COMING EVENTS

"1SIC DEPARlMENT TO PRESENT nm CtlUSTMAS CONCERTS

Choral and band music will be featured in two Christmas concerts sponsored by the GVSC Music Department on December 2 and 5. The Grand Valley State College Singers, the Seven Centuries Singers, and the Festival Chorale, assisted by instrumental and vocal soloists and ensembles, will perfonn music from the Renaissance to the present in an 8 p.m. concert on Friday, December 2. GVSC's Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and several small ensembles will be featured in an 8 p.m. concert on Monday, December 5.

The GVSC Singers, under the direction of Professor Ellen Pool, will perfonn Gabrielli 's double chorus motet, "Hodie Christus Natus Est," Flor Peeters' "Magnificat," Scarlatti's "Exultate Jubilate," and Walther's familiar "Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine."

The Seven Centuries Singers, also directed by Professor Pool, will sing a group of traditional carols.

Under the direction of Professor Larry W. Edwards, the Festival Chorale will perfonn Warlock's "Three Carols" and the Charpentier cantata, "Song of the Birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ."

Featured instr1111entalists include David 0. Belcher, piano and harpsichord, Jean Schuitman, organ; Randall Mac George, trumpet; and Diane DePeel and Kim Herington, flutes.

vocal solos will be sung by Jean Devries, Patricia Cole, Jack Boeskool, Allan O'Connor, David Mayer, and Susan Bocks.

One of the highlights of the band concert will be a French Horn Choir created especially for the concert. The French hornists will be GVSC students and area high school musicians. Margie Gage, French horn instructor at GVSC and a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, has arranged three Christmas selections for the ensemble.

The Concert Band will play traditional Christmas music as well as "The Joy of Christmas" by Theldon MYers. This new number is based on the "Ashwell Carol," an English adaptation of a Russian folk tune. Long a favorite amongst Christmas songs, the "Sleigh Ride," written by Leroy Anderson, will be perfonned.

The Wind Ensemble, a 40-piece group, will present "Christmas Classics," written by Grand Rapids composer Greg Kerkorian. In addition, the small ensembles slated to perfonn are the Flute Quintet, Brass Choir and the Percussion Ensemble.

Both concerts are free and both will be held in the Louis Armstrong Theatre in Calder Fine Arts Center.

be the topic of a seminar presented by Steven Lankford on Tuesday, November 29. Lankford is a student assistant in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, which is sponsoring the seminar. The presentation will be held at 3 p.m. in room 119, Mackinac Hall.

"1SIC FACULTY MEMBERS TO PRESENT RECITAL

Leslie Eitzen, mezzo soprano, and Julianne VandenWyngaard, pianist, will offer a lunch hour faculty recital on Thursday, December 1, in the Calder Fine Arts Center. Eitzen will perfonn music by French, German, British, and American composers; translations of foreign language songs will be provided. VandenWyngaard will perform Sonata, Opus 1, by Alban Berg and will accompany Eitzen.

Slll>ENTS TO PERFORM IN JOINT RECITAL

Sopranos Leona Spoelman and Eileen Wilson will present a joint senior recital on Sunday, December 4. They will be ac­companied by David 0. Belcher. Both students expect to graduate in the spring of 1984 with Bachelor of Music Education degrees, choral emphasis . The recital will be held at 3 p.m. in the Calder Fine Arts Center.

POLICE OFFICER TO SPEAK AT RAPE PREVENTION SEMINAR

Detroit police officer Gayle S. Orr will speak at a December 1 seminar on rape prevention. The seminar, co-sponsored by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department and Grand Valley's Safety and Security Department, will be held in Kirkhof Center from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Orr, a member of the Crime Prevention Section of the Detroit Police Department, has authored articles on crime prevention for a variety of publications, including "How to Protect Yourself from Crime," .

HEALTH CARE IN CHINA TO BE DISCUSSED IN BIOLOGY SEMINAR

"Health Care in the Peoples Republic of China" will be the topic of a seminar presentation by Dean Blietz on Monday, December 5. Blietz, a physician's assistant in the Grand Rapids area, was a participant in the ·USA-China Medical Exchange Program last SLllllller. The seminar, sponsored by the Biology Department, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 174, Lake Superior Hall.

ACROSS CAM PUS WGYC-TY OFFERS VIEWERS •A SEASON TO CELEBRATE"

Channel 35's second major membership drive of the current fiscal year, "A Season To Celebrate," will run through . Monday, December 12. The goal of drive is $380,000. It will include a variety of music ; wild life, and other specials, including a retrospective on John F. Kennedy's presidency, several Leo Buscaglia specials, and ice skating and ballroom dancing championships.

•up WITH PEOPLE• EXPECTED TO ATTRACT LARGE CROWDS

Grand Valley faculty, staff, and students are urged to allow additional time to get to classes on Tuesday, December 6, and Wednesday, December 7, due to large crowds expected on campus for three "Up With People" performances. According to Field House Building Manager Mike Stodola and Campus Police Chief Al Wygant, traffic is expected to be particularly heavy on Tuesday, December 6, from 5:30-7 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. and on Wednesday, December 7, from 8:30-10 a.m . , 12 noon-1 p.m., 5:30-7 p.m., and 9·-10 p.m.

Details on the "Up With People" performance were published in last week's FORUM.
