Moving your body regularly by par-ticipating in physical exercise increases muscle tone, strengthens the heart and lowers risks of high blood pressure. Dr. John Ratey, Harvard Medical School researcher and psychiatrist, studies the connection between physical exercise and brain function.

Ratey, author of “Spark: The Revolution-ary New Science of Exercise and the Brain”, says, “Researchers have studied how exercise affects things like improved memory, academic performance and ex-ecutive function at work.” As we consis-tently find ourselves in stressful careers or lifestyles with many distractions we can find exercise to be a method of stress relief and a way to refocus on day-to-day tasks.

Not only do we as adults live busy lives but our children need to have the ability

to remain focused in learning environ-ments as well. In recent research, exer-cise has been shown to initiate changes in the body that activate more brain cells to connect to each other, increasing the brain’s ability to learn.

So what exercises should you do? Any activity is good, but it is best to give your body a boost by doing activities that raise your heart rate. Walk briskly on a nature trail, do high intensity interval training sessions, or practice Pilates exercises on an exercise ball. Challenge yourself by doing exercises that are a combination of strength and balance. This combination of movements forces the brain to work while you work your muscles. Always remember, have fun. Grab a friend or a loved one and get moving. Besides, what good is having good health if you can’t share your joy with someone else?

Indiana native, Jym Shooz, is hitting the streets - running! The new-est artist on the local music scene has already begun to make his

presence felt.

His first mixtape, Laces Out, was released early August as a prelude to his upcoming album. Laces Out proved to be one of the strongest, lyrical mixtapes to come out of Indianapolis. Fans from all over the midwest have copped the mixtape and are awaiting the first album!

Recent performances include Music Mondays at Cloud 9 where Jym Shooz has been pushing the first single from the album, “Shooz”.

Gas prices, grocery bills, your children’s school book rental…What is that ONE issue that sets you over the edge? Was it the $50 you had to put into your gas tank to get you to your second job? Or, how about when Little Jimmie’s school district sent you a notice to advise that for the 2011-2012 school year, it would cost between $100 -$200 for him to ride the school bus? While these are issues across the entire nation, for many, these issues are most relevant at home.

Choosing between food and Little Jim-mie’s school transportation shouldn’t be an issue. However, it is; and, we undoubtedly must roll with the punches. We hear all the time what politicians feel we should do. We hear their speeches, we see their actions. But if politicians work within our government …where does that leave you – the people? Essentially, the “people” are the government. They are the masses, and the majority. If you have an opinion, a want, or a need, why would you sit silently and allow someone else to make decisions for you? That’s exactly what happens when we don’t vote, don’t volunteer, or don’t donate to a cause. We become engulfed in our own self pity and self preservation. This is not to persuade you to feel one way or another, but it is to persuade you to FEEL. Feel a desire to do more and be more. No one will care

about you and your family more than you do, so why not protect it and help it thrive. If there are issues that get under your skin, speak out, speak up, and do more! No one will ever hear you behind the stares.

COMEDYIt’s the city with the fastest growing population in the country, the original location of Coca-Cola, and the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. That’s right I’m talking about the “ATL” – otherwise known as Atlanta! The only thing grow-ing faster than Atlanta’s population, is the popularity of standup comedian, Squirt. Though he only sizes up at a modest 5’5” he is producing big laughs everywhere he goes.

Antonio Mosley, better known as “Squirt”, began his sprouting comedy career at the age of 19. Being a personal chauffer for comedian cousin, Shawty Shawty, Squirt collected strategies about the comedy profession from his cousin rather than gas money. Formulating his own style of comedy got him enough laughs to land on B.E.T.s Comic View and also earn him the title of Annheiser Bueschs Amatuer Comedian of the Year in 2001.

Within Squirt’s passion for comedy, there lies a desire to bring to sitcoms - featur-ing sketch comedy - back to the main-stream, as he feels television is overrun by reality TV. Currently relocated to Indianapolis and still doing standup, he says, what’s next for him is focusing on getting “bigger”, or shall we say “getting national recognition!”

Though growing a few more inches is probably out of the question, Squirt hopes growing in popularity will take him where he needs to be, and help him get his family situated.

INDIANADOING IT ON A GRAND SCALE

You know the saying, “there’s more than corn, in Indiana?” Well now here’s the proof! GRANDSCALE Magazine is the newest magazine to hit Indianapolis. With a focus on displaying what’s going on here in the city and who’s making it all happen; this magazine is sure to shine a bright light on Indiana.

It all started with Darrell Johnson, owner of Diversity Printing Partners, and Keith Potter, owner of The Real Cut Above barbershop. Darrell and Keith were just two businessmen who realized that to-gether, with their passion and success in business, they could bring something “grand” to Indiana. This vision helped them realize that they finally could put an end to the state’s widespread stereotype that In-diana is nothing but “corn fields.” That’s right! There IS more than corn in Indiana and GRANDSCALE Magazine promises to illuminate between the rows.

GRANDSCALE Magazine, the brain-child of Darrell and Keith, invokes their audience to think on a grander level by pegging the magazine as “a new unit to measure the pulse of city.” Shedding a different kind of light on local culture, communities’ “movers and shakers”, and the nightlife, GRANDSCALE Magazine pinpoints the diversity of Indianapolis

with articles and editorials - not just to inform their readers, but to affect them. By refusing to conform to the standards of most magazines, GRANDSCALE will reach a larger audience with its focus on more encompassing subject mat-ters. Multiple genres of music, political matters, social issues, and the like will set this apart from its competitors. Dar-rell and Keith hope to raise the bar and force other magazines to step up their game. With a talented staff at its disposal, GRANDSCALE will hold its readers captive while they await the next issue each month.

