What started out as a simple ideabetween a couple of local car clubs hasblossomed into an occasion that drawsabout 20,000 spectators and participantsover its five-day span.

The Umpqua Flatheads Roseburg Graffi-ti Night Cruise for vehicles 1972 and olderis scheduled for 6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday indowntown Roseburg.

Don Larson, a member of the GraffitiWeekend committee, said there has been

some concern by organizers about partici-pants and attendance for Graffiti Weekendbecause of economic struggles for somepeople and businesses, but he said hesoptimistic about the event continuing to bea success.

Were concerned, but were still gettinga lot of phone calls so were still expectinga full house, Larson said. These eventstreat people well; it doesnt cost them anarm and a leg. People can participate witha donation here and there. Were happy itkeeps going strong.

Last years registration totaled about 450cars that were pre-1975 models. About 70

percent of the registered cars come fromout of the area.

Graffiti Weekend had its firs t run back in1982, with participants and spectatorsreliving the 1950s by cruising some classiccars down Harvard Avenue in Roseburg. Now, each summer, hundreds gatherdowntown to join the founders of the Graf-fiti Night Cruise in remembering a simplertime.

Since those early days, the cruise hasgrown into one of Douglas Countys mostnoteworthy events, chock-full of hot rods, barbecues and other family entertainmentknown as Graffiti Weekend.

One of those events is the 29th AnnualRiver Forks Show-N-Shine, another high-light of the week, presented by the Stray

Angels Car Club. Some 500 cars, from1975 or older, will rumble into River ForksPark west of Roseburg for a day of displayin the sun.

We feel pretty proud of it, Larson saidof the weekend. We want it to be anaffordable family event.

Anybody interested in sponsoring anevent or being a partner of an event cancall 541-672-5634 for more information.Details are also available online at graffiti-weekend.com.

    The News-Review

he hot rods first rumbled down a half-milestretch of Harvard Avenue between PetesDrive-In and the old A&W restaurant on July10, 1982.

No one knew what to expect at the inaugural Graffi-

ti Weekend. Former Roseburg resident Richard Dick-man came up with the idea that a cruise down Harvardreliving the 1950s with old cars and period musicmight make for a fun night.

Flyers advertising the event were made up and sentto car clubs throughout the area. Three clubs, the StrayAngels, which used Petes as their base, the UmpquaFlatheads, whose members congregated at A&W, andthe Timberland Corvettes, which lined up at the Astrogas station, served as hosts. The A&W was at the cor-ner of Stanton and Harvard streets. That location isnow the west side of the Harvard Medical Park.

We had no idea what would happen (at the firstcruise), said Don Larson, who back then, as today,

drives a 1948 Plymouth coupe in the annual cruise.Cars from all over jammed Harvard while pedestri-

ans clogged sidewalks to get a look at the cars goingby. There was so much traffic it took an hour to crawla short distance on the road, said Paul Hubbard, whoat the time was president of the Timberland Corvettes.

It was much larger than we ever expected, said

Mary Zink, a charter member of the Umpqua Flat-

heads, founded in 1975.This years Graffiti Weekend, with events scheduled

over five days, marks the 30th year of the car cruise. The River Forks Show-N-Shine, sponsored by theStray Angels, is in its 29th year.

only to the Douglas County Fair in terms ofpopularity in the Roseburg area, Hubbardsaid. Its talked about all over the WestCoast.

The cruise portion of Graffiti, which nowincludes 20 separate events from an icecream social to several car shows to a partsswap meet to a car cruise to area nursinghomes remained on Harvard for only thefirst three years. It was later moved to aclosed route through downtown Roseburgon Jackson Street and Main Street.

The move meant people who werent partof the cruise were able to negotiate Harvardmuch easier. And downtown, with its one-way streets, allowed the cruisers an orderlyplace to move around in and for bystandersto get a close-up look at all of the vehicles. It also provided a way to limit the types ofcars and their ages that would be allowed to

join in on the cruise.Harvard was fun because as drivers you

got to see all of the other cars, Zink said. Now, you can only see those that arearound your own car. Still, it has workedout well downtown.

Today, Graffiti draws cruisers and specta-tors from a wide area.

We send out flyers to car clubs fromYreka, Calif., to Portland and from Bend tothe coast, Larson said.

