4 Grand Valley Fall Fair

Welcome to our 145th Grand Valley Fall Fair. 2017 will be a year of celebrations. The Grand Valley Agricultural Society would like to congratulate the Grand Valley Community Centre on their 50th Anniversary. The Community Centre will celebrate this milestone with activities on June 17th. We have been successfully holding our fair in this facility since it‟s opening in 1967, through a great partnership with the Community Centre Board over the last 50 years, and we hope to continue that tradition. On July 1st, we will celebrate Canada‟s 150th with celebrations across the country and here in Grand Valley. We would like to thank the Canada 150 committee for all their hard work in organizing this wonderful weekend of activities. Also, congratulations on the grand opening of the G.V. Information Centre. What a great venue for people passing through town, newcomers here and our locals to have a look back, to learn a little about our community‟s history; to display our history and a friendly inviting space for people to come in and pick up information about upcoming events and to see what our great community has to offer. In keeping with Canada‟s 150th, our theme for this years‟ fair is “Red and White”. Our first fundraising event was our Spring Fling, and its committee did a wonderful job of portraying our theme with a beautifully decorated hall in red and white. We will continue that theme into our fair weekend. Our Fair Ambassador, Breagh McDonald and Jr. Ambassador, McKenna Hulse, have been doing a great job representing our Agricultural Society and our community, at many events throughout the year. Well done ladies. We will be reviving our Fall Fair parade this year by holding it on the Thursday night before the opening of the fair on Friday. For the second year, we will be featuring „Strawmania‟ with some new additions, and lots more fun for the young at heart. Come out and support the Ambassador Competition, Home craft competition, featuring Roots & Vegetables, Plants and Cut Flowers, Culinary Arts, Quilting, Sewing, Needlecraft, Hobbies & Crafts, Photography and Antiques. Our Junior Work Division is such a great way to display the artistic and scholastic accomplishments of the children in our community. The dairy, goat and sheep show also gives our young farmers a chance to show off their skills and farm animals, closing with the magnificent horse show on Sunday. And let‟s not forget our farmers who work hard all year long. Come out and see what they have been planting in their fields. There will be many activities and shows going on all weekend long with so many things to see and do.

We are very excited that ‘RYTHMFOOT’ will be performing Friday night featuring Frank and Chanda Leahy & Family. It will be great to have another generation of the Leahy’s performing in Grand Valley again. Our Saturday night dance will entertain many, with music and dancing in the Grand River Room, upstairs in the Community Centre. So, come out and celebrate our 145th Fall Fair with 3-days of family fun where the past, present and future of Grand Valley come together. Jill Pogson President Grand Valley Agricultural Society

The Secretary’s office is located in the trailer outside the north door of the Exhibit Hall. The trailer has been generously loaned to the GVAS by Bob Severn, Auctioneer. *For Emergencies or if you have questions, problems or suggestions, please visit the office.

10 Grand Valley Fall Fair

My year as Senior Ambassador has been a life changing experience. During my year, I have visited local fairs, attended Annual General Meetings, attended the O.A.A.S. (Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies) Convention at the Royal York in Toronto, and finally my year will come to a close as I run for CNE Ambassador this coming summer. This opportunity has allowed me to make lifelong connections with fellow ambassadors, and members of Ontario‟s Agricultural Societies. I found that these connections were essential in order to discuss and address issues our agricultural societies face, and work towards solutions. I learned this year that our local agricultural societies are complex networks, which rely on dedicated and passionate volunteers to function. These volunteers put in countless hours all year round to put on a fall fair that will outdo years‟ past. Our fair would simply not be possible without the volunteers who generously donate their time to our community annually, I ask that when you see the friendly face of a Grand Valley Agricultural Society member at this years Fall Fair, you take the time to thank them! My year as ambassador has been a period of growth. I have been able to practice and improve my public speaking skills, as well as become more comfortable in social situations. The Ambassador experience allows young people to become independent, knowledgeable, active leaders in our community. I feel this experience is extremely beneficial to any young person, male or female, as it prepares us for the “real world”, in a post secondary scenario. I am forever grateful to everyone who has contributed to my year as ambassador, and to the Grand Valley Agricultural Society for allowing me to represent our town and agricultural society. I strongly urge young people of Grand Valley and surrounding area to run as Junior or Senior Ambassador, and get involved with your fair!

Grand Valley Fall Fair 11

This year has been the “Year of Grand Valley” for me. I would never be visiting almost every weekend if it wasn‟t for meeting new people and making new friends! This year has helped me become more confident about who I am and has helped me improve my public speaking skills. I had a lot of fun the weekend of the Fair, exploring every part with Breagh. My favourite part of the weekend was handing out the Derby awards. At first it was scary when debris was flying past, but still a lot of fun! I‟ve never been so close to crashing cars before! The next thing Breagh and I did in Grand Valley was the photo shoot! Although that day was cold, we figured out how to stay warm with Heather Greig‟s blanket! The photos turned out so amazing thanks to Heather‟s wonderful photography skills! As ambassadors, Breagh and I were invited to the Erin Fall Fair‟s cake decorating competition. We decorated a cake with “Grand Valley”. We really should have planned a few days prior! We were invited to the District 5 meeting, where I met Matt Garwood, the 2015-16 CNE winner. He gave us some pointers about speaking to a crowd! On the way to the meeting we shared laughs, discussed the Fair and experienced Jill getting a speeding ticket! Yes, It is true– quite the experience I‟d say! These are the moments I‟ll remember and I hope that in the future I can add more memories with the Grand Valley Fair Board, who I‟m proud to call “family”. Thank you for making me the 2016-17 Junior Fall fair Ambassador and a special thank you to Breagh for being an outstanding Ambassador for our fair!

Theme: ―The everyday operations of the family farm.‖ Open to all family members but encouraging the young agriculturalists of the family to participate in the presentation.

This class is to encourage young people to talk about their farm and their farm life with the support of their parents. What does your farm produce or what do you raise on your farm? How does the day-to-day operation of your farm work? A day in the life . . .

Each participating farm must include a 3-5 minute presentation. You could use a display board (should include several pictures including captions) and/or a digital presen-tation (i.e. Power Point, Slide Show, etc.)

This class is to promote our many farm producers to educate the public about their role in our local agricultural community and to also encourage our young agriculturalists by giving them the opportunity to engage in public speaking while teaching others about their family business.

This is intended to be a family project.

To participate or for more information

please contact: Jill at 519-938-6762 by August 31, 2017

An award of $25 will be given for each entry.
