Graphic Novel Terms• Panel – the story is
told through a series of panels that contain bits of information. Each panel represents a single moment in time
![Page 5: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Terms cont.
• Transitions – The space between panels is the ‘gutter’. Panels transition from left to right and/or top to bottom.

Perspective• The angle in which we
view the picture.• It is the reader’s point
of view such as looking down from above, or looking up at a subject.
• Changing perspective is a technique that the author uses to maintain visual interest and for specific effects

Visual Language
• Just like picture books, graphic novels use a variety of visual language techniques to highlight ideas and themes
![Page 11: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Size of Object• The size of an object creates meaning
within an image• A large object suggests the idea of power,
importance, significance.• Page 60 – What is the large image and
why is it significant?• A small object suggests insignificance
powerless, unimportant etc.• Page 47- What is the small image and
what message does it create?

Visual LanguageLayoutThe way in which panels are placed
on a page for effect Framing This involves techniques such as
shot type, angle, vectors
![Page 13: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Shot Type • Involves shots such as long shot,
mid shot or close-up • Creates a sense of distance
between viewer (reader) and the subject (character)
• Find an example of each shot type in “The Odyssey”
![Page 14: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Angles
• The use of perspective to position the viewer in relation to the subject
• Involves low, high and eye level angles
• Find an example of each from “The Odyssey”
![Page 15: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Vectors
• Lines that direct our eyes to an important subject or image
• Page 85 of “The Odyssey”. What are the lines drawing our attention to and why do you think this vector has been used?
![Page 16: Graphic Novels. What are they? A mixture of narrative, picture books and comic strips Both the pictures AND the text combine to tell the story "a fictional.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062809/56649ed25503460f94be148b/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