    The Show-N-Shine, which since its

inception has been staged at River ForksPark west of Roseburg, remains one of theevents most popular features. Visitors are

able to walk around andlook at the cars and talk totheir owners.

People who arent evencar people come out tolook at the cars, Hubbardsaid. Its a love-love situa-tion with the people whoshow their cars and thepeople who go out to seethem.

One of the selling pointsfor Graffiti, which Larsonand Hubbard believe is oneof the major reasons theRoseburg event hasbecome so popular, is thatthe car owners areapproachable and dont puton airs, even though some

of the cars on display maybe worth up to a half-mil-lion dollars.

The car owners alsoenjoy the feedback theyreceive.

They love the way peo-ple here treat them, Hub-bard said.

Another positive aspectof Graffiti is that there isno admission charge to go

to the Show-N-Shine or to attend the cruise. In fact, nearly all of the events are free.

People know they can come in and not

have to pay an arm and a leg, Larson said. That makes it real attractive to families.

Sponsors, including Cascade CommunityCredit Union, help take care of much of thecosts of putting on Graffiti, they said.

We started with Pepsi, Abbys and FastStop. Theyre still with us, he said.

Both Larson and Hubbard, who nowdrives a 1955 Buick in the cruise andbelongs to the Street Memories Car Club, say they especially enjoy the Thursdayafternoon cruise to 13 local nursing homesand rehabilitation centers. Three groups of20 cars each make the rounds to differenthomes, giving residents a chance to lookover the cars and talk with the drivers.

Residents from each home are also giventhe opportunity to vote for their favorite car, with the winning owners provided a plaque.

Car shows in several other towns

throughout the Northwest have also added anursing home run to their schedules. Larsonand Hubbard said they feel honored that theidea has been copied and used in otherplaces.

The two men said theyre also proud ofwhat Graffiti has become from a simpleidea for a group of car enthusiasts to gettogether and have some fun.

Its a fun week that everyone looks for-ward to, Hubbard said.

    The News-Review

wINCHESTER An avid carcollector and restorer, DaveOwens has sold several cars

in his lifetime, but he just cant seem topart ways with his newly restored, cardi-nal red 1963 Corvette.

Ive grown quite attached to it after allof the work Ive done. It has sentimentalvalue, and I would have a hard time sell-ing it, he said.

When Owens, 69, of Winchester pur-chased the Corvette 13 years ago for$20,000 from Dave Washburn, his Win-chester neighbor, it was beat up and wornout, he said. The much needed restorationhas been under way for the past threeyears.

The 63 Corvette has undergone severalchanges, including new paint and chrome.A 327 V8 engine replaced the previous1966 327 Chevelle engine.

When I saw the car, I knew I wanted it.But the biggest challenge was talking mywife into it, Owens said chuckling.

He said he was drawn to the car becauseCorvettes are fun to drive, and he knew itwould be a good project to take on. Hesaid that the earlier Corvettes are relative-ly easy to work on because they arentcomputerized.

Even so, Owens has run into a few

problems. One time, the radiator hose was looseand fell off, and it burnt up the engine, hesaid.

Although the Corvette has virtuallyundergone a full restoration, Owens is notquite done yet, he said. The next step is towork on the hard top.

Owens said that he does the majority ofthe restoration himself at his home shop.

Friend Ron Foss, 71, of Melrose paintedthe Corvette, sticking with the originalred.

Owens other cars include a 1939 Fordcoupe, 1938 Ford pickup and 1951 MG.

Besides the MG and Corvette, Owenshas also restored a 1915 Ford Model T.

His fascination for cars and restorationstarted as a teenager when he worked at agas station in Santa Barbara, Calif., forabout a year and a half. While in highschool, he owned the same make andmodel as the Ford coupe that he has now.

Fast forward a few decades and after 43

years as a physician, including 36 years inthe Roseburg area, he is nearing retire-ment. Until then, he works part time atDouglas Medical Clinic and continues hiscar restoration projects on the side.

I really enjoy working on cars, butsometimes it can get frustrating, he said.

Despite some difficult times during therestoration process and limited drivingtime, Owens has had a lot of good timeswith the Corvette, he said.

My favorite memory is driving downto California on I-5 in the summertime.

Owens and his 63 Corvette can be seen

in several Graffiti events this week. Heplans to participate in the Wednesdayafternoon kick off, the Saturday Show-N-Shine and the Saturday night cruise.

