
Vector Graphics
• Made up of objects. • It is possible to edit each
object separately, for example, change the shape, colour, size and position.
• Even if an object is quite large, it doesn't need a lot of computer memory and therefore the file size is very small.
• You can resize object without losing quality.
• Used to create logos and graphic designs.

Vector Graphics (Advantages and Disadvantages)
Advantages • Edit each object
separately, for example, change the shape, colour, size and position.
• A large object will not require a lot of computer memory (small file size).
• When you resize images, they do not lose quality.
Disadvantages • You cannot edit
individual pixels. • Lots of layered
objects will require a lot of storage space.
• Graphics have a flat perspective and only suited to creating logos, cartoons, diagrams and simple illustrations.

Comparison of Bitmap and Vector Graphics
Bitmap graphics Vector graphics
What are they
made up of?
Pixels of different colours Objects
What can be
edited?
Individual pixels Individual objects
Is the file size
big or small?
Large, as the computer stores
details of every pixel
Small, as the computer stores
details of objects, which do not
require much memory
What happens
when they are
resized?
They lose quality They do not lose quality
How real do
they look?
Real Not real (many of them look like
cartoon images)
Common file
formats
