Who I am
Grant McLeodSenior Applications EngineerPrion Cutting Edge
I have been with Prion Cutting Edge since 2011 and am responsible for SolidEdge support, training and consultancy. My main of expertise is CAE and FEA.
I have extensive knowledge of other CAD/CAE applications including; Femap,NX, Ansys, Plysim, Maxsurf, Autodesk; Inventor, Mech. Desktop, 3ds andAveva.
Before joining Prion Cutting Edge, I worked as a Design and Process Engineerfor a manufacturer of luxury watercraft.
I have degrees in Marine Engineering and Composites Design andManufacture.

We will use the feature library to add in another lug feature – browse to the working folder
Feature library lets us store commonly used features
for re-use at any time
In this example, we have a lug, counterbore hole and some rounding saved as a
feature.

The library geometry has been added as a face set. Right click on this in pathfinder and choose ‘Attach’.

Rotate the cutout faces
Pick this face and then click on the blue orb at the handle origin and move the steering
wheel to the centre of the arc.As before, hovering the pointer over
the edge of the arc will cause the steering wheel to snap to the centre.
Left click to place.

Turn on the Parallel Live Rule
Click into the advanced design
intent button
Turn on the Parallel Live Rule
This will keep the parallel faces together when we move the geometry in the next step. Live Rules preserve our design intent without the need for
extraneous dimensions and relationships.

Rotate the cutout faces
Click on the steering wheel torus
Rotate the face back 5º. Notice how the parallel face moves. Solid Edge also
detects that there is symmetric faces and moves them too. Click to place the face.

Modify the arc cutout
Use Ctrl & T to switch to a top view
Hover the cursor over the face below
Before pressing F3, use the ‘N’ key to align the
crosshairs with the edge shown. The edge will highlight green. Note – you may need to press ‘N’ more than once.
Once aligned, use F3 to lock to the plane.

Cut the sketch region out
Left click to select the region created by the sketch
Extrude the profile down to the keypoint shown. Note – You may
have to change your keypoint filter.

Add additional holes to the model
Pick the line command and use F3 to lock to this face
Start the sketch in line with the centrepoint
Snap the line to the endpoint shown and then press ‘S’. The line will then become symmetric.

Summary
• Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology enables us to work with non-native geometry as if it was created in Solid Edge.
• We can edit, delete, re-use and manipulate this data, often faster than is possible in the native CAD system.
• Synchronous Technology at ST8 is even easier to pick up, this should enable new users to Synchronous to get more productive in even less time.
• Synchronous user controls are simple, intuitive and powerful.
