Haunted Victoria: Experience the

Ghostly Side of the City

Ghostly Walks is Victoria’s classic ghost tour, exploring the haunted alleys and courtyards of Victoria’s Old Town. Until October 18 these popular 90-minute walks begin nightly at 7:30, with extra 9:30 tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Tours start at the Visitor Centre. Special Halloween tours take place nightly from October 19 to 31 at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30pm in the lobby of the Bedford Regency Hotel. No reservations needed, get there early to get your spot. Call 250-384-6698 or check www.discoverthepast.com for details.

Ross Bay Cemetery is a beautiful ocean-side Victorian cemetery where phantoms roam. Isabella Ross, once owner of the land, sits forlornly looking out to sea; David Fee, murdered one Christmas Eve, appears as white mist. The Old Cemeteries Society hosts tours each Sunday at 2pm and the annual Ghost Tour is 1 to 3pm October 28. No reservations needed. Call 250-598-8870 for more information.

The Maritime Museum is the favourite haunt of Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, the “hanging judge.” Dominating Bastion Square, many consider it Victoria’s most haunted place. The museum is open 10am to 5pm daily during September and October,

with extended hours to 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in September. Ghost Tours will be held October 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 6pm. Call 250-385-4222, ext. 113 for reservations.

Ghost expert John Adams leads Ghost Bus tours – two-hour coach tours past Victoria’s most haunted places – October 21, 22, 28, 29 and 30 at 6:30 and 9pm. The Old Cemeteries Society has run these popular tours for 18 years, with a different route and new ghost stories each year. Check out www.discoverthepast.com or call 250-384-6698 for tickets and information.

Colwood Haunted Bus Tour with John Adams runs October 4, 5 and 6. The two-hour route will include visits to the Pioneer Cemetery, St. John’s Church, Hatley Castle and “Havenwood.” Tickets and information are available through the City of Colwood, 250-478-5999.

Haunted Horse-drawn Trolley Tours venture down dark streets in the most haunted city on the West Coast. Victoria Carriage Tours offer daily tours in September and October, but have a special ghost tour at the end of October. Call 250-383-2207 for information and reservations.

From mid-October through October 31, Festival of Fear at Galey Farms includes the Corn Maze of Horror, Crazy Train, Madame Isabella’s and Carnevil, nightly from 6 to 10 pm. Check www.galeyfarms.net or call 250-477-5713 for details.

Paranormal Investigations are not ghost tours, but real ghost hunts conducted by a team of mediums. These late night events (10pm to 3am) are held mostly in the dark, with events planned September 22 at St. Ann’s Academy and October 20 at the Maritime Museum. Numbers are limited. Check out www.beyondbeliefparanormalevents.com for details.

St. Ann’s Academy is a former convent school. The grounds (open daily) feature a walled orchard, woodland walk and beautiful Novitiate Garden. The restored chapel is open Thursday to Sunday, 1 to 4pm. On October 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7pm, Voices from the Past explores life, death and unexplained phenomena at this 153-year-old historic site. Call 250-953-8828.

Haunted Places to Visit On Your Own

To explore for ghosts on your own at any time, start downtown in several Old

Town shops, such as Rogers Chocolates and Old Morris Tobacconists. Tourism Victoria can also provide names of haunted restau-rants, bars, hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Market Square, once the centre of Victoria’s red-light district, is now a restored enclave of heritage shops on trendy Johnson Street. Here the ghost of Charlie Kincaid wanders restlessly where his throat was slit by his girlfriend, Belle Adams, whose ghost often appears, then suddenly vanishes.

The majestic Parliament Buildings have many ghosts, notably Francis Mawson Rattenbury, the architect who designed them in the 1890s. He was murdered in England by his wife’s lover, but has returned to haunt the building that made him famous. Beneath majestic trees and crumbling tombstones at the Old Burying Ground on Quadra at Meares Street lie 1,300 bodies. The spectres of Adelaide Griffin who died in 1861 and “Soap and Water” Johnson who committed suicide in 1871 often glide among the graves.

Chinatown has many supernatural stories. Its secret tunnels are only myths, but its haunt-ings are very real. Feel the paranormal energy in Fan Tan Alley as you walk past its aban-doned opium dens and gambling halls.

The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive is haunted by Doris Gravlin, strangled there by her husband in 1936. She appears as a white figure on the fairways, running quickly toward people and sometimes passing right through cars.

Victoria is a popular destination for ghost hunters and anyone who enjoys a good ghost story. It’s the most haunted city in BC and paranormal activities take place year-round, but as Halloween draws near

many of the city’s “spirited” attractions offer special programs for the annual Ghosts of Victoria Festival. Here, we offer a list of 16 great places to experience the haunted side of the city.

Ghosts are John Adams’ specialty on his Ghostly Walks

Ghost Tours are a great way to hear of the unknown stories Victoria has to offer.

BC Legislative BuildingsThe BC Legislative Buildings , designed by renowned architect Fransic Rattenbury in the 1890s, dominate the architectural landscape of Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Gold and silver leaf, murals, ornate plaster details and wood mouldings ornament the richly-hued walls and ceilings. Visitors also encounter solid marble columns, statuary, stained glass as well as unique architectural flourishes. Be sure to take some time to appreciate the beauty of the grounds, which feature flower gardens, fountains, statues and exhilarating views of the harbour and mountains. Free guided tours are availible 7 days a week in summer, and Monday to Friday the rest of the year. The BC Legislative Buildings are located within easy walking distance of downtown Victoria.

Fairmont Empress HotelArchitect Francis Rattenbury tended to blend architectural styles in his buildings; the Empress, built in 1908, was no exception. Domed polygon turrets draw on classical influences, while Tudor arches in the lobby give that part of the hotel an Elizabethan feel. The picturesque broken roofline is dotted with Gothic dormers, while the hundreds of guest rooms are decorated in Edwardian-Victorian vintage style.

