    On Card Interaction

  • This is a sample pull. What to make of it?

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 6/27

  • The large illustration on the first card shows Medea giving a potionto Jason, the second shows, according to the LWB, Goddessextracting gold from the river Pactolus. (Actually , I think they areNaiad Nymphs. More on this here.) But we dont pull ALL themy thology in for the purpose of card reading, were going to getmost of it from the images. (A lot of people dont want y ou to knowthis, but its simple.)

Medea is giv ing Jason something to help get the job done, so,assistance of some kind, but youve got the geomantic sign Amissio(loss) up there, Im not liking it. So, again, its not relevant how themy th turned out, the whole story wont apply . Lets just look at howthese cards fell. Now, when they land like this, I look at the conjunctsmall images, and you have Jason battling the sleepless dragon thatguards the Fleece (and holding the narcotic from Medea), conjunct abird on a rock. And the large image of the Goddesses or Naiads orwhoever, ex tracting gold. These are good things, the bird hascleared the rock, it looks like a very nice pull. But what aboutAmissio? In a geomantic reading its generally bad, but good forsome things, depending which house it falls in. And we dont hav e ahouse system reading here, we have two cards and were winging it.

So, going to the next card, look at itsee the lady with her hand inthe air? Looks like a stop gesture, doesnt it? And what is beingstopped? Amissio!

It looks like it turns out well if we can get there, the dragon(Amissio) has to be put down in order to get there (Its coming fromthat direction), very simply , JASON HAS TO THROW THE DOPE ATIT. lol! Hence the bits in the LWB about courage being needed.

One of those just do it pulls. See how easy that was?

    Queen of Diamonds Eris

  • Its nev er a good idea to sugarcoat, Im not a fan of No Bad Cards!decks and I consider it moronic and laughable to take, say , a RiderWaite Ten of Swords and say its a NICE card. But theres anexception that proves ev ery rule, and Eris has gotten a bad rap ov erthe y ears.

Consider:For the Queen of Diamonds, the LWB say s, Malicious woman, whotakes pleasure in doing harm. And the conv entional wisdom can befound here:

ERIS was the goddess or spirit (daimona) of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. She was often represented specifically asthe daimon of the strife of war, who haunted the battlefield anddelighted in human bloodshed.

Because of Eris disagreeable nature she was the only goddess notto be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. When she turnedup anyway, she was refused admittance and, in a rage, threw agolden apple amongst the goddesses inscribed To the fairest.Three goddesses laid claim it, and in their rivalry brought aboutthe events which led to the Trojan War.

Eris was closely identified with the war-goddess Enyo. IndeedHomer uses the names interchangeably. Her Roman name wasDiscordia.

I think this tells us more about PEOPLE than Eris.

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 8/27

  • Isnt she Chaos? Chaos isnt disorder, it contains both order anddisorder, randomly bumping around, making things happenwhodecided that ORDER was good? Some order is nice, you can findthings in the drawer if its tidy , but too much order is nazis marchingin lockstep. When you take the Chaos out, youre got fascism.Luckily , imposition of order brings escalation of Chaos. Forexample, if the government were to ban all speech and opinions itdidnt approve of, the result would be riots on a grand scale.

Life is Chaos. Love is Chaos. If its not bleak and dead and flat, itsChaos. I think this card might be the antidote to some excessiveimposed order. It certainly wakes things up.

For an alternate take on the event pictured on the card, go here.

From the link:It wasnt Eris fault that the trio of over-egod, cackling hengoddesses decided that THEY should get the Apple instead of thebride.

So you see,Eris has gotten a bum rap all these centuries. Since sheis the personification of Chaos, the priest class couldnt deal withthe fact that all the Gods and goddess are just manifestations of Eris(actually everything and no-thing are are all manifestations ofchaos, using order, disorder, negentropy and entropy as buildingblocks). And rather then be put out of a job, they slandered andlibeled our goddess. It wasnt until Hill and Thornley that the Truthabout Eris started to emerge. She is actually a very modest deitywho prefers to work behind the scenes. As a matter of fact, thechaos she manifests that you dont see, far outweigh the chaos thatyou do see. Y es she gets bitchy at times (hey,if you had to beEVERTHING possible and impossible, youd be a little bitchy too).- Rev . V incent V erthaine

In a reading, things are simply getting shaken up look to the near-ly ing cards to see what.

