THE 19TH HOLE
June is one of my favorite months. We welcome the first day of summer, celebrate Father’s Day
and stay glued to the television for the second major golf tournament of year; the US Open. This
year’s US Open Championship is being played at Chambers Bay, University Place, in the state of
Washington June 15-21, 2015. Visit www.chambersbaygolf.com to learn more details about this
unique venue in the Pacific Northwest and www.usopen.com for all the fascinating history and most
recent news items on the tournament itself. Will Martin Kymer defend his 2014 title or could this
years trophy be hoisted by one of the players earning entry through a local qualifier? We’ll all just
have to wait and see.
Our new golf cart fleet arrived on May 18th. It was quite a sight to see the four Club Car tractor
trailers lined up in the parking lot carrying the 72 shiny new vehicles. The new fleet is identical
looking to the old but there is no mistaking the noticeable difference in acceleration and ride. Enjoy!
Also new this month is the addition of Billy VanArsdale to our golf staff. Billy will be managing the
golf shop and cart staff and we are very fortunate to have him join our team. Please stop in the golf
shop to say hello and introduce yourself.
Monday’s this month include three play day opportunities the 8th, 15th and 29th. Tee times will
run 7:30 to 11am and guests of members are welcome to play at a rate of $55 plus tax (4 times per
year). The driving range will be open on the Monday play days until 1pm.
Speaking of Monday’s, on June 15th we are hosting a special “Ladies Learn and Play” beginning
at 1pm. This day is designed to give women an introduction to golf in a comfortable fun
environment. Beginner or experienced, member or non-member - you are welcome to join us. $5 of
each entry fee will be donated to “GAL 7” of Flagler County. Look for the details on page 9 of this
newsletter or stop by the golf shop to sign up.
The food and beverage department has been very busy this past month creating new menus and
functions for you to enjoy at the club. You’ll definitely not want to miss The
Not So” Newly Wed Game Wednesday June 24th. Our own Bill Holland has volunteered to be the
Game Show Host for this fun and entertaining evening. Look for details contained in this newsletter
for this and other great club events on tap this month. See you around the club,
May was a busy month for the Grand Haven
Maintenance team! We sprayed our second
pre-emergent herbicide application, applied our
insect control to the whole course, put out 12
tons of fertilizer wall to wall, and aerified all the
tees and fairways! We have also maintained our
schedule of bi-weekly verticutting and topdressing
greens. The only thing missing was some rain. We
only received .37" in May. It has been a struggle
to keep moisture in the soil via the irrigation sys-
tem. In an ideal world, irrigation is a supplement
to regular rainfall, not a replacement. With all that
being said, the course is holding up well.
Our new Toro ProCore 648 Aerifier was delivered
on May 22nd. Mother Nature permitting, the
greens will have already been aerified (May 31st
and June 1st) and started the healing process
when this newsletter goes out. The aerification
holes are small and tightly spaced. With the next
two aerifications, we may punch a larger hole that
is more spread out. The new equipment allows us
to be more versatile with our
aerification practices. We can
adjust spacing and tine size/type
dependent upon what we see in
the way of greens condition, as well as pick the
plugs up and roll the green all with this machine.
The ProCore is a welcome addition to our fleet of
equipment at Grand Haven!
While the course is closed on June 1st, we are
contracting a Bobcat service to help us clear the
line of sight issue from the back tees to the
fairway on #6. Our in house attempt was a failure
due to...let's call it wildlife! With the aid of the
Bobcat, we will hopefully solve the problem with
that wetland area.
If you have any questions or comments about the
aerification process or the golf course in general, I
can be reached at [email protected]

This program has been designed to give you the opportunity to take a look at how
your address to impact motion sequence can clearly affect scoring consistency. Your
swing motion pattern can even cause physical pain and strain on your body. Let me
help you find the emotional and physical “path of least resistance” in your golf game.

Welcome Billy Van Arsdale! AKA Billy. He is 57 years old
and was born in Greer, South Carolina. He has lived and worked most of my
career at clubs in Western North Carolina. He also is a "Quarter Century" (29
years) Class A member of the P.G.A. of America. His hobbies include fishing,
yoga, playing with my granddaughter. Still love to play and compete in state
and sectional tournaments. He is excited to be at Grand Haven and wants
to meet all of you.