Although this year Owens is only show-ing his Corvette, in the 12 years he hasparticipated in Graffiti Weekend, he hasshown his 51 MG, 39 Ford coupe and

    drove his 15 Model T.

    REEN Avid Ducks fan Chase

Briggs, 6, of Myrtle Creek, has aneye for green. Like many boys hisage, he likes cars, too.

Lucky for him, hes in line to inherit a darkgreen, 1931 Model A Ford that his grandfa-ther Don Robertson, 65, restored earlier thisyear.

Hell say, Yeah, thats my car, donttouch, Chases grandmother, MargaretRobertson, said recently at her husbandsshop in Green.

The car is a family heirloom that nowbridges both sides of Chases family. Mem-bers of the Briggs and Robertson clans will

come together to celebrate that shared con-nection and enthusiasm for cars during thisweeks Graffiti Weekend events.

The classic car has been in Chases familysince his paternal great-great-grandfatherbought the car new.

In the new millennium, the car was all buteaten by the overgrown weeds in a familyfield until the boys maternal grandfather,Don Robertson, bought the rusted pile andrebuilt it piece by piece.

The Robertsons registered the title jointlyunder their names, with Chase and his moth-er, Alice Briggs, designated as the

next owners. The Robertsons believe Chase will be the

second Briggs to own the vehicle in working

condition. Its very seldom that you find acar thats got the second owner thatsthe grandson, Margaret Robertsonsaid.

Alice Briggs said she was excitedthat her family and her husbandsfamily could connect through thisshared piece of history that will passto her son.

It was a rusted pile outside myhusbands dads shop, she said.

Her father-in-law, Stephen Briggs, saw the car restored to its former

glory at the 34th Annual RoseburgBenefit Car Show in March.

Robertson said it was a proudmoment for him.

He was really excited, he couldnt

believe how it turned out. He said, It turnedout just beautiful, Robertson said.

Robertson has been working on cars all his

life. In his younger years, he liked hot rodsand sprint cars. Its a lot of fun. A lot of fun to play with,

Robertson said last week in his shop, whichdoubles as work space for the cars and hisbusiness, Dons Powder Coating.

The couple live above the shop, whichoffers him ample time to tinker on the cars often into morning hours, Margaret Robert-son said.

After a bout with colon cancer landed himin the emergency room without warning in1988, Don Robertson said the car work hasreplaced old habits that were harming his

health. This is my cigarettes and alcohol now, he

said, waving his arm toward the cars.

    CRAIG REED

    The News-Review

raffiti Weekend hasbeen a family affair forJack and Mary Zinksfamily for all 30 yearsof the Roseburg event.

Mary Zink, the treasurer for theUmpqua Flatheads Car Club 30

years ago, took one of the firstcalls from Richard Dickman, whoproposed the Graffiti cruise forRoseburg. It didnt take much forher to decide it was a good idea. Her husband and their three chil-dren were also quick to becomeenthusiastic about the event thathas grown into a five-day highlightfor central Douglas County.

I think Graffitis success ispartly because weve managed tokeep it inexpensive. Many of the

events are free, Mary Zink said.I also think a big part of it is thatthe community supports it. Its acommunity friendly event thatpeople can come to and have agood time.

Its been a good event, saidher son, John Zink. People reallyenjoy coming here for it, whetherpeople from out of the area orthose who live here. We get people fromCalifornia, Washington, Idaho, coming toit. And they keep coming back. They goback home, tell their friends and the next

year they come back with two or threemore people.

Mary Zink said she was surprised by theturnout for the first cruise that was held onRoseburgs Harvard Avenue. The turn-around areas were at the former Douglas

County Farmers Co-Op on the east end ofthe cruise and the parking lot at MarksShopping Center to the west.

That first cruise packed Harvard, saidJack Zink.

Helping the Zinks as cruise officialseach year have been their son, John, andhis wife, Frances, son Richard and hiswife, Tina, and daughter Beth and her hus-band, Ken Werner.

While being officials, the Zinks have

also taken turns participating in Graffitiactivities and driving their older cars in thecruise. They own 20 cars that range frommodels dated 1936 to 1966.