Grand Jeu ~ King of Diamonds

  • Pos ted on July 31, 2009 at 11:03 am

It has been a busy time and regrettably , I havent been here much apologies! But the work with the Jeu goes on theres no end to allthis Grand Jeu! The depth and complexity , and the fact that its beenso neglected in so many ways, make for a LOT of work, but itscoming along, bit by bit.

The LWB says Cadmus offeres a v ase to Mercury , but:

Mercury is obviously femaleMercury has no winged feetMercury has no caduceus, she has a shield and a spear a warriorqueen type

And we have to find someone like this, a patroness to Cadmus. Thefollowing is fromabout.com:Since Cadmus had lost all his men to the dragon, he needed more.Athena advised Cadmus to sow half the teeth of the dragon if hewanted companions. He planted half the teeth and gave the rest tothe goddess. From the spot where Cadmus had planted each tootha fully armed man sprang up, immediately. The new warriorsposed a clear danger to Cadmus, so, on the further advice ofAthena, he threw stones among the warriors. Each man who washit thought one of the other sown men (sparti) had hit him, so theystarted killing one another. Only five of the sparti survived, albeitwounded: Echion, Udaeus, Chthonius, Hyperenor and Pelorus. The remaining teeth, which Cadmus had given to Athena, shesaved for Jason.

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 10/27

  • So presumably those are the dragons teeth in the v ase? (Thanksy et again to Peter for that, for pointing out that she is more oftenthan not syncretised with Minerv a, and for doing the serious digginghere.)

Athena depicted on a coin of Attalus I, ruler of Pergamon c. 200BC.

GJ Sample Reading Quick Line of 5

Pos ted on July 18, 2009 at 12:49 pm

This is part of a reading for my friend G, used here with permission. She is hoping to mov e and wanted to know if it would happen soon.

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 11/27

  • We hav e two Marriage cards here, so a lot of the when and where inthis situation is dependent on a partner. Plus y ou hav e the malesignificator there. Other than that theres a Trojan War card and anUnex pected, so theres problems at the present time. Im not sayingy ou wont move ever, that would be nuts. Its just too hard to do ity ourself right now.

Anyway, the cards are 8 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 7 of Hearts, MaleSignificator and the Queen of Spades.

And I dont like the last card, it shows up when things fail. Osiris waskilled by his brother, so there may be an element of sabotage. WhatIm thinking is Vor somebody might try to help you mov e, but the plans will fallthrough. The man filling the oil lamp say s not to give up hope, give itsome time.

The 5 of Clubs and the 7 of Hearts show some bad blood, Imguessing between men (Paris and Menelaus). There may be meetingsand happy times on the surface but basically they dont like eachother v ery much and thats going to come into play in this situation.

Y our geomantic signs are:RUBEUS (RED) Passion. Vice, temper. Sexuality . This is a warningfor caution and a need for retreat. Negativ ity and upheav al. Stopand listen to y our inner v oice to find the correct path to follow.Good in all that is ev il, and ev il in all that is good.Associations: Mobile, Mars, Scorpio, Tuesday, Water, Genitals andReproductive System

And:LAETITIA (JOY ) Joy , laughter, happiness, good luck, delight, beauty , good health, harmony and peace of mind. Favourable foralmost ev erything. A secret is rev ealed. Agreement.Associations: Mobile, Jupiter, Pisces (Agrippa: Sagittarius),Thursday , Water, Feet

So it will end well eventually , its just going to take awhile. I think thetime of the first disappointment is the time to really start putting alot of effort into this, since Laetitia and the dead Osiris are on thesame card. Hope this helps.

Pos ted on July 13, 2009 at 12:04 pm

The following is part of a big combo reading that my friend G hasgenerously offered to let me share here.

