grand rapids community foundation 2014 – 2015 annual report
Not quite since our founding,
but for the last few decades,
Grand Rapids Community Foundation
has been working to help our
community be more diverse and racially
equitable. Our grantmaking has long
been focused on improving the lives of
underserved and/or diverse populations.
But, only in the last few years have we
realized that inclusion is the key to
making real change in our community.
Diversity is being invited to the party;
inclusion is being asked to dance.

Most everyone knows what it feels like to be excluded: to be left
off the team or feel out of place within a group. It’s hard to imagine
not feeling part of a community where you live—but it happens—
more often than we want to believe. Inclusion happens when we
invite individuals to embrace their uniqueness and create spaces
for everyone to belong. Some of our uniqueness we are born with—
race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender. Other aspects are
choices we’ve adopted, like wearing dreadlocks, attending a temple
or a church or being vegan. Regardless of how we come by our
differences, we believe we must respect all individuals.
The issue of inclusion is big and wide ranging, and ending the
isms—sexism, ableism, racism, ageism—that plague society is a
tall order. Grand Rapids Community Foundation has been working
purposefully to change that behavior through what we do as an
organization and with the grants we make in the community.
With this year’s annual report, we’re celebrating the individuality
of people by exploring the passions and special-ness of our donors,
trustees, staff and grantees. We’re also inviting you to share yourself
with our community. Complete the enclosed postcard and share it
with us on social media or send it back by mail.

Not only is this year’s annual report celebrating all of us, it is
celebrating some major accomplishments of Grand Rapids
Community Foundation.
This year has been exceptional for grantmaking and gifts
received. But, truly, the essence of the work a community
foundation does is leadership — convening people, solving
problems and executing plans. What makes our Community
Foundation suited to this leadership work is our philanthropic
perspective: we know that there are no quick solutions to
many community issues. From restoring the Grand River to
reducing recidivism to ensuring students have what they need
to succeed in school, we’re willing to continue working for as
long as it takes to find solutions. Adapting our approach is part
of our formula for success.
One of the most important things we accomplished this year
was completing the first phase of our Challenge Scholars
campaign. This campaign, which raised $33.6 million for
first generation college students, was the largest fundraising
campaign we have ever tackled. With generous donations
from local foundations, colleges and universities, families
and individuals — and through planned gifts — we were able
to raise the funds in less than two years. It was hard work
because Challenge Scholars isn’t an immediate program. The
students we are helping now with in-classroom supports
won’t graduate from high school until 2021 and 2022, which
means donors are taking a leap of faith with the Community
Foundation. We are honored that people trust us and know we
will carry out our promises to these students, now and long
into the future. Challenge Scholars is about making sure that
students on Grand Rapids’ West Side have the same chances to
be successful in school and college as any other student in our
community, and that matters to us.
Creating Our LGBT Fund is another source of pride for us this
year. With help from two generous donors and a supportive
community, this fund was created to initially focus on the
issue of homeless and runaway LGBT youth. At our fiscal
yearend, the fund had more than $350,000 in assets and has
brought new donors to our Community Foundation. But, most
importantly, it offered us the opportunity to live one of our
most important values — inclusion.
Our growing scholarship program was another highlight this
year. We awarded 666 scholarships in 2015, for a total value
of more than $1 million. About 56 percent of the students
receiving an award are the first in their family to go to college;
25 percent are students from Grand Rapids Public Schools;
and 35 percent are students of color. We celebrate with each
student as they move on to their colleges and careers.
We hope that you’ll find much to celebrate and be proud
of in this report. We also want thank you for your support,
kind words and ongoing encouragement. Our Community
Foundation thrives with the help of friends like you.
Sincerely,
5

For Christina and Andy Keller, their work values and philanthropy values are
braided. “I think about giving as I do business—through the lens of the triple bottom
line—which means maximizing value along three areas: people, planet and profit.
I’m excited by organizations that are pushing the envelope and creating sustainable
change. I like organizations that move outside the status quo and challenge
boundaries,” Christina said.
The Kellers’ son, Jackson, is three years old and their daughter, Aspen, is one, so
they care deeply about the future. With the triple bottom line in mind, they support
Blandford Nature Center, helping keep nature in Grand Rapids and educating kids.
Andy serves on the Blandford Nature Center board. He said, “I want to help drive
systemic change in our region, and I have a soft spot for anything having to do with
improving education in the Grand Rapids community. We support Challenge Scholars
because it is helping make systemic change in Grand Rapids Public Schools.”
Grand Rapids Community Foundation provides a platform that helps these emerging
philanthropists give more strategically. “While we are still developing our giving
strategy, we have an opportunity through a Donor Advised Fund to grow our assets.
This money is designated for our donations, and we can be thoughtful about how
and when we give. The fund gives us that flexibility. Even more importantly, the
Community Foundation helps us identify giving opportunities that are making a
positive impact,” Christina said. “They have great metrics and are deeply engaged,
so it is easy to align our giving direction with theirs and contribute towards making
lasting change in our community.”
Christina: My passion is systemic change.Andy: Learning drives me.

