Its surreal landscapewas destined millions of years ago when volcanic eruptions from Mount Erciyessmothered hundreds of square miles withlava. Over time, rain and wind reshaped the rock, creating a bewitching landscape of deepvalleys, pyramids, towers of stone columns and bizarre rock formations. Most amazingly, the local population carved homes, churches, monasteries and chapels adorned with exquisite frescoes into the rock. During Roman rule, Cappadocia became a place of refuge for early Christians, who created an estimated 36 underground cities. In times ofpeace, the people of Cappadocia lived above ground, but when threatened, they wouldtake refuge in these underground cities for up to six months at a time. Over time, the history of these cities was forgotten, until rediscovered by a French priest in 1907.

Experience the astonishing jewel of centralAnatolia, Cappadocia.
