 April started with big celebrations here in Cambodia.  Khmer New Year is one of three New Years that Cambodians celebrate.  The others being the International NY and the Chinese NY. Our school dressed up in traditional Khmer clothes for the occasion. Graham opted for the peasant look.   

Here we are with our 2 TAs and Grade 6 students. 

 We had a special assembly, in Khmer, with singing, dancing, acting and even a tug of war!  

 Then we played traditional  Cambodian games; shawl and water balloon game, rice sack relay,  another tug of war….and the obligatory water fight to end the  day.      We have had ‘art appreciation’ week and our class created different artist inspired Cambodian style paintings, mosaics, collages and boxes.  On the last day all the classes walked around the school to see each others’ art work. 

Our other ‘school news’ is that the extra teacher we were praying for turns out to be us!  We are both going to teach Grade 2 full time starting in August.  We are really looking forward to the challenge of a new year group and using exciting ways to help students with English as an additional language. 

  So the Cambodian New Year coincided with Easter and we enjoyed a week away on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. It is only 230 km away but it took all day to get there.  We were backpacking in true style taking a tuk tuk, coach, walking through the border, waiting…. and waiting…. mini bus, ferry, taxi and…. finally arriving at our destination!  This is us on one of the waits. 

It was well worth it.  We stayed right by the beach in a resort area that was still being developed but, even so, the facilities were amazing. 

           

The night markets are great fun; sampling local delicacies, eating ‘fried’ ice-cream, spending pocket money on keyrings with names written on a grain of rice and watching the world go by.   

 We had a day trip to Vinpearl Land, the Vietnamese condensed version of Disney Magic Kingdom, water parks and Animal Kingdom.  It was so condensed, we managed to see all the animals, go on the water slides, do most rides, go to the aquarium and see the 5D movie (3D with a water spray and a spider attack)  and fountain show all in one day! 

 And of course, no holiday is complete without the boat trip to islands, fishing 

and snorkelling.           

  

 The Phnom Penh 10k run was the last race for some team members so this time they all ran together.  We were up at 4.30 am for this!  After the run, we all went out for breakfast.    

We were invited to speak at Logos elementary chapel where we talked about Jesus being the True Friend. In our Bible sessions with our class we have been doing a series on the Nature of God.  Our end of year celebration of achievement presentation was based on this theme.  It has apparently been an unusually cool hot season this year as we have had plenty of rain.  It’s amazing how the rain cools the temperature, by that, we mean down to the mid 30s!  It is also mango season and here is Anneliese having a play with the street mango picker.  Cambodians love their mangoes unripe dipped in chillis & salt… something we have yet to get used to!

And so school ends with more goodbyes and sadly Anneliese had to say goodbye to Miss B and her friend Grace, and Raffy to his friends Ava and Manu.  There have been parties and end of year meals.  As a farewell memory for Miss B, we went climbing to Kidz City and then to ‘Cold Stone’ cafe for ice-creams mixed on an ice cold stone.  Yum!   We now have a two month break so will be moving house and exploring SE Asia. 

   

Pray for Cambodia    

The Commune elections are on June 4th.  Canvassing and rallying has s caused massive traffic jams.  Unlike election campaigns in the U.K. things can quickly become volatile and dangerous.  This is a prayer request from one of the VDP (Village Development Programme) staff:     

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, 

I do really need your prayer around Asian Hope. Due to the unstable circumstances in Cambodia, commune election is coming soon, things are acting crazy, because of that, one of my staff " Sreyroth 'Sara' Thy " Her husband was shot last night around 8 pm. Luckily, he injured only on the lower leg, AK B47, And now he stays at Kam Pong Chhanag Hosptial, province, at the moment no clue who was the shooter. He was with 4 persons and 1 dead and three injured.  

 One of the campaigning parties is the Democratic Party - quite telling…. Our final topic with our Grade 6s was ‘Modern Society’ where we were covering government, International relations, the UN and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).   The most ambitious goal of the UN 17 Global Goals for 2030 is Goal 1 - to end poverty.       

The VDP programme posted a need: Help teach English with VDP during the 2017-18 school year! Our English program helps over 100 youth, ages 13 and up, know God and compete for better paying jobs when they finish school. We have two volunteer opportunities for native English speakers at VDP Phnom Penh Thmei: 

● Reading Teacher - one evening per week (5-7 pm), 4 volunteers needed ● Bible Teacher - one Friday per month (5-7 pm), 1 volunteer needed 

Help us make a difference for kids in Cambodia and God’s kingdom! Volunteers only need a servant’s heart and a desire to be part of the team.  

 A start has been made on the building of a Secondary block for AHIS.  This is in the grounds of the building where we teach so we are seeing progress on a daily basis.  This new development needs to be completed by August 2018 for our ever increasing number of students.