Popular and fun, food trucks are hitting the streets of Grand Rapids, showing up at
special events and on Fridays around downtown. Joining the convoy of good eating is
the Blue Spoon Food Truck, but, unlike the other trucks, this one is about more than
good food.
Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, with a $100,000 grant from Grand
Rapids Community Foundation, will use the kitchen on wheels to expand its
workforce development program, further strengthening Goodwill’s successful social
enterprise model. This food truck gives Grand Rapidians the opportunity to eat
locally sourced food while supporting people as they develop job skills that will help
them earn a living wage. Food truck program participants receive classroom training
and hands-on experience to develop skills needed for employment in the food service
industry. Workers learn food prep, food safety, local food sourcing, customer service
skills, food operation management, commodity purchasing and employability skills.
They also learn entrepreneurial skills such as budgeting, marketing, buying and
managing a small business.
“We are thrilled to partner with Goodwill Industries in developing a new model for
social enterprise that we hope others can replicate. The revenue generated by the
food truck will cover program operating expenses, while providing opportunities
for building skills that program participants can use to obtain living-wage jobs,” said
Laurie Craft, a Grand Rapids Community Foundation program director. The average
annual household income of workforce development program participants is $7,275.
Successful food truck program participants can expect to more than triple their
personal income.
“The Community Foundation’s grant provides Goodwill the opportunity to expand
their food service training curriculum and increase the impact on the number of
individuals that can be trained. The Community Foundation is a great partner for
Goodwill, as we both share a common goal of changing lives for the better in our
community,” said Jill Wallace, Goodwill’s chief marketing officer.

Whether for economic, educational or healthcare justice, these three friends have
strong feelings about removing barriers, providing access and creating opportunities
for people in our community. Coming from diverse career backgrounds—job training,
education and business—Bev Drake, Betty Burton Groce and Ruth Lumpkins know
that there’s much work to be done before all people in the community have the
same opportunities. “Economic and social justice will never be accomplished in my
lifetime. But still, I believe in and work toward it,” Bev said.
“My giving reflects the biblical principle that God commands us to give to others. We
are required to be good stewards of the resources we are given and to help others. As
an educator, opening doors to education for those who have less will always be where
I put my support. Challenge Scholars fits well with my views on helping children,
because the program starts with them when they’re young and stays with them. It
opens opportunities for students who think they might not be able to afford college,”
Ruth said.
Betty agreed, “There are many people with great potential who don’t have the
resources to reach it. We have to remove the barriers that prevent access and
opportunity. I’m impressed by the wide range of giving that happens through Grand
Rapids Community Foundation—and not just for education. I appreciate that the
Community Foundation is aware that not everyone is college bound and supports the
importance of the trades in the Challenge Scholars program.”
“My life’s work reflects helping those who were not ordinarily able to access
opportunities, be that education, training or jobs. I like to think that I was able to
open doors for people and to help others because I had been helped. I’ve come to
know the Community Foundation over the years. I know that they believe in social
and economic justice and access for all, and, because of that, I support them,” Bev said.
Bev: I am me because I am the product of my life experience.; Betty: Me. In a Word. Committed.; Ruth: My passion is ... teaching and mentoring.
I am a believer in “knowledge is power!”

With a $100,000 grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation, one of West
Michigan’s most unique camps will expand its year-round programming. “This grant
allows for a significant increase in capacity for all Indian Trails Camp programs. The
least favorite part of my job is telling a parent, ‘I’m sorry, but we’re completely full
and don’t have room for your child at camp.’ The new Kate Pew Wolters Life Skills
and Activity Center will allow us to increase the number of campers served and offer
more respite programming during winter months,” said Tim Hileman, Indian Trails
Camp director.
Moving beyond recreation and the fun of summer camp, the new LEED certified
building will include a gymnasium, performing arts stage, computer lab, sensory
room and life skills center. The latter will let Indian Trails Camp expand capacity to
teach independent living and job skills to people with disabilities. The new space was
designed in partnership with multiple agencies and organizations throughout Kent
County, from Grand Rapids Symphony to Grand Valley State University to Mary
Free Bed Hospital. “This year-round facility is a great use of the talent, connections
and space—from life skills to adaptive sports—that Indian Trails has available. The
new building will be universally designed and good for all people,” said Kate Luckert
Schmid, a Community Foundation program director.
“Grand Rapids Community Foundation has been ensuring and advocating for
inclusion, equity and diversity for all within our community for many years. This
complements Indian Trails Camp’s mission to provide individuals, regardless of
ability, an enriched life experience through recreation, advocacy and meaningful
relationships,” Tim said.

