M. CONSENT ITEMS
Minutes of previous meetings, Grant Awards/Requests, Personnel Transactions,
& Financial Transactions
Minutes from December 8, 2014 Board Meeting
Grants Received by GRCC December 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014.
Grants Received by GRCC
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a grant in the amount of $2,000,000 to
support the Laboratory Preschool construction project. The goal of the project
is to construct a new preschool facility on GRCC’s campus that will become
an internationally recognized, premier center of excellence known for
innovative, high quality education, nurturing diverse learners and positively
impacting our community.
The Area Agency on Aging, through the Kent County Senior Millage program,
awarded a continuation grant in the amount of $13,217 to support Older
Learner Center’s health education programming (health club, strength &
stretch class, and fitness program). This programming helps senior participants
maintain independence through increased and/or sustained physical fitness.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) awarded $53,000
in continued support for the Career Jump Start program. The funding will be
used for program-related expenses and professional services provided by the
Career Jump Start liaison. The liaison plays an integral role in connecting high
school students with information about high demand careers and training
programs, including the Michigan Advanced Technician Training Program
(MAT2) and the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Program (AMP).
Partnership Grant Awards
The Grand Rapids Community Foundation awarded a $65,000 partnership
grant to Grand Valley State University, GRCC, Aquinas College, and
Michigan Campus Compact for the Engaged Department Initiative. This two-
year pilot project will focus on six academic departments (two from each
campus) to enhance service learning courses, support an integrated
developmental approach to service learning across their courses, and identify
and develop department rewards and recognition that encourage community-
based teaching and research. Service learning will both enhance student
outcomes in the selected academic programs and majors and prepare students
for post-graduation careers and lives of leadership and civic engagement.
GRCC will receive $13,840 of this award for its participation in this project.