Christ Church CathedralChrist Church Cathedral is the Episcopal seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of British Columbia. Built in the Gothic style between 1926 and 1929, the church is faced with rusticated sandstone, granite and moulded “art stone.” Two square towers of equal height flank a 26-m/85-ft Gothic arch and rose window. Inside, a vaulted ceiling soars 20m/80ft above floors of marble and red tile. Take note of the pulpit, which was carved from a 500-year-old oak! For an unexpected stylistic twist, sneak a peek at the modernist stained glass windows in the upstairs Chapel of New Jerusalem. The cathedral is one of the last churches in Canada with real bells. They chime every Sunday to call parishioners to worship. Staff on site provide information to visitors. Christ Church Cathedral is located in downtown Victoria.

St. Andrew’s Cathedral St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the mother church of the Diocese of Victoria, was built in 1892 to a design inspired by the medieval cathedrals of Europe. Its 22-m/72-ft facade features asymmetric, sharply tapered bell towers as well as a colourful array of red brick, stone and slate. While the interior architecture is typical of late Gothic Revival style, a few of the elements of this church are surprising. The altar and lectern, for example, were designed by First Nations artists. They feature colourful Christian religious themes rendered in the artistic style of BC’s native peoples. St. Andrew’s Cathedral is located in downtown Victoria.

Bastion SquareThe site of the old Hudson’s Bay Company trading post that gave rise to present-day Victoria, Bastion Square is a place of special significance to Victorians. Because of its old-world charm and open views of the Inner Harbour, the Square is

a popular spot for outdoor dining, strolling and resting. Visit the old Provincial Supreme Court building, now the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, or simply walk around and enjoy the square’s unique features, such as the ceremonial entry arch at View Street and Government or the floorscape mosaic at the foot of the staircase linking the square with Wharf Street. Bastion Square lies between downtown Victoria and the Inner Harbour, an easy walking distance of both.

Craigdarroch CastleExperience lavish, Edwardian-era luxury at Craigdarroch Castle, the former home of local coal baron, Robert Dunsmuir. Built in the 1890s, its design mixes Jacobean, Scottish Baronial and French Gothic elements. Interesting exterior details include heavy stonework, a castellated roofline and 35

iron-braced chimneys. Inside, Scotch Granite columns, decorative tiling, stained glass, oak staircases and mahogany fireplaces hold their own against the rich furnishings and draperies.

Gate of Harmonious InterestChinese and non-Chinese communities worked together to erect the Gate of Harmonious Interest in 1981. Two inscriptions allude to this cooperative effort: “To work together with one heart” and “To help each other achieve harmony.” The 11.5-m/38-ft ornamental gate was modeled on similar gateways in China and is now the symbolic entrance to Chinatown. It follows the principles of symmetry in its design: a hand-carved stone lion from Suchow, China, stands on either side and art displayed on the gate incorporates many symbols of Yin-Yang equilibrium in nature. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is located in Chinatown, within walking distance of downtown Victoria.

Fan Tan AlleyFan Tan Alley is a curious little street. At its narrowest, it’s only 0.9m/3ft wide and there are still signs of the gambling dens that once existed there. Look for an old peephole in the wall on the right while walking toward Fisgard Street; it was used to screen visitors in the days when the illegal games of mah jong, fan-tan and dominoes were in play day and night and the air inside was heavy with the smoke of opium pipes. The architecture along this 73m/240ft long alley is typical of Edwardian commercial buildings. There are eight contiguous brick buildings in all.Fan Tan Alley is located in Chinatown, within walking distance of downtown Victoria.

As British Columbia’s capital city, Victoria is home to many grand public buildings and structures.Because of its numerous, well-preserved historic buildings and skylines that emphasize church spires instead of office

towers, Victoria has masqueraded as 19th-century England, Paris, Boston and New York City on the silver screen. But Victoria has something those cities lack: the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the area’s Aboriginal peoples. View

totem poles, longhouses and native artwork in locations throughout the city.

Great News comes with a reward.

We all know it's vital to recycle, but sometimes it's tricky to find the time and the place to do it. That's where we come in. Under the WEEE regulations (waste, electrical or electronic equipment) we must take back your old mobiles, accessories and other electrical or electronic equipment for recycling on a like-for-like basis when you buy something from us. We then pass it all on to our recycling team, who find the best use for it.

Recycle and Reward is the Orange service that helps you earn money from your unwanted mobile. Handy if you're looking to save money on a new phone.

Simply visit any of our Orange shops across Canada, or go to Recycle and Reward, and find out how much your phone is worth.

All unwanted phones are processed through our partner, an expert in mobile-phone recycling who tests each device and works out the best use for it, in full compliance with all WEEE regulations (waste, electrical or electronic equipment). If your phone is too old or beyond economical repair, it will be safely recycled, and nothing will end up in landfill.

With Recycle and Reward everyone benefits. You get a cash reward, and absolutely nothing goes to landfill.

This former railway line offers a unique experience. The 57 km trail begins in Victoria and connects with Saanich, View royal, Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, and Sooke. Cyclists, pedestrians, in-line skaters, and horse riders share the trail through urban neighborhoods (paved trail), rolling farmland, into deep forest, and past rocky shoreline. Deer and raccoon, heron and hawk, squirrel and field mouse can also be seen by the watchful eye while on the trail.

The trail is accessible at numerous points along the route (10 km section from Victoria to Colwood is paved). For a map, contact CRD Parks at (250) 478-3344 or at http://www.crd.bc.ca/parks/index.htm