Understanding all of the factors that influence success in education, Ken and Judy
Betz were early major donors to Grand Rapids Community Foundation’s Challenge
Scholars program. “It’s not just about the scholarship,” Judy said. The program
provides in-school supports to prepare students at three West Side schools for the
rigor of college. Students who stay with the program from sixth through twelfth grade
are awarded a scholarship when they’re accepted into college or a trade program.
“Everybody has the ability, but not everyone has the economic situation or family
support to achieve their dreams. All kids deserve a chance,” Judy added.
“If kids in low income situations are allowed the opportunity to succeed in their
education, I think they’ll really thrive at something way beyond their imagination.
But, without being able to take that first step, they won’t be able to pursue their dreams
or find out what their real abilities are,” Ken said. He noted that the family involvement
aspect of Challenge Scholars is especially appealing. Ken and Judy recognize how their
own life experiences and family views toward college shaped them. “You need family
support to believe and to be inspired to go on to college. Without it, there are extra
obstacles that make it hard to succeed,” Ken said.
Ken and Judy think the Community Foundation’s focus is parallel to what they
believe in and wish to support with their philanthropy—helping the underserved,
providing for an education and helping people in need.
Judy: My passion is education for all.Ken: Me. In a word. Mentor.

Many Grand Rapidians have seen—but have never been in—the Grand River. Some
people fish in hip waders near the dam and iconic Fish Ladder. Others paddle on
stand-up paddleboards or kayaks near Riverside Park. Most potential river users,
however, are kept at bay by giant concrete floodwalls lining the downtown riverfront.
That’s why GRForward aims to transform our “inactive” riverfront.
Grand Rapids Community Foundation made a $30,000 joint grant to the City of
Grand Rapids and GRForward to help guide a public planning process for recreation
and land use in the river corridor. “The grant allowed the City and GRForward to
offer mini grants to organizations to help engage residents in the riverfront planning
process. It gave us the opportunity to hear the voices in the neighborhoods and in
the disability community in regards to this project. With Community Foundation
funding, we made 11 minigrants of $2,500 each and had at least three meetings
with each group,” said Jay Steffen, the City’s assistant planning director. More than
3,500 residents participated in facilitated meetings or completed surveys. Disability
Advocates worked with GRForward and conducted a walking river tour to review
river accessibility for people with a variety of disabilities.
“It is important to the Community Foundation that voices of citizens, including those
from diverse neighborhoods and communities, are heard. We strongly believe that
planning grants and public input are a great value. Dollar for dollar, this is money
well spent. This river corridor project has the potential to improve the quality of life
here and attract visitors and new residents,” said Kate Luckert Schmid, a Community
Foundation program director.
“Without the funding from the Community Foundation, I don’t believe we would have
had the robust community engagement that we did,” Jay said.

Rick Gillett is a long time philanthropist and advocate for the children of Grand
Rapids and is passionate about their growth and development. “We feel so strongly
for the Grand Rapids community and its children and making this a viable and vibrant
place for all to live,” Rick said.
More than two decades ago, he helped create the Youth Enrichment Scholarship
or YES! program at Grand Rapids Community Foundation. YES! provided ongoing
summer camp experiences for promising students in Grand Rapids Public Schools.
Those summer campers who enrolled in college received a $1,500 scholarship. Over
the years, 279 students participated in the camp program, and 59 received or are
receiving college scholarships. When Challenge Scholars was created, staff worked
with Rick to create a program similar to YES! for Challenge Scholars students at
Harrison Park and Westwood Middle School. It was launched in summer 2014, and
83 Challenge Scholars attended summer camps. This past summer, 128 students took
advantage of programming at Kendall College of Art and Design, sports or computer
camps or traditional overnight venues. “The variety of positive experiences one has
as a youth can be connected to greater self confidence and real self worth as an adult.
Camps are one of the best tools to give the kids these experiences. Over the years, we
have seen YES! enrich the lives of the many students and open their eyes to a whole
new world,” Rick said.
“I received a lot of inspiration from my father [Richard Gillet Sr.], who was involved
with the Community Foundation,” Rick said. The senior Gillet served as Board
president in the 1970s. “From him I learned the importance of a strong Community
Foundation for a strong Grand Rapids,” Rick said.
Rick : My passion is kids.