Sun Birds Moon Roads Heart Tower Coffin Key ParkGent Flowers Ship House Letter Stork Book Snake MountainMice Ring Anchor Clouds Whips Tree Cross Stars BearLilies Dog Lady Scythe Fox Rider Clov er Fish Child

Okay , lov e first! The Heart is knighting to the Tree AND its in thehouse of the Tree, also knighting to the Clouds, imply ing some kindof lov e sickness. By the Roads, youre making y our decisions out oflov e and thats not alway s the way to go. Still, youve got the Moonby the Roads, showing that your heart generally steers you the rightway. With the Heart reflecting the Fox , please try to be careful, people will try to take advantage of your good nature, so rememberto think things through, as well. The Lady Scythe Fox line showsthat y oure pretty good at seeing through a lie. The Tower showssome isolation and the possibility of lost lov e, then y ou hav e theCoffin after, with the drape pointing to the Tower. I think this is justa sign of things blowing hot and cold, fight, make up, etc. Beneaththe Tower y ou hav e the Stork, again, change (for the better, though, usually ), and its in a diagonal line to the Cross. A lot of this stuff justseems fated, not much you can do but hang on for the ride. Heart

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 13/27

  • House Anchor is very good, lov e and stability in the house, thathelps. No matter what problems arise, y ouv e got strongfoundations and pretty good luck. I think V is the Gentleman and ify ou look at the diagonal line, it goes Gent Ring Lady . So yourekind of stuck with him. Razz Thats okay, he cares about y ou. Y ouvegot the Lilies in the house of the Gent, so, passion. Of course with theLilies-Dog combo next to y our card, there is another man, just afriend at this point, who is very interested, so V had better behave, lol. In summary : A bumpy road but worthwhile if y ou want it.

Money: Y ouv e got Stars Fish! I wish my cards would come out likethis! Thats good money coming, a decent amount, Im going to putit in the thousands. Bear Fish is bearish and abundant, while Fish Child shows smaller amounts as well lucky lucky lucky! Cross Fish isnt so good, though. Its a tight squeeze, a narrowescape.maybe expenses? Fish Clover giv es you some luck, though. The Clover is fleeting, so if an opportunity arises, grab it.Clover Cross shows that things will likely turn out okay. The Fish inthe house of the Anchor say that money will come from work andinv estments. Fish knight to Book more money that you dont knowabout y et, Fish knight to Mountain frozen assets, this money is tiedup/in escrow? Keep your eyes open.

    Now, same questions, Grand Jeu:

Love the first two cards show you heeding what *someone* saysand being v ery trusting. Generally this man is very straightforwardand obliging, but his motiv ation was at least partially self-seeking.Do you see the lady carrying the bug on the lower left of the King ofDiamonds? Think about why she is doing that. Y ou can look a thesecards and see advice, plans, gifts all very good but watch themotivethis man was behaving like the pig on the lower right of theKing of Diamonds, hanging around to see what the bird (y ou) drops. The adjoining illustration shows him all decked out like a finegentleman. Oy , vey . And I think Chiron just shows that things are inshambles at present, but there is opportunity to transform them. Wemove to the nex t small picture of the person with one arm wingedand the other weighted. There is a mix in this situation, good andbad, so I can see where y ou are hesitant to throw the baby out withthe bathwater. Y our next card shows news or a message comingv ery soon, if y ou havent gotten it already . Its best to keep thisquiet and watch Argus! Argus is the person who has a big mouth,

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 14/27

  • who can make problems for y ou. See those things on his face? Thatsnot bad skin, those are eyes! All of this is tied to the good-badrelationship. So it might be best to avoid nosy people for awhile.Anubis is guarding some papers and telling y ou to keep a secret. And the secret appears to be a marriage proposal or something ofthat nature. In any case, this line ends well and the alchemist hasachieved the Philosophers Stone. So things will work out.

Money The three of Diamonds shows Castor and Pollux. In themy th the twins shared the same mother but had different fatherswhich meant that Pollux was immortal and Castor was mortal. WhenCastor died, Pollux asked Zeus to let him share his own immortalitywith his twin to keep them together and they were transformed intothe constellation Gemini. So this is a card of things wanting to cometogether, but the situation us a little tricky . The next card isLaverna, theft, deceit, all those things you dont want in a moneyspread. The small pictures are telling you to be especially carefulclose to home, people have been try ing to be slick right under y ournose. But this influence is passing new and we are coming to the 5 ofHearts. The person stealing from the drawer becomes the chainedbird!