First off and foremost, I would like to introduce
myself Chef Thomas Gschwind and my
colleague Chef Jason Musella, as the new
culinary additions to this already fantastic grand
haven golf club team! We are very excited to
plant our feet, roll up our sleeves and get to
work. Jay and I have a number of years of ex-
perience working with each other as kitchen
managers and chefs. We also attended three
years of culinary school together at First Coast
Technical College in St. Augustine Fl.
Chef Jason has cooked and managed
at a few different local seafood restaurants
throughout his culinary career. He has a passion
for making exceptionally good food and puts a
lot of focus in his southern style cuisine. I could
not be happier to have not only a great chef and
great employee as a part of my culinary team,
but a great friend as well.
For myself, growing up on a large farm
in upstate New York taught me many things like
waking up early, working hard through a
multitude of different conditions and being
accountable. All are things I look forward to
bringing here to
Grand Haven
with me. Like
Chef Jason, I
have years of experience working in local area
restaurants at all kitchen level aspects. I am
personally excited about sharing my take on
food with all of the Members here and can’t wait
to start hearing responses back.
We have a handful of things to look
forward to in the month of June from a food and
beverage point of view. Starting June 2nd, our
new lunch menu and bar menu will be out so be
ready to come and check everything out. Out
lunch menu will be available Tuesday through
Sunday daily from 11am-4pm. The bar menu
will be available Wednesday through Saturday
from 4pm-7pm. We also have a few different
member and social events scheduled so be sure
to check out the monthly calendar and schedule
accordingly!

Thank you to all the lovely models that
volunteered at the Chico’s Fashion show benefit
for the GAL7 Foundation. 140 ladies filled the
clubhouse for wine, hor d’oeuvres, and dessert
while 12 beautiful models showcased Chico’s new
fashion lines. Thank you to the committee who
put together such a wonderful event.
Two beautiful weddings finished off the month.
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. James and Mr. &
Mrs. Brown. The Grand Haven team transformed
with clubhouse into a beautiful fairytale for the
brides. Best wishes to the two happy couples!
Create a special event, casual or formal, during
these hot summer months. High school or college
graduate? Throw a surprise party in the Coastal
Room overlooking the Intracoastal waterway.
Birthday or milestone around the corner? Come
celebrate with the Grand Haven team. Have
friends or family visiting this summer? Make the
most of your time together and let us do the
cooking for you. Whether it’s a small get-together
or a large family reunion, we strive to make your
event a memory forever!
Wow! May was an exciting
month with Mother’s Day
brunch, two weddings, a
charity golf tournament, a
fashion show, H.E.R.O.S.
breakfast, DJ night with
the Supernatural Duo, a
Murder Mystery Dinner, and a tea party.
We kicked off the month with a tournament
benefiting Gratitude America. Over 70 golfers
and an additional 50 guests for the awards
dinner raised $6000 for our soldiers coming
home. Thank you to Coldwell Banker Premier
Properties and all participating sponsors for
hosting such a successful event.
We welcomed the Flagler County Tourism Office
and their H.E.R.O.S. of Flagler County for
breakfast at the club. Every year the tourism
office recognizes the front line employees in the
hospitality industry. These H.E.R.O.S are given
awards for their outstanding service and
thanked for going above the everyday call of
duty. Congratulations and thank you for your
excellent service.
Happy Mother’s day to all the mom’s out there
and thank you for joining us at the Mother’s Day
brunch. We had over 120 members dine with
our new chefs and Meagan wowed us again

Over the last several months all
the technical difficulties with the
statement Web site I thought it
would be helpful to demonstrate
how to read your monthly
member statement. I know how frustrating it can
be to not understand how a company is billing you.
I want you to know that my office always has an
open door. I truly value each member and want
you to know how seriously I take billing and
statements each month. I can tell you that if a
question is asked about your monthly statement
that I cannot answer I will find out for you. The
billing statement has many intricate parts that
unless a person understands each part it may
seem a simple process. Each time a member
comes and utilizes the Club there is a possibility
for charges to occur in 3 different departments.
Each department charges a member’s account
essentially the same way but appears on the
statement differently. As you can see below I have
highlighted a golf charge as well as a food and
beverage charge. When you look at your statement
online you will notice that the Reference# is a
hyperlink that when you click on it will pop the
actual ticket up in a separate window on your com-
puter. In order to view your statement like it is
shown below you will need to click on the drop
down box and pick the month you want to view.
Then click on the “Printable View” button. Your
statement should open in another window. You
then should be able to take the previous balance
plus the purchases, minus any payments/credits
and reach the same total that appears in the
balance due box. I hope this has helped and
remember I can be reached via phone at extension
3208 or via email at [email protected] .

If you walked through any door at Grand Haven chances are you have noticed
Joseph’s work. If you have used any restroom in the Clubhouse you have probably
noticed Joseph’s work. If you have walked on the sidewalk or set on the patio, then
you have witnessed Joseph’s work. Joseph Berleus worked diligently for Grand
Haven for over 11 years. He was here faithfully each week from 6:00 am—11:30 am
to make sure the Clubhouse was ready for guests. He has chosen to retire and
focus on finishing his book and spending time with his family. Reggie Mathelier who
has been part of our Grand Haven team since 2013 will be taking over Joseph’s
roles. There is a card in Sarah’s office if you wish to send Joseph any well wishes.
The card will be available until June 26th.