Most employers ask this question on a job application: Do you have access to reliable
transportation? The Spoke Folks, a nonprofit bicycle co-op, wants every member of
our community to be able to check the “yes” box with confidence.
With a $50,000 grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation, access to reliable
transportation just got easier. The Spoke Folks knows that a large cohort of people in
Grand Rapids relies on a bicycle as a primary mode of transportation. Their goal is to
increase access for those who need bicycles for transportation, especially to and from
employment.
“For three years, we’ve operated from a fixed location, expecting people to come to
us. We know there are people all around our community with bikes that need to be
in working condition, but they struggle to make it to our shop for repairs. This grant
allows us to take what we do to places people already are, saving them a trip and
getting their bike working,” said Jay Niewiek, The Spoke Folks executive director and
co-founder.
The Community Foundation grant allows The Spoke Folks to hire a full-time staff
member to provide mechanical services from a mobile repair truck. The new staff
member will educate and empower individuals to use bicycles as a dependable mode
of transportation. “The Spoke Folks can now support residents at the neighborhood
level with affordable access to bicycles for transportation. The Spoke Folks has
established partnerships at the neighborhood level to engage with local residents,”
said Laurie Craft, a Grand Rapids Community Foundation program director.
“Making it easy for people to get a safe, reliable bicycle is what we’ve always been about.
This Community Foundation grant changes our organization completely, because it
allows us to reach into communities. We can further minimize the issues that keep
people from getting where they need to go. That’s what we’ve always been working
towards. Now we can just do it,” Jay said.

The philanthropy of Shelley Padnos and Carol Sarosik is deep and highly personal. “I
came from a family that didn’t have a lot of money, but I do know that both my parents
gave in their own way. What I’ve learned is that giving money and time is even better
than giving money alone. That way you can watch it make a difference, not only in the
community as a whole, but with individuals,” Carol said.
In 2014 the couple offered Grand Rapids Community Foundation a matching gift
of $100,000 to establish a fund to support the LGBT community in West Michigan.
The fund’s initial focus is to help homeless and runaway LGBT youth. The match was
easily met and exceeded in several months and continues to grow. Their philanthropy
centers on social justice issues and institutions where they’re connected. “We’re
inclined to be involved with causes that mean something to us personally. For me, it’s
Cranbrook and Grand Valley State University, and LGBT issues influence both our
lives,” Shelley said. “Social justice and equality have always mattered to me—from
growing up in Detroit to realizing I was a lesbian. I’ve never believed that people
should be treated differently based upon race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or for any
other inherent part of a person’s makeup, and I want help to change that,” Carol said.
The couple has had a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation since
2003, but were donors for several years prior. “We looked at creating our own
foundation, but decided that utilizing the skills and capabilities of the Community
Foundation would give us better results than creating a private foundation would.
The Community Foundation has a huge amount of credibility in this community,
and we are convinced that donors’ comfort level with giving to the Community
Foundation is part of the initial success of Our LGBT Fund,” Shelley said.
Shelley: Me. In a word. Focused. Carol: My passion is an even playing field.

You could use any of these business terms to describe a new social enterprise at West
Michigan Center for Arts + Technology (WMCAT): revenue stream, earned income,
business-to-business model or entrepreneurship.
WMCAT used a $100,000 Grand Rapids Community Foundation grant to launch
Ambrose, a commercial screen printing business. “We’re employing urban teens and
young adults in a business, while contributing to our financial sustainability. With the
grant, we hired our first group of five apprentices—all graduates of WMCAT’s teen
arts + tech program. They’re learning how to run a business, work with customers and
create quality screen-printed products. The grant will help us engage a group of high
school students in paid entrepreneurship training at Ambrose during afterschool
hours,” said Louise “Punky” Edison, WMCAT development director.
There’s a level of depth to this grant that sets it apart. “This project will provide
multiple outcomes—meaningful employment; entrepreneurial and financial skills
for youth and young adults; earned income to sustain the program; and promotion
of high school graduation and pathways to post-secondary education,” said Laurie
Craft, a Community Foundation program director.
The Community Foundation shares WMCAT’s commitment to innovation and
creating a culture of opportunity. “The Community Foundation supports our work
to help us find the most impactful and creative ways to empower urban teens. We
appreciate their dedication to best practices and new ideas around entrepreneurship.
The partnership gives great credibility to our work, allowing WMCAT to leverage
further philanthropic support for social enterprise,” Punky said.

