About Grantmakers in the ArtsA national network of private, public, and corporate arts and culture funders, Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) provides leadership and service that advances the use of philanthropic and governmental resources to support the growth of arts and culture. Through conferences, workshops, podcasts, and webinars; publications including the GIA Reader; research and policy work across the field of grantmaking; and digital communication tools on our website and social media; we strive to better inform funding practices and effectively address the urgent needs facing artists, arts educators, and arts and culture organizations in communities across America.

With a diverse member base including private, family, community, and corporate foundations; national, state, and local governmental agencies, and nonprofit national, regional, and local funders and service agencies, GIA is the only national association of private and public funders that make grants to artists and arts organizations in America.

Dear GIA Members and Colleagues,Grantmakers in the Arts presents this report in summary of our 2020, a year marked by the coronavirus pandemic, further highlighting the inequities and violence that disproportionately affect BIPOC communities. Like many other organizations, GIA’s programming looked somewhat different than in previous years.

In 2020, GIA developed entire bodies of new programming, like the COVID-19 Response & Resources page, which includes a blog series, webinars, and podcasts, and the Black Arts & Cultural Funding and Justice Resource Hub, including examples of funding for BIPOC artists and cultural communities, as well as an anti-racist reading list.

As the pandemic put a pause to all in-person workshops and convenings, GIA worked with Rebecca Thomas Associates to bring our Capitalization workshops online, focusing on capitalization during a recession & making them more accessible to more members. We collaborated with cultural strategist Sage Crump to make sure the workshops also explicitly foreground considerations of racial equity as we address issues of capitalization. In our first online convening in November, we were able to highlight the brilliance of Black women as well as how essential it is to work intersectionally, and to foreground disability justice alongside anti-racism.

GIA is grateful that so many of our colleagues have found our work useful during such a difficult time. Thank you to our members, our funding partners, our board of directors, and the members of our team. We look forward to working with you to create the future we all deserve.

Thank you.

Funding Partners are members who choose to make contributions above the amount required by the GIA dues structure.

Funding Partner gifts assist GIA with general operating support as well as designated programs, including the annual conference, the Arts Education Funders Coalition, and information and communication services.

The Leadership Circle is made up of funders making gifts of $10,000 and above. GIA especially acknowledges Funding Partners granting multi-year support. These contributors are essential to the development and sustainability of programs over time.