Local business owners – both small and large – would be wise to take advantage of the services provided by GRAND-SCALE magazine. Keith commented, “We really want to be the first option for local businesses to promote their services and products. We want both large and small business owners to look to us to help grow their business.” This magazine will be circulated around the city and to the outskirts of Indianapolis to start – with a future agenda of expanding even further. So reaching the masses will be

no problem for advertisers and promot-ers listed in the magazine. Utilizing this magazine to spread the word about businesses and community functions is a sure way to gain more consumers and participation in local events.

As for the image of Indianapolis, Darrell mentioned, “People outside of Indianapo-lis don’t realize how “grand” this city is. GRANDSCALE Magazine will show what kind of place this really is...how it is to live and raise a family here… and what the nightlife is like here. There isn’t enough positivity being brought to the

forefront about all the things in this city, so that’s what we intend to do with this magazine.” The magazine seems to be right on point when it comes to that.

A prime example is the “Indy’s Who’s Who??” section is where they highlight the “movers and shakers” in the com-munities. “We plan to change how people view Indiana by showcasing different people and events here in the city. And, as long as the subject matter has style, character, and substance, it will be in this magazine,” says Darrell.

So from the cornfields of Indiana, we bring you life on a grander scale. Welcome to GRANDSCALE Magazine!

Everyone loves a “classic”, but here in Indianapolis there is a passion for the “classic” - the Circle City Classic that is! That’s right, it’s that time again! The time where two historically black colleges will go head to head in a game of football for the title of Circle City Classic Champion! This year’s match up will feature the Kentucky State University Thorough-breds clashing it out with the Albany State Golden Rams in the Indianapolis’ own, Lucas Oil Stadium.

The highlight of the Classic is of course the football game, but since the first game in 1984 it has evolved to be so much more. Rev. Charles Williams, who served as president of the Indiana Black Expo, made a realization of his vision of creat-ing one of the most spectacular African American events country wide, all while promoting academic achievement. Enter-ing now into its third decade, and still going strong, the classic now includes a show case of African American culture at its best. Pledging not just to challenge our youth physically but also mentally; to-day’s Classic events include a year round college readiness workshop , a youth football and cheerleading clinic, as well as a scholarship program that continues to nurture the youth for a brighter tomor-row ,having distributed over 2.5 million

dollars in scholarships.

Since its beginnings, the Classic earns no-toriety from the big names that it brings to the Circle City year after year. This year’s post game concert promises to bring fire to Lucas Oil Stadium showcasing hip hop and R& B stars Bow Wow and Monica. Also in the spirit of praise pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson Sr. of Eastern Star Church of the North Campus brings film star Tasha Smith in worship.

All the events that are brought to the Circle City through a celebration of unity and opportunity should prove to be entertaining for all ages. While Lucas Oil Stadium is also hosting the Super Bowl this year with tickets starting out at thou-sands of dollars, the Indianapolis Circle City Classic tickets start out at a generous 10 dollars per person. This event that will cause crowds of numerous backgrounds and Greek fraternities and sororities to flock to the Circle City to say the least should prove to be nothing short of amaz-ing once again!

EVERYONE LOVES A CLASSIC!2011 INDIANAPOLIS CIRCLE CITY CLASSIC

“Don’t push me, Cause I’m close to the edge, I’m trying not to lose my head”. From the sound of Melle Melle’s classic hit The Message, to NWA’s F@#k the Police, Hip-Hop started out as an outlet for inner city teens to have a means to express their discontent with social and economic issues facing their communities. “The Message” featured a grim narrative about inner city violence, drugs, and poverty not known to many outside of that particular community. 20 years later a group of youth from Los Angeles garnered the at-tention of the United States Government with a record titled “F@#ck The Police”. This record detailed various accounts of racial profiling and police brutality amongst the urban youth in South Central Los Angeles. Exercising their First Amendment Right to Freedom of Speech, the group NWA, went on to be one of the most successful rap groups of all time.

Fast forward yet 20 more years and that brings us to Hip-Hop as we now know it. Examine Hip-Hop’s past and present and anyone will notice a stark contrast to where we’ve come from and where we are now. As previously stated when Rap music originated, these kids were rapping because they had a message or a story to tell. They weren’t rapping for

the money, for the cars, or for the lavish life that came along with being an icon. Since the early to late eighties com-mercial interests have invaded and have taken over the world of Hip-Hop and that has created a false ideology of Hip-Hop music and what it represents. That

ideology has been passed on to our youth who know receive a large portion of their education from this system. The truth of the matter is that with the invasion of corporate interests, comes the “Cookie Cutter” formula for success. Record labels and Executives believed that in this formula for success, it’s easy to “Just do what the last successful artist did”. So if you want to sell as many records as Lil Wayne, just dress like Lil Wayne, and rap like Lil Wayne, and here go get tattoos like Lil Wayne has. This formula has led the Recording Industry into the most unprofitable times in its history. The emergence of digital media is also a ma-jor factor in the changing of the guard in what was once one of the most profitable industries in the world.

Is Hip-Hop really dead? Where do we go from here? In my opinion Hip-Hop is truly not dead, nor will it ever die. The legacy left behind by artists such as Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, NWA, Tupac, Notorious Big just to name a few are etched in the sands of time

forever and can never be taken away. The true ques-tion is What will your legacy be? Will you be considered

a rapper or an artist? Will you be an artist or entertainer? In this world of entertain-ment anyone can make a record. Some can even make a Hit Record. However, it takes true grit, dedication and talent to be a Performer to the likes of Michael Jackson, and James Brown. These en-tertainers commanded crowds with their performances, overwhelmed the competi-tion with their massive catalogue’s, and thrilled generations with their longevity. This is the type of commitment to one’s craft that it takes truly be a winner.