Their 1947 Ford sedan delivery van is

one of the few vehicles that has appearedin all previous 29 cruises. Itll roll againthis week along with a 1946 Mercury con-vertible and a 1953 Ford pickup. In lastyears cruise, Jack, Mary, John, Frances, grandson Nathaniel Zink and his threedaughters Cora, Lili and Emme allrode together in the Mercury for one triparound the route.

It was pretty cramped, John Zink said.Jack Zink, who lost his sight in an acci-

dent in 1975, isnt able to drive, andadmits that he feels as if hes missing partof the experience. But he said he alwaysenjoys the riding.

Thanks to his many years of working oncars prior to his eye accident, Jack hasbeen able to continue to do so by feelthrough the years. The oldest car in theZink collection is a 1936 Ford convertiblesedan, and the vehicle the couple has hadthe longest is a 1941 Ford pickup that theyacquired in 1958.

Fifteen years ago, Don Robertsontraded in high-speed cars for classicautomobiles. Six years ago he joinedRoseburgs Stray Angels Car Club andhas been enjoying the steady cruise eversince.

It was really something to start

doing these cars and getting involved inthe car club, he said.

Like Chase, the boys 14-year-old sis-ter, Britni Briggs, will inherit another ofRobertsons restored cars. Britnis car isa 1934 Chevy two-door standard thatRobertson finished restoring in 2003.

The striking vehicle sports a whitetop and a red-orange body with flamesstitched into the seat upholstery.

Robertson said his granddaughter ishis stalwart navigator during carparades.

She says she loves to throw thecandy, Robertson said.

During the Graffiti Weekend events,Robertson plans to surprise StephenBriggs with the keys to the car his owngrandfather drove new in the 1930s.

The green car will be with Chaseand his grandpa and Britni will be withme, he said. Its going to be some-thing that will make me real proud tosee em there with the cars.

Robertson says he plans to participatein several of the Graffiti Weekendevents, including the River Forks

Show-N-Shine and the downtownRoseburg cruise on Saturday.

TYLER OBRIENAs told to Tricia Jones

my family has always been into oldcars, and Ive always wanted one.(Ill be a junior at Roseburg High

School this fall.) And my dads a mechanic, so Ivealways been into helping him work on cars.

My grandparents, Bob and Doris Keeler, boughtsome property along Roberts Creek Road, and thepeople who owned it before that just left some vehi-

cles there. One of them was a 1954 Ford F-150.They thought about fixing it up, but it was going tocost too much money, so my grandpa told me andmy dad, Gene OBrien, that if we wanted the truck

we could have it. That was eight years ago.I was 8 years old then and I went to my dad and

said, Can we drive it through Graffiti Weekend? Can we?

It took us seven years to get it completely donethe way we wanted. It means a lot to me because ofhow much help we had putting the truck together, and how much fun I had working on the truck withmy dad. I would also like to say thanks to DonRobertson of Dons Powder Coating in Green.

Everything on it is original, including the engine. We never changed the engines, just did some workto it. All the gearing is three on the tree just like itused to be for that year. So its completely original.

The truck is in my and my dads name. Weregoing to share it until he gets his own old car done. Then it will be just mine.

It hasnt been driven much. Its not a trailerqueen, but it is more of a show rig than everyday(ride). Ill probably keep it forever. My grandpadied about four or five years ago, so its sentimentalto me in that way.

Im really proud of the accomplishment on thetruck, how well it turned out, and how much helpwe had throughout it also.

Tyler OBrien of Roseburg is 16. His 1954 FordF-150 will be returning to Graffiti Weekend for itsthird cruise.

Ive always had cars, said Jack Zink, who from 1975 to 1983 owned a Roseburgstore that featured vintage Ford parts.Theres just something about them.

Sometimes I end up needing help, butmost of the time I can do the work.

He works in his home shop about eight

hours a day.By working on cars, you can make

them part of your own, said John Zink, who works with his dad on the old cars. They kind of become a part of you.

    John Zink has a 1940 Ford two-door

sedan that he got when he was a junior inhigh school in 1970. He took it apart and isgradually getting it put back togetherdespite interruptions related to health, time, money and family.

Ill drive it in some Graffiti, he said. Its been put on the back burner a fewtimes.

John Zink described car ownership askind of the American dream.

Theres something about cars thatexcite people, he said.

