The GNs I discuss are Salem Hyde by Frank Cammuso, Hazardous Tales by Nathan Hale, and El Deafo by Cece Bell as well as the illustrated novel The Army of Frogs by Trevor Pryce. To help the reader get to know Salem and the other characters, Frank Cammusowrites “Getting to Know . . .” facts about Salem and other main characters.

Pick a character from the Salem Hyde series that doesn’t have a “Getting to know” box and write one for him or her.

What if Whammy wrote Salem’s “Getting to know Salem Hyde,” or what if Salem wrote Whammy’s? Rewrite the “Getting to know” of each character from another character’s point of view.

The author wrote a “Getting to know “ about himself to help you get to know him. Write one about yourself.

Before writing a story, complete “Getting to know “ facts about each of your characters to help develop their personality before you begin writing.

On page 60, Cece shares an analogy of her friendship with Laura. She feels like a baited fish that is caught on Laura’s hook.

What analogies could we make to describe Cece’s friendship with Ginny? Martha? Emma?

Cece’s first teacher, Miss Dorn, was compared to Snow White, and Laura was compared to Narnia’s Snow Queen. How are they each like these characters? Who could you compare your teacher to? Why? What about your friends? Parents? Write similes comparing people in your life to literary characters, inanimate objects, or animals. (pages 28, 65)

Which of the two characters do you agree with? Why? Use evidence from the text to back up your opinion.

This prompt could be used to set up a debate in class as well.
