Jen also mentioned our next Lt. Gov. Jim Janosik received the Distinguished Chair Award for his work on the District Public Relations Committee.
P R O G R A M # 1 -‐ Chief Casey Curtis and Brian Hussey discussing the request for an off the road EM vehicle funding. Chief Curtis talked about his time on Granville Fire Department and the current staffing. There are 10 full time personnel, 20 intermittent, and 15 volunteers including three Denison students who stayed in the area this summer. We have 1900 runs per year. Chief Curtis turned the discussion over to Brian Hussey since he has done the research to determine the need and the type of off the road EM. Vehicle the department is in need of. Brian said there are many ares in the township and village that are not accessible for the larger vehicles they have. With no off the road vehicle they are required to borrow other equipment locally thru Facklers, a 6x6 from the Newark Fire Dept. or other Departments. This equipment is good but they are not as maneuverable or equipped as well as Honda Pioneer 700 vehicle we want to purchase. Some of the areas we serve that are not accessible to larger vehicles are the Bike Path, Denison Bio Reserve, Infirmary Mound Park, Denison Golf Course, Raccoon Creek, Bryn Du Mansion, Wildwood Park, Private Properties, 4th of July Celebration and the Fireworks Show, and other areas where large number of people congregate, etc. In responding to these areas and smaller vehicles are not available they have to access the areas on foot, carrying any equipment and supplies. In the case of a medical emergency, they have to carry their equipment in and out along with the patient. This takes important time from the emergency to either get the patient to the Hospital or to a medical helicopter. Limited access of areas for example includes, the Infirmary

Monday News page 2 of 2 PROGRAM cont. Mound with 7 miles of unpaved trails for horses, hiking and camping areas. Access to the cross-‐country meets at the Bryn Du Mansion with the hills, the bike path is narrow and access is limited, etc. The Honda Pioneer 700 vehicle would seat 4 people and the two rear seats could be folded down to make room for a stretcher. There would be a roof. The Honda has a short turning radius compared to the 6x6 they have borrowed from the NFD. This would not be a vehicle that would be driven on the highway, but would be used on secondary streets and roads. If necessary it could be hauled to a remote site. Questions?
1. Has Funding been requested from Rotary or the Granville Foundation? No we are coming to Kiwanis only.
2. What is the cost? To buy the vehicle & the needed equipment is $15,000 + a seven ft. Stokes Basket.
3. Does $15,000 cover everything? It covers the vehicle and equipment.
4. Will the vehicle be transported to the site? The vehicle can travel 45 mph. It would use secondary streets and back roads. It could be hauled to the site.
5. Has the proposal been submitted to the trustees? Yes but not for funding.
6. Is there room at the fire station for it? Yes 7. Will it have emergency lights on it? Yes it will have lights
and sirens. There will also be scene lights of low voltage LED lights. An example of the importance of scene lights is; I was called out late at night to search for a person on a 2-‐mile stretch of the bike path with only a flash light. Scene lights would have been helpful to search the sides as well as the path.
8. Will the seats lay flat? Yes they can be laid flat to accommodate a stretcher. However some patients may need to be in a seated position which both could be done.
9. What is the width? It is comparable to a Golf Cart. There are larger Honda vehicles such as the 1,000 with power steering, but the 700 out performs the bigger vehicle.
If the club provides the fire department the funds to purchase this vehicle it would be indicated on the vehicle that the Granville Kiwanis Club purchased it. And on and on it goes to program #2 last but not the least and it is just as important. P R O G R A M # 2 – Lesa Miller -‐ Program Director for the Granville Recreation District. The Wildwood Park playground is 23 years old and needs help, care, & restoration to continue serving our community. Lesa said Jerry went to a meeting in the 90’s and came home and said they would be building a playground. Less and Jerry were in charge of construction. It was a community volunteer effort. The funds from the Pancake Day, which was held in the basement of the Baptist Church (now the United Church of Granville), were donated to
the playground project. There was a large turn out and many people stood in line to get inside to have pancakes. It was a big success. For their work and dedication to the building of the playground Lesa and Jerry were selected to be the Grand Marshals of the 4th of July Parade. Now the facilities are showing signs of deterioration and wear and need to be brought up to ADA and safety code standards. In the original design to satisfy the Reese Foundation there were to be no brilliant colors, which is why wood and stain were the chosen construction products. The playground was made of treated wood and the life of the facility was to be 20yrs. With retreating of the wood on a biannual schedule it has lasted longer than expected. Kiwanis has been an important part in the care and maintenance of the facility. Many materials were donated. The community participated in the physical construction, with many volunteer hours of physical labor. GRD (Granville Recreation District) last year paid for an inspection of the facility to determine what needed to be done to comply with the safety codes. Some safety improvements have been made, such as replacing some handrails. The floorboards are showing a lot of wear and will be replaced with recycled plastic materials, which will provide more wear resistance. Per Leathers and Assoc. who was the designer of the playground, to rebuild in compliance with the safety codes it will cost around $225,000. The framing will not be replaced. To rebuild a totally new design the cost would be around $285,000. The original cost was $100,000. This will be a signature project for the GRD. When the GRD sets the budget for 2017 the items that need immediate attention will be included. To do more it will be necessary to have a community fund raising effort to make the major changes. Once again, the plan is to rebuild the playground as a community effort through donated labor and materials. 5 0 / 5 0 d r a w i n g w i n n e r – Butch Curtis won the jackpot. However, he does not get a free Kiwanis dinner and has to buy a new deck of cards. D i d y o u k n o w ?
