Day of pageant guidelines, tips, and reminders

The dressing area is dedicated only for pageant Queens and Contestants. NO parents, friends, family members, or unauthorized personnel will be permitted backstage before or during theevent. Girls are expected to, for the most part, help each other. There will be 4 predeterminedadults backstage during this time to help them, if needed.

Water and light snacks will be provided backstage. To avoid any unfortunate accidents, pleasedo not bring any of your own beverages or snacks. Please NO gum!

It's a very good idea to bring a clothes basket to keep all contestant accessories and changes ofclothes in one, contained spot. Backstage can be a little hectic and nerves can get frayed if anintegral piece of someone's wardrobe goes missing. In your basket, bring some things that will help during the pageant. Items such as extratights/nylons, bobbie pins, hair spray, touch-up make up, band aids, etc.

All of your accessories backstage should be placed in a labeled, Ziploc bag stating which eventit belongs to. If you are specific when labeling, it is very helpful during each change. This willhelp you, the other young ladies, and the 4 women assigned to help.

NO cell phones at all backstage or in the dressing room, Please!

Winners

Once the pageant is over, please stay on stage for photos by area newspapers and, of course, your friends and family. Once the photos are finished, the winners should stay behind for a 5-minute, informal congratulations from the director. 2015 Queens will receive an additionalpacket with a full calendar of your upcoming events. If any parent has any questions regardingthe pageant they may contact Pat McKie at 847-287-5189 on Monday after the pageant is over.

Tips for an Effective Speech

1. Be Prepared - How many times do you practice your speech? Usea tape recorder or videotape yourself. This will help you to get anaccurate picture of how you speak.

2. Give of Yourself- Use personal examples and stories in yourspeech whenever possible. Make sure your stories help to support your point. Thestones must match your message.3. Stay Relaxed - To slay relaxed you should be prepared. Also, focus on yourmessage and not the audience. Use gestures, including walking patterns. Practicethe opening of your speech and plan exactly how you will say it.

4. Use Natural Humor - Don't try to be a stand-up comedian. Use natural humor bypoking fun at yourself and something you said or did. Be sure NOT to make fun ofanyone in the audience. People will laugh with you when you poke fun at yourselfbut don't overdo it.

5. Plan Your Body & Hand Positions - During the practice of your speech look foroccasions where you can use a gesture. Establish three positions where you willstand and practice not only how to move to them but where in your speech do youmove. Pick three positions, one on center stage, one to your right, and one to yourleft. Do not hide behind the lectern. When you do move maintain eye contact withthe audience.

6. Speak slowly - Make sure that you don't speak too fast. The audience and judgeswant to hear what you are saying.

7. SMILE!!!! - It will make all of the difference in the world.