Negotiations are underway , as we see from the large illustration, andthese should be profitable. I think the money situation could getmuch better v ery soon, but y ou will need to use care managing yourfinances, as we see from the wise old man on the King of Hearts. Thefinal card of this line is the 9 of Clubs, Hercules battling the Hy dra,and y our small illustration shows a man selling dates. This is a cardof business success, but not without stress or having to fightsometimes to maintain what you have won. No surprises there, butIm happy it ends well.

Taken all together: a bumpy ride, but not without nice things alongthe way . Y ou will prev ail.

Grand Jeu 10 of Spades Laverna

Pos ted on July 1, 2009 at 10:21 am

When reading this deck, one should hav e at least a passingfamiliarity with the my ths. Y ou dont have to memorise everydetail, just be aware of the stories and how they might apply to yourreading.

The 1 0 of Spades, for instance, pictures Laverna. Lav erna was thegoddess of thiev es, cheats, and the underworld, and was propitiatedby libations poured with the left hand. Y ou certainly dont have tov enerate her, but her story is interesting and worth noting, especially since all the LWB tells y ou about this image is Burglarsare keeping a watch on y ou. The following is taken from LelandsAradia:

The following very curious tale, with the incantation, w as not inthe text of the Vangelo, but it very evidently belongs to the cycle orseries of legends connected with it. Diana is declared to be theprotectress of all outcasts, those to whom the night is their day,

    15/11/2009 Grand Jeu Lenormand :

    freakyfortuneteller.com/ 18/27

  • consequently of thieves; and Laverna, as we may learn fromHorace (Epistles, 1 6, 1 ) and Plautus, was preeminently thepatroness of pilfering and all rascality. In this story she alsoappears as a witch and humourist.

It was given to me as a tradition of Virgil, who often appears asone familiar with the marvellous and hidden lore of the olden time.

It happened on a time that Virgil, who knew all things hidden ormagical, he who was a magician and poet, having heard a speech(or oration) by a famous talker w ho had not much in him, wasasked what he thought of it? And he replied:

It seems to me to be impossible to tell whether it was allintroduction or all conclusion; certainly there w as no body in it. Itwas like certain fish of whom one is in doubt whether they are allhead or all tall, or only head and tall; or the goddess Laverna, ofwhom no one ever knew whether she w as all head or all body, orneither or both.

Then the emperor inquired who this deity might be, for he hadnever heard of her.

And Virgil replied:Among the gods or spirits who were of ancient timesmay theybe ever favourable to us! Among them (was) one female who w asthe craftiest and most knavish of them all. She was called Laverna. She was a thief, and very little known to the other deities, whowere honest and dignified, for she was rarely in heaven or in thecountry of the fairies.

She w as almost always on earth, among thieves, pickpockets, and pandersshe lived in darkness. Once it happened that she went(to a mortal), a great priest in the form and guise of a very beautifulstately priestess (of some goddess), and said to him:

Y ou have an estate which I wish to buy. I intend to build on it atemple to (our) God. I sw ear to you on my body that I will pay theewithin a year.

Therefore the priest transferred to her the estate.

And very soon Laverna had sold off all the crops, grain, cattle, wood, and poultry. There was not left the value of four farthings.

But on the day fixed for payment there was no Laverna to beseen. The goddess was far away, and had left her creditor in assoin the lurch!

At the same time Laverna went to a great lord and bought of hima castle, well-furnished within and broad rich lands without.

:"But this time she swore on her head to pay in full in six months.

  • And as she had done by the priest, so she acted to the lord of thecastle, and stole and sold every stick, furniture, cattle, men, andmicethere was not left wherewith to feed a fly.

Then the priest and the lord, finding out who this was, appealedto the gods, complaining that they had been robbed by a goddess.

And it was soon made known to them all that this was Laverna.

Therefore she was called to judgment before all the gods.

And when she w as asked what she had done with the property ofthe priest, unto whom she had sworn by her body to make paymentat the time appointed (and why had she broken her oath)?