The older cars continue to be a passionfor the Zink family. So does Graffiti Week-end.

wINSTON Theres no con-nection between the twoevents except timing and a

common love of vintage vehicles. Still, itwouldnt be too much of a stretch todescribe the Winston Summer Nite Cruiseas the younger sibling of Roseburgs Graf-fiti Weekend.

As in past years, the biggest differencebetween the Winston and the Roseburgcruise is a matter of well, rules.

Roseburgs Saturday night cruise is lim-ited to vehicles from 1972 or earlier. Bigtrucks, motorcycles and 4-by-4s are not

welcome.Winstons cruise, on the same night, is

open to all comers. There is an emphasison muscle cars, but dates and makes areirrelevant.

If people have a Hummer and theywant to bring that through, they can bringit, said Anna Falls of Green, secretary ofthe Winston-Dillard Area Festival Associa-tion. We dont put a restriction on it.

The laid-back attitude extends throughthe ranks to all the drivers, according toFalls.

These people work hard to spruce up

those cars, and when they come through, they dont worry about them gettingscratched up or damaged, she said. Buteven if Winston Summer Nite cruisersdont regard their rigs as museum pieces, they are proud of those babies, boy, Fallssaid.

Though the cruise will continue the tra-dition of getting everybody together forsummer socializing, a new element will beadded this year.

Organizers are presenting an Automo-tive Swap Meet on Friday and Saturday atWinston Foursquare Church, on the corner

of Main and Thompson streets. Cars andauto parts will be sold, adding another ele-ment of commerce to the cruise weekend.Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday andfrom 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The cruise nights budget doesnt allow

for live music, but Falls said people bringtheir own sound systems and favoritetunes. But usually, people are doing somuch socializing that half of them donthear the music anyway, she added.

People get together and say, Oh, Ihavent seen you in such a long time. Its

like a family reunion, just a happy time,Falls said.

What were trying to do is to get com-munities together and the different organi-zations in the Winston area, and to just

have a fun time and visit with people.

    For The News-Review

my first car was purchasedin 1959 while I was inhigh school. An older kid living just up the street

from my parents house in Albany had itparked in hisdriveway. It wasa beautiful red1947 Plymouthbusiness coupe. He had done a lotof work on it to

turn it into a typi-cal old schoolstreet rod of thattime.

Id alwaysadmired it andone day it had afor sale sign onit. We negotiateda price of $300and the red Ply-mouth moveddown the streetto our house. I

drove the car allthrough my sen-ior year of highschool and my freshman year of college.I foolishly traded it off on a really nice55 Mercury that I thought I just had tohave. I always regretted saying goodbyeto that little Plymouth.

About five years ago, Dick Thornley,a friend from our Stray Angels Car Clubinformed me there was a 47 Plymouthbusiness coupe for sale in Grants Pass. The business coupe is quite rare. It wasoriginally designed with no back seatand a huge trunk. Traveling salesmenbought them so they could haul theirsamples with them on the road.

I knew I had to have this car, so againI was the proud owner of a 47 Ply-

mouth. However, it cost me more than10 times what I paid for the first one and

it needed a lot of work. The restoration process took about

three years off and on. Friends and StrayAngels club members Don Larson andRoger Tyler did a lot of the basic workgetting the car in good running order. It

had a nice interi-or and a goodengine, butneeded wiringand a lot of sort-ing out. Theentire dash was

removed, all thechrome replated, gauges andspeedometer, etc., rebuilt. Thepaint and body-work was doneto perfection byanother friend inWinston, PaulPastor. The deepmaroon paintreally looksgreat in the sun.

    Copper metallicghost flameswere applied by

    Pino; they really brought everythingtogether.

The car is done in the 1950s-60s style, much as my first car. It has a period-cor-rect flat head six- cylinder motor withdual carbs, high compression head, splitmanifold with wicked sounding pipesand lots of chrome dress up. No modernconveniences such as air conditioning(just open a window!), power steering, etc.

Driving the car puts me in a timemachine. The feel, sounds and smells allremind me of those days over 50 yearsago when I was driving my first car.

Ah, life was good! Life is good!

We lived in Roseburg. In 92, we weretransferred to Seattle by Dicks company,CF Freightways. At that time it was still inparts, but was being cataloged and sorted. We lived in a travel trailer for two yearsuntil we purchased a home in Lynnwood, with a shop, so Dick was able to get some

more work done on the car.In 1994, I was in a very bad accident, and Dick was unable to do much on therod. Then in 2002, his company closed. We moved back to Roseburg, and lived ina fifth wheel for another three years. Finally, about six years ago, we bought ahome in Winston that has a shop. Dickdrives a semitruck for United Parcel Ser-vice.

