When people first started to write what is now our alphabet, they began with pictures. Can you believe that the letter “A” started out as the head of a cow-like animal called an ox!

Over a period of time (hundreds of years), people started drawing letters in a very fancy way--illuminated! The artists who drew the letters would often add pictures of animals, plants and people in the letters!