metz legacy societyMembers of the Metz Legacy Society
are donors who have made a provision
including Grand Rapids Community
Foundation in their estate plan.
The types of provisions vary and are generally created with help
from an estate planning attorney. Gift types that we’ve received (or
have been promised) from Metz Legacy Society members include
retirement assets such as an IRA, specific dollar amounts in a will,
a percentage of the estate, life insurance policies, charitable gift
annuities, charitable remainder trusts, health savings account
proceeds and gifts of property. Donors may specify how a gift will
be used in the future or simply direct their contribution to the
Fund for Community Good. There are many options to consider,
and we’d be happy to talk with you and your professional advisor.
For more information, contact Marilyn Zack, vice president of
development, at 616.454.1751 x127.

financial summaryThis year marks another year of financial success for Grand Rapids Community
Foundation. Gift revenue was $9.2 million, and more than $9.8 million was awarded
in grants and scholarships. It should be noted that gift revenue does not include
approximately $4.7 million of promised scholarship gifts from colleges and universities
in support of our Challenge Scholars program.
Our main endowed pool returned 1.2 percent for the year. Very strong performance in
the US equities market was partially offset by negative returns in emerging markets,
commodities and hedge funds. Annualized returns, net of fees, were 8.6 percent for
two years, 10.3 percent for three years and 9.6 percent for five years. Our benchmark, as
stated in our investment policy, is to exceed the target of Consumer Price Index (CPI)
plus 5 percent over a market cycle of three to five years. We continue to exceed this
benchmark. The Investment Review Committee manages the portfolio for long-term
growth by diversifying the portfolio into several different asset classes and investment
strategies.
Last year, we added two investment options for Donor Advised Funds — a Balanced Pool,
which does not include exposure to alternatives, and a Socially Responsible Pool, which
considers both financial and social good in its investments. The Balanced Pool returned
5.4 percent for the year, and the Socially Responsible Pool returned 2.8 percent for the
year. The returns in both pools were driven by the strong domestic equity market.
All Grand Rapids Community Foundation portfolios are under the direct oversight of the
Investment Review Committee, whose members have been selected for their expertise.
Staff and the Investment Review Committee are responsible for recommending
asset allocation parameters, choosing investment managers and monitoring their
performance. The Investment Review Committee also uses an investment consulting
firm specializing in foundations to help manage the portfolio. The Investment Review
Committee reports to the Board of Trustees on a quarterly basis. Members of the
committee are listed on the previous page.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation is
Michigan’s oldest community foundation and has been
Kent County’s philanthropic leader for nearly
a century. The grants we awarded last year were made
possible by financial gifts from donors —people who
care about Kent County and want to see it thrive.
Our $327 million endowment relies on
donor gifts and market growth for its success.
A long–term investment strategy guided our allocation
of assets. We made $10.7 million in grants in six
priority areas: education, arts and social engagement,
the environment, health, neighborhoods and
economic prosperity. We lead by bringing people
together to solve complicated community problems,
realizing that, for some issues, there are no immediate
solutions or simple answers. We’ve been here since
1922, we are here with you now, and we’re confident
we will be here in the future.
about our communityfoundation

Grants are awarded six times per year after review by program staff, the
Community Action Committee and approval by the Board of Trustees.
Pre–applications and grant proposals are accepted throughout the year.
Minimally, grant applicants must serve people in Kent County, have IRS
501(c)(3) designation and work in the areas of education, arts and social
engagement, the environment, health, neighborhoods or economic prosperity.
Our guidelines detail other criteria for funding consideration. To learn more
about submitting a pre–applications or applying for a grant, please visit the

In the planning process, clients want professional advisors to provide the same level of
expert advice and guidance about philanthropy as they do for other financial, trust and
legal affairs. When talking with a client about the sale of a business, closely held stock,
an inheritance or other complex transaction, advisors often suggest philanthropy as
a solution. Grand Rapids Community Foundation’s development professionals are
experts in this area and can help facilitate these important conversations.
For more information or assistance, please contact Marilyn Zack, vice president of
development, at 616.454.1751. Our website also has resources for advisors under the
ADVISE tab at www.grfoundation.org.