At times, it had to sit for years in stor-age. Dick has done everything fromground up including the engine, refab andpaint, etc. The only thing he had done (by

a professional service) was the upholstery.

It took him 12 years to finish it, as he wasonly able to get to it off and on. Theprocess made me realize how much dedi-cation he has, and how talented he is.

He likes to tell the story about how onechilly evening right after its first time onthe road, I asked him to turn the heater on.He said that real hot rods do not haveheaters!

When we first got the pickup and were

hauling it, it was up on a trailer andlooked like a piece of junk. The first gasstation we came to, a man came runningup and said, Ill give you $1,500 for it.We had paid $400. My reaction was to sellit. But now I wouldnt let him sell it foranything. It couldnt go. One of ourgrandsons will inherit it one day.

Im really proud of Dick. Some people

have lots of money and fix up their cars,

and they are beautiful. But I think itsimportant for people who do the hardwork themselves to get recognized. Hedrives it, because what he wants to do isenjoy it. People ask, if you drive it around, dont you get rock chips in it? We do, buthe fixes it.

We have participated in Graffiti night(with the pickup) three times, as we will

    this year.

    The News-Review

LIDE Back in high school, BillRoberts had his eye on a 1940Oldsmobile Model 60 Coupe, which at the time was on display ina show room in Concord, Calif.

Although he wasnt able to purchase it

then, fate has a funny way of working andabout 40 years later, Roberts and his wifeof 42 years, Sandi Roberts came across thecar again.

Bill Roberts, 64, of Glide explained thatwhile in high school he knew of anOldsmobile dealer who collected the carsand put them on display in his show room.Occasionally, the dealers daughter evendrove one to school. In 2000, SandiRoberts, 63, of Glide was working with anindividual whose father bought the samecar and tore it apart to make it a hot rod. However, the man passed away. So, Sandi

Roberts sold her 1968Mustang to buy theOldsmobile.

Its the accumula-tion of a lot ofdreams, Sandi Robertssaid.

Ive been into carsfor a long time butcouldnt get deeplyinto them because ofthe kids, Bill Robertsadded.

When the couplepurchased the car for$7,500, there were onlyabout 70,000 miles onit, and it was in goodcondition with no rust,Bill Roberts said. Atthe time of purchase, the Oldsmobile waspainted baby blue with

matching upholstery. Now, the car is worth $25,000 and is

painted peaches and creme with anorange pearl overlay, pinstripe and ghostflames. Because of the light colors andpearl, the car shows really well in theafternoon sunlight, Sandi Roberts said. So, she decided to name it AfternoonDelight.

Going along with the outside colorscheme, the upholstery, which was doneby a friend, Dayton Kolb of Dillard, is

embroidered with flames and is outlinedwith a similar peach color, the Robertsexplained. Painted on the dash are theRoberts first names.

Its an eye catcher, Sandi Roberts said.Regardless, the Oldsmobile has placed in

every show it has entered, except for one. There are so many beautiful cars so we

never anticipate anything, she said.Apart from the cosmetic details, Bill

Roberts bolted the engine, finished piecingthe car back together and worked on thewiring. The Oldsmobile has a ZZ4 engineand 700 R-4 transmission. And, it getsgood gas mileage because it has overdrive,Bill Roberts said.

Its an expensive hobby, but I do a lotof the work myself, he said.

Roberts explained that while in highschool he hung around with a crowd whoall had hot rods. The 1948 Pontiac he isworking on now is going to be more like a60s hot rod, he said.

Other cars the Roberts own are a 1938Ford pickup, 1941 Chevy and 1949 Chevy, which Bill Roberts has had since highschool. He said he plans to pass it on to thecouples oldest daughter.

However, the Oldsmobile is technicallySandis since she sold her Mustang to pur-chase it, Bill Roberts added.

I dont know if this is my favorite

memory, but its a funny one, SandiRoberts explained.