She replied by a strange deed which amazed them all, for shemade her body disappear, so that only her head remained visible, and it cried:

Behold me! I swore by my body, but body have I none!

    Then all the gods laughed.

After the priest came the lord who had also been tricked, and towhom she had sworn by her head. And in reply to him Lavernashowed to all present her whole body without mincing matters, and it was one of extreme beauty, but without a head; and from theneck thereof came a voice which said:

Behold me, for I am Laverna, whoHave come to answer to that lords complaint,Who swears that I contracted debt to him,And have not paid although the time is oer,And that I am a thief because I sworeUpon my headbut, as you all can see,I have no head at all, and therefore IAssuredly neer swore by such an oath.

Then there was indeed a storm of laughter among the gods, whomade the matter right by ordering the head to join the body, andbidding Laverna pay up her debts, which she did.

    Then Jove spoke and said:

Here is a roguish goddess without a duty (or a worshipper),while there are in Rome innumerable thieves, sharpers, cheats, andrascalsladri, bindolini, truffatori e scrocconiwho live by deceit.

These good folk have neither a church nor a god, and it is a greatpity, for even the very devils have their master, Satan, as the headof the family. Therefore, I command that in future Laverna shall bethe goddess of all the knaves or dishonest tradesmen, with thewhole rubbish and refuse of the human race, who have been

  • hitherto without a god or a devil, inasmuch as they have been toodespicable for the one or the other.

And so Laverna became the goddess of all dishonest and shabbypeople.

Whenever any one planned or intended any knavery or aughtwicked, he entered her temple, and invoked Laverna, whoappeared to him as a womans head. But if he did his work ofknavery badly or maladroitly, when he again invoked her he sawonly the body; but if he was clever, then he beheld the wholegoddess, head and body.

Laverna was no more chaste than she was honest, and had manylovers and many children. It was said that not being bad at heartor cruel, she often repented her life and sins; but do what shemight, she could not reform, because her passions were soinveterate.

And if a man had got any woman w ith child or any maid foundherself enceinte, and would hide it from the world and escapescandal, they would go every day to invoke Laverna.

Then when the time came for the suppliant to be delivered,Laverna would bear her in sleep during the night to her temple, and after the birth cast her into slumber again, and bear her backto her bed at home, and when she awoke in the morning, she wasever in vigorous health and felt no weariness, and all seemed to heras a dream.

But to those who desired in time to reclaim their children,Laverna was indulgent if they led such lives as pleased her andfaithfully worshiped her.

Laverna was the Roman goddess of thieves, pickpockets, shopkeepers or dealers, plagiarists, rascals, and hypocrites. Therewas near Rome a temple in a grove w here robbers went to dividetheir plunder. There was a statue of the goddess. Her image, according to some, was a head w ithout a body; according toothers, a body without a head; but the epithet of beautiful appliedto her by Horace indicates that she who gave disguises to herworshippers had kept one to her self. She was worshipped inperfect silence.

There is an artist named Thalia Took who created one of thosemodern multigoddess decks, the kind that I normally trust about asfar as I can throw a bull by the tail, but she wrote a very nice bit onLaverna:

I am the goddess of darkness, first. Darkness and the slow mouldof the Earth: the lives buried, the gems undug, the riches hidden. Iam the snatching hand, the purse lifted and the coin lost; and I am

  • the w oman in the shadows, watching, always watching. I am hereeven on the well-lit street, for light always makes the darknessdeeper. I see treasures thrown away, fortune unshared, preciousthings put aside for safekeeping then forgotten. I am the relentlessthievery of Time, who unfastens the last breath from the body, unlocks the knotted sinew, and picks apart even the eternal bones.I am She who takes the last coin from your pocket, the one youwere to give to Charun for safe passageyou do not need it, really.

If you fear me or do not, this is my advice. Live your life so itcannot be stolen. Live your life as a string of jewels, bright andbeautiful and of value, for upon your death, this alone can not betaken from you. So that when life is cheated from you (and it willbe), you have had the joy of it.

I couldnt find any ancient images, but I did find a morecontemporary pic that captures the basic essence of Laverna:

And I leave it at that. I hope all this has opened the card a bit fory ou.