Bill was going to show me how muchpower the car had, and I was wearing san-dals. He stomped on it and my feet flew upand my sandals flew off, Sandi recalled, laughing.

we purchased the 1940Packard 120 Coupe frommy brother, Richard, in

1998.We started work on the car in

2001. We bought a Fat Man subframe, and a 1968 Pontiac Trans Amdonor car for the engine, transmissionand rear end. These were all installed byour friend, Bob McCarroll.

The body was then removed andtaken to Eugene where it was dipped toremove the rust and paint. All newbrake lines, fuel lines, power brake sys-tems were installed and thechassis painted and finished. Bodywork, paint and upholstery were fin-ished in 2007.

Without the many hours of donatedtime and energy from Bob, Jim Shipleyand other friends, it would still be sit-ting unfinished. This is an ongoing proj-

ect that is still lacking a heater system, radio and sound system, cruise controland bucket seats with a seat beltsystem.

We have driven the Packard to localcar shows, the Wenatchee, Wash., AppleRun and the 40th annual Rod Run inWest Yellowstone, Mont. Our greatest

joy and surprise was when a pictureof our Packard, taken in West Yellow-stone, was in the CruZin Magazine inApril.

We have taken a lot of short, fun tripsaround Oregon. Our 3-year-old greatgrandson claims this as My car,Papa!

The Packard is our pride and joy andwill be as long as I can drive.

    CRAIG REEDThe News-Review

after years of sitting on the sidelines during theGraffiti Weekend Saturday night cruises, MaryLou Argo is ready to drive the streets herself.Shell be in the 1955 blue and silver Chevy Belair.Ive wanted one for a long, long time, said the Rose-

burg woman. When she was a 7-year-old in Roseburg, her father had a

55 Chevy. Her husband, Ray Argo, purchased a 55 Chevyfor $200 from Hansons Chevrolet in Roseburg in 1965when he was a teenager. Now Mary Lou Argo has her own55 Chevy that she said shell share with her husband.

Its brought back memories of those days, she said. When Argo, now 64, first started thinking about buying

an older car, her other choice was a 55 Thunderbird. Butthe couple concluded they needed a car with a back seat tocarry their grandchildren around, so they focused on find-ing a Chevy.

Argo also told the couples children and grandchildrenthat Grandma is spending your inheritance.

The Argos found some cars and made bids on two, butfailed to purchase either. Then about a year ago while using

the Internet, Ray Argo found a 55 Chevy in Cheyenne,Wyo., that was listed for sale. He used email to contact theowner, and a video and photos of the car were then sent toRoseburg.

Two Christmases ago, a car was at the top of my wishlist, Mary Lou Argo said. And then last year a trip toCheyenne was at the top of my list.

The Argos finally decided to get the car, but snowyweather postponed their trip east to Wyoming a couple oftimes. They finally left in mid-March. They pulled into agas station on the outskirts of Cheyenne and called thecars owner to let him know they had arrived. He said hedmeet them at the station in 20 minutes or so.

About that much time later, the Argos, while standing in

a parking area, saw the Belair coming in their direction. It was shiny, Mary Lou said. We both looked at each

other and said, Weve got to buy it. It was just beautiful.

The car was purchased for $22,000,

loaded on a trailer and the haul westwardbegan. All went well until the Argos got abit south of Bend en route to the DiamondLake Highway. Thats when another latesnowstorm hit.

There was no tarp for the Belair and therewas concern about rock chips from the grav-eled highway being flipped up at the car. There was also concern about just getting itover the Cascades and down the mountain. The Argos stopped to put chains on their rig.

Bend to Roseburg over the DiamondLake Highway took over six hours, MaryLou Argo said. It was a white-knuckle

ride. It was a pretty hairy trip. The weather made it a little dicey, thats for sure, Ray Argo said.

But the couple and their trailered careventually arrived in Roseburg.

Now after 29 years of watching theGraffiti cruises, Mary Lou Argo is ready todrive her Belair with its 350 cubic-inchengine in the 30th cruise.

I think shes pretty satisfied with thecar, her husband said. I know I love it.Knowing me, it could have a little morepower, but its got plenty.

The Argos plan to take their car to sever-al of the Graffiti events. First, however, they entered it in the June 25 Myrtle CreekShow-n-Shine and won first place in theModified 1940-1959 Class.

Shes spoiled, but Ill get a little timebehind the wheel, Ray Argo said with alaugh.

Its my car ... its our car, Mary LouArgo said. But I was the force behind get-
